USD COACHING STAFF

TONY DA LUZ, Head Coach Head Coach Tony da Luz begins his third season as head women's soccer coach at the University of San Diego. Since his hiring on Nov. 7, 1992, da Luz has been in charge of building the newest sport at USO from the ground up. Last season USO won seven of its last eight games to finish 8-8 overall and tied for third in the West Coast Conference. Among the Toreros' victo– ries was a 1-0 upset over No. 20 Washington to take third place

at the Umbro Invitational. Da Luz has been a familiar sight on the USO sidelines since his days as a player and assistant coach on the men's team. A former USO team MVP and wee honorable mention selection, da Luz broke into coaching as chief assistant coach to Seamus McFadden prior to the 1984 season. In his seven years on McFadden's staff, da Luz helped USO to five straight winning seasons. Tony and wife, Amy, have two sons, Austin and Tyler. They reside in Del Mar. Parker begins her third season with the Toreros. She played four years of collegiate soccer, beginning her career at UC Santa Barbara before finishing with UCSD, where she earned a de– gree in Visual Arts. An All-American (1991) at UCSD, Parker set a school record for assists in a game (5). She also shares the UCSB record for goals in a game (4). A San Diego native, Parker has two brothers who coach the USO rugby club team.

TRONG NGUYEN, Assistant Coach One of the finest players in Torero soccer history, Nguyen em– barks on his first season as assistant coach . A four-year letterman on defense, Nguyen earned All-America Second Team honors in 1990. Trong was a three-time AII-WCC pick who com– peted in the Collegiate Soccer Indoor Showcase and was drafted shortly thereafter by the MSL Wichita Wings. He is currently working towards a master's degree in College Counseling at USO.

At USD's team photo session last year, Coach Tony da Luz decided to break from school tradition. He asked a group of first-year players to pose for the team's yearbook cover, an honor generally reserved for seniors. Da Luz knew what he was doing that day as half of the freshmen (now sophomores) returned for this year's cover which features AII-WCC selections from a year ago. The youth movement is underway at USD, yet da Luz isn't so much rebuilding as he is stockpiling. Last year underclassmen figured in 94% of the team's scor– ing. San Diego also returns its top five scorers from a year ago when the club finished third in wee scoring (2 .81 goals per game). AII-WCC first teamer Michele Kennedy led USD in points with 12 goals and seven assists and moves from the forward position to midfield this season . There she will be joined by sophomore Monica Costello, who came on strong in the second half of 1993, collecting a school-record seven points in one game while tallying goals in six straight contests. Junior Annmarie Snorksy brings consider- able experience at midfield, having spent a full season with the Toreros and one year at Portland. San Diego's defense looks particularly strong, despite the loss of AII-WCC performer Karmyn Clark. Sophomore Michelle Bush will continue to be the leader on defense. Da Luz has also solidified the defense by moving veteran forward Kristen Campbell and midfielder Dawn Birdsall to the back. Redshirt freshman Amanda Stack and newcomer Joy lwanaga are expected to see time on defense as well. Sophomore goalkeeper Allison Worden hopes to continue the form that saw her compile six shutouts and a miniscule 0.62 goals-against average in 1993. THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO

Academics

Setting The University of San Diego is an inde– pendent Catholic institution of higher educa– tion. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 1O minutes from downtown San Diego. The Campus The USO campus is one of the most ar– chitecturally unique institutions found in the country,featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Re– naissance style. In the last decade USO has completed eight major construction and expansion projects. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility double the size of the former law library that offers the latest in information technology. Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tu– toring, senior citizen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. Over two-thirds of the USO community partakes in intramural sports. Student Life

USO enrolls more than 6,200 students who have a choice of more than 50 under– graduate and graduate degree programs. The University includes the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Ad– ministration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 10- 30 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18:1. Over 96 percent of USD's full– time faculty hold doctorates. Athletics San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. Men's sports include: baseball, basketball, crew, cross country, golf, football, soccer and ten– nis. Women's sports include: basketball,crew, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, ten– nis and volleyball. In the past two seasons alone, four USO teams have advanced to NCAA Tournaments. Last year, USD's grid– iron squad became a charter member of the 1-AA Pioneer Football League. ®
