1999-2000 Sea.,o.n .7n :Reuiew-... eont'd March 17, 2000, NCAA 1st Round The Uni versity of Sa n Diego women' s basketball team ea rned its second trip to the NCAA Tournament in schoo l hi s– tory. On March 17, 2000 (St. Patri ck 's Day) th e Toreros trave led to South Bend , Indi ana to take on the Uni versity of Notre Dame Fi ghting Irish in the first round of th e 2000 NCAA Tourn ament. The # 15 seed USO Toreros ( 17-1 2) batt led the #2 seed Notre Dame Irish (25-4) in front of 5, 195 fa ns at the Joyce Center. The outcome favo red the Iri sh on St. Patri ck's Day, as Notre Dame defeated San Di ego 87-6 1. The Toreros were led by th e ir three seni ors, Su sie Erpelding, Mari a Perez-Barris and Jess ica Gray. Erpelding scored a game-hi gh 19 po ints, Perez-Barri s recorded 16 po ints and Gray added 8 points in the fin a l game of their USO careers. No tre Dame fini shed 27-5 on th e year after advanc ing to the third roun d of the NCAA Tournament, eventua lly los ing to Texas Tec h in thi rd roun d act ion. USD's magica l season came to an end, as the To reros finished the year with a 17- 13 overal l record. Sen iors Susie Erpe ld ing and Jessica Gray provided the The senior ta ndem comb ined for 31.3 po ints per game, earned West Coast Conference First Team honors and were selected to the West Coast Conference All-Tournament Team. Erpelding, USD's al l-time scoring leader, tallied 1,510 po ints in her four-year career. She was a three-time all-confer– ence first team se lection, a two-time all-academic se lection, a two-time Stength and Conditioning All -American and a two-t ime GTE Academic All -Ameri can. She was most recently named the WCC Scholar Athlete of the Year in her senior season. Gray was se lected the 2000 West Coast Conference Tou rn ament MV P, A II-WCC First Team and WCC Player of the Month (Januaiy) in her senior season. She also climbe_d the USO all-time rebound ing charts, fi nish ing at #2 w ith 700 boards in her four-year career. Gray set a new USO record for rebo unds in a season, grabbi ng 28 1 boards in her seni or campaign. The recent USO grad uates are current ly playing profes– sional basketba ll overseas. Keeping The Momentum The Un iversity of San Diego women 's basketba ll pro– gram experienced an inc redi ble season in 1999-00, but the Toreros are not satisfied dwe lling on last year's accomplishments. The 2000-0 I squad is hungry for more success. This year's team is aiming for 20 wins, a regu lar season West Coast Conference Champion ship, defending its 2000 Tournament Title, and win– ning in the NCAA Tournament.
