T he need for rhe lnsrirntc for Peace and Justice was driven home within a week of the building opening chis fall. The horrific. arcacks on New York C icy and Washingcon, D.C., were terrible reminders that the world is a volatile and dangerous place. Perhaps wirhin the IPJ's walls, srudcncs, faculty, visi Ling scholars and inrcrnarional leaders can help prevcnc such rragedics, even as rhcy do the difnculr work of resolving con0ict, promoring human righ ts and engendering murnal respect among rhc world's diverse culrurt'.S. The Ccm er for Science and Technology will be the largcsr academic building on campus, horn<' ro more 1han 70 srarc-of-rhc-arr laborarory facilities, aquariums, an astronomy deck. a greenhouse and a vivarium. The center is dest ined co play a key role as San Diego conrinucs ro esrabli~h itselfas a focal poinc of biocechnology and wireless communications industries. For all these changes, USO is dedicated ro remaining at irs core the same campus Bishop Charles Francis Buddy and Mo1her Rosalie Hill envisioned more than five decades ago. We are dedicated to the development of rhc whole person - in rcllcccually, spirirually, culturally and physicall y. Recognizing rhc d igniry of each indiv idual and using rhe education gained here in service ro humanity will remain rhe cornerscone of a USO educarion. On behalf ofour srndcnts, faculty and scaff. thank you for you r interest in rhc University ofSan Diego.
