USD Softball 2009
Melissa McElvain enters her eighth year as USD's Head Softball Coach . In her first seven seasons as head coach, 24 athletes have earned PCSC All-Conference honors, including the 2004 (Rebekah Bradford) and 2007 (Jennifer Ellenbeck) PCSC Freshman of the Year and the 2006 PCSC Scholar Athlete of the Year (Sara Mason). Un– der McElvain's guidance, 44 student– athletes have earned All-Academic honors, including 27 student-athletes awarded PCSC Commissioner's Honor Roll honors, one PCSC Scholar Athlete of the Year, and a National Academic All-American 3rd Team (Sara Mason). Since the 2005-06 season, McElvain and the team have upheld a 100% NCAA academic progress rating. In 2008... The Toreros had a number of high– lights in 2008. Including a 6-4 victory over No. 17 ranked San Diego State on March 7 at the Diamond Devil Classic in Arizona . Nine opponents USD faced last season advanced to regional's. The Toreros set a number of team overall marks including a new high of 22 homeruns and overall hits with 376 to name a couple. In 2007... Coach "Mac" has made huge strides as she guided the Toreros to a record setting 2007 season. The graduating class in 2007 (Virginia Fritsch, Christina Haake, Alicia Massei, Danielle Treiber) tied or set new records in 12 different single season or career categories. As a team, San Diego accomplished 20 division one wins. They also recorded 24 overall wins, the most since the 2000 season . Coach McElvain also hit the century mark with her 100th career
What is the most memorable moment in your softball career? Playing in the Women's College World Series. It was a softball dream come true! I'd love to experience that as a coach. Where is your favorite place to vacation? Anywhere warm with a beach! What is your philosophy on life? Live, Love, Laugh' What hobbies do you have? Golf is a new hobby I love. It's fun, challenging and competitive. What's on your iPod? My country and hip hop, Ryan's classic rock, and Mia and Kamryn'schildren's music!:) What is your favorite movie? Bull Durham. What is your favorite holiday to celebrate? Christmas- Family, church, great food, lights, music and decorations. It was also very entertaining watching Mia and Kamryn open their gifts, and they were shocked when Santa showed up at our house on Christmas Eve. - 8th season as Skipper of USO Softball - BS in Business Administration (Oklahoma St. '99) - MS in Leadership Studies (Univ.of San Diego '06) - All Big XII Honors as catcher and second base - All Big XII Academic Honors - Led Oklahoma St. to 3rd place finish in Women'sCollege World Series
victory as head coach at USD on April 16th in an extra-inning victory over Santa Clara. In 2006... The 2006 season was more proof that the USD softball program is turning the corner and transforming the team into a competitive Division I program that could battle for that sought after bid to post season thanks to the efforts of Coach McElvain. In 2006, San Diego captured 22 wins for the first time since 2001. That year, USD also accomplished 18 division one wins. The Toreros also posted ten conference wins, the most in McElvain's history as the skipper for San Diego. Playing Days... A 1999 graduate of Oklahoma State, McElvain (formerlyTurley) earned All– Big XII honors while playing catcher and second base, as well as confer– ence honors. She ranks in the Top 20 all-time at OSU in several categories,
