New University Rally Attracts 3000 to Park The proposed San Diego Univer- sity received the good wishes of 3000 San Diegans at a mass meeting at the Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park yesterday marking the start of door-to-door solicitation for the University Foundation Fund. I Hollywood Star Pat O'Brien called the University "a great and wonderful thing, one that deserves all the support we can give it." The Most Rev. Charles Francis Buddy, Bishop of the San Diego Catholic ~iocese, reminded the group that we have a great task before us, but if l't were easy it would be no good." O'BRIEN BRINGS LAUGHS O'Brien, the featured speaker on the two-hour program, drew laughs from the crowd when he remarked that all of his movies were banned In Russia. (In most of his late pic- tures he has played the part of a , priest) O'Brien pointed out the need for better educational facilities. "Cath- olic education is a wonderful thing," he said. "especially in these days when the whole world is topsy- Solemn Pontifical Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament was offered by Bishop Buddy at the conclusion of the meeting. In one of the most colorful rituals of the Catholic Church, the Bishop asked a blessing on the church's $6,000,000 humanitarian project. PRIESTS ASSIST The Bishop was assisted by Fa- ther Thomas Lehand, Pastor of St. Martin's Church in La Mesa; Fa- ther Malachy O'Sullivan, Pastor of St. Mary's Church in National City; Very Rev. Patrick Dunne, Pastor of St. Vincent"s Church in San Diego, and the Rev. John Pur- cell, Pastor of the Sacred Heart Church in Coronado. Among guests at the meeting were DeGraff Austin, Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors; Vincent T, Godfrey, City Council- man, representing Mayor Harley E. Knox, and Adm. William H. Stand- ley USN, ret., former Chief of Naval Operations. Donald B. Smith, Chairman of the Rally, was Master of Cere- monies. Parochial schools taking j part were the Academy of. Our Lady of Peace, Cathedral Girls' High School, Our Lady of the Sa- cred Heart School, St. Agnes' turvy."

The new building of Our Lady o) Guadalupe School, corner of Kear- ney Ave. and Sigsbee St., was ded- icated yesterday afternoon in spe- cial ceremonies at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 1770 Kearney Ave. Parents of the 250 pupils and Priests and Sisters of the First and Second Orders of St. Francis at- tended. The Sisters are teachers at lhe school. BUILDING BLESSED After a procession into the church, the Most Rev. Charles Francis Bud- dy, D.D., Bishop of San Diego Dio- ceEe, bleFsed the school. The Rev. Benjamin Silva, SJ, Church Pastor, and his assistants. the Rev. Gerald J. Fader and the Rev, Walter Want, also participated. In a ceremony at the school grounds, members of the Rudolph Martinez American Legion post hoisted the American and State flags, which had been blessed by Bishop Buddy. A reception for priests and sisters followed.
