1999-20 0 0 Sea✓., o.n .:J n :Revieu,. wee Tournament Champions & NCAA Tournament Appearance! Toreros Match 17- win Season, Best in USD History. The 1999-2000 University of San Diego women ' s bas– ketball team experienced one of the program 's best seasons in USD hi story. The Toreros finish ed the season with a 17-1 3 overall record, matching the USD record for most wins in a season. The last time the Toreros achieved 17 victories in a year was during the 1989-90 season. Other accomp lishments achieved in the 1999- 00 season were winning the WCC Tournament Championship, appearing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, naming two players to the A ll -West Coast Conference Team, three play– ers to the All -WCC Tournament Team and three players to the WCC A ll-Academic Team . All-West Coast Conference First Team se lections in clude 1999-00 seniors Jessica Gray and Susie Erpe lding. Erpe lding and Gray were also se lected to the WCC All-Tournament team along with point guard Melissa Glazebrook. Gray was selected the Most Valuab le Player of the WCC Tour– nament. G lazebrook was in the zone during the West Coast Conference Tournament, averaging 9.3 points per game and _3 assi sts per game. Earning West Coast Conference A ll -Academic honors were Erpe ld ing, Glazebrook and Jamie Luci a. Erpe ldmg tallied a 3.92 grade point average as a graduate student 111 Coun– se li ng. G lazebrook, an Electrical Engineering major, accumu– lated a 3.56 GPA and Jamie Lucia earned an impress ive 3.76 GPA in Chem istry. West Coast Conference Tournament The USD women's basketba ll team won the 2000 West Coast Conference Tournament in Santa C lara, CA. The tourna– ment was he ld March 3-5 at Santa C lara's Toso Pavillion. The San Diego Toreros were a #4 seed in the WCC Tournament; the Toreros defeated #5 seed Loyola Marymount in the first round , upset #3 seed Santa C lara in the second round and upset # I seed Pepperd ine in the champi onship game . USD faced Loyo la Marymount 111 the first round of the WCC Tournament. The Toreros defeated the Lions 65-62 in front of 345 fans at Toso Pavilli on. Four Toreros scored in double-fig– ures; senior Jessica Gray led the way with 16 points and 7 rebounds, senior Susie Erpe lding added 15 po ints and se111or Mana Perez- 1999-2000 IN REVIEW

Barris contributed I4 points and 9 rebounds. Sophomore point– guard Melissa G lazebrook recorded a career-high 12 pomts. In round two, San Diego took on the tournament host Santa Clara Bron– cos in front of 1,573 fans at Santa C lara's Toso Pavill ion. The Toreros upset the #3 seeded Broncos, 6 1-56. Senior Erpe lding scored a game-high 22 po ints for the Toreros. Fellow se111or, Gray added 16 points and 7 rebounds. _ _ San Diego faced th e # I seeded Pepperd111e Waves 111 the championship game. The Toreros earned the 68-5 1 victory by shoot– ing 50 percent from the field (25-of-50), 40 percent from 3-pomt range (4-of- I0) and 73. 7 percent from the free-throw l111e ( l4-of- 19). The game was tied at 45 with 9 minutes left in the game. San Diego put together a 15-2 run to gain control of the game, lead111g 60-47 at the 2:30 mark. The Toreros held the Waves to only 3 field goals in the final 9 minutes of play. Four Toreros scored double– figures: sen ior Jess ica Gray recorded her 11th double-double (_15 points, 12 rebounds) , se nior Susie Erpe lding ( 12_ points), senior Maria Perez-Barris ( 12 points) and freshman Kern Nakamoto ( 11 points) . Head Coac h Kathy Marpe was pleased wi th her team's performance in the championship game, "We exec uted fl awless ly and played great defense. That kind of play comes from hours and hours of practice and drills. This team, especially our sen iors, played with a lot of heart. " With an automatic NCAA Tournament bid already earned with the WCC Tournament Championship, the USD women 's basketball team gathered on campus to watch the NCAA se lec– tion show in the Mi ssion Crossroads lounge. The en tire team was thrilled when they saw their name appear on the big sc reen tel e– vision. Kathy Marpe and her # 15 seed Toreros learned that they would travel to South Bend, Indi ana to meet the #2 seed Fighting Irish of Notre Dame... on St. Patrick's Day. " I think we can match up with Notre Dame, th ey' re more like us compared to the top four seeded teams in the tournament," said Coac h Marpe after learning of the NCAA first round match-up. USD NCAA History Last season marked USD 's second trip to the NCAA Tournament in program hi story. The Toreros first trip to the " Big Dance" was in 1993 . USD trave led to Linco ln, NE and lost to th e University of Nebraska Cornhuskers, 58-81 in first round action. That season ( 1992-93) the Tore ros were 16- 12 overa ll and 8-6 in the West Coast Conference. San Diego also wo n the West Coast Confe rence Tournament Championshi p in the 1992- 93 season.
