SETTING The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as well. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid -Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcala, whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. Both institutions are located on a hill overlooking a river valley. THE CAMPUS

The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institu- tions in the country, featuring major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USD has completed numerous major construction and expansion projects. Last year the Jenny

Craig Pavilion , a 5 , I00-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to USD volleyball and basketball. This fall the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice will open on the west end of campus, and a new Science and Technology Center is underway. A five-story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage (I, I00 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lrnrnaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45.000 square foot Lorna Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories. ACADEMICS

USD enrolls more than 6,800 students (3,900 undergraduate) who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and universities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USD moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top I00 schools in the nation. STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, con- certs, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. The intramural program is also

an integral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the USD community partaking in the activities. ATHLETICS USD is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. The football team completed its eighth season in the Pioneer Football League . Women's sports include: basketball, cross country, rowing, soccer. softball, swimming & diving, tennis and vol– leyball. Men's sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, rowing, soccer and tennis. Since 1990 USD teams have won eleven conference championships; made 28 NCAA post-season appearances; had twenty-seven Conference Coaches of the Year; twenty-two Conference Players of the Year; twelve Conference Freshmen of the Year; four WCC Scholar Athletes of the Year; and thirty-one All-America selections. For the second straight year, USD hosted the West Coast Conference Basketball Cham– pionships .

What Is A Torero?

The University of San Diego, which sponsors sixteen NCAA Division I intercollegiate teams, competes under the athletic nickname ofToreros. In 1961 , the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the fo unding father of USO, announced that the school 's nickname wou ld change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with the friendly relationship which exists between San Di ego and Mexico," Hi s Excellency said at the time. Torero comes from the span ish term taro, the bull, and from the word torear, to fight bulls. All of the contestants in the ring are call ed toreros. Torero is a general term describing a bullfighter and signifies courage, honor and fide lity. USO student-athletes, like the Torero, represent a willing– ness to stand alone in the ring and accept the challenge. The 2000-200 I schoo l year marked the 40th anniversary with Toreros as the official nickname for USO athletic teams.

A 'NEW ERA' BEGINS WITH 2002 TORERO SOFTBALL

A new era begins thi s season with the Un iversity of San Diego women 's softball program. First year coach Melissa McElvain is onboard to lead the Torero softball for– tunes in 2002. A 1999 graduate of Okl ahoma State, she earned All-Big XII honors whil e playing catcher and second base. McEl vain (Turley) led the Cowgirls to three post– season appearances and a third place fini sh in the 1998 Women's College World Seri es. While at Oklahoma State , she earned All -Big XII academi c honors while attaining a Business Admini stration degree with an emphasis in Marketing. Along with her vast playing experi ence, she hopes to bring a new enthusiasm and winning attitude to the 2002 Torero ball club. McEl vain takes over a program that returns 14 letterwinners and 5 starters from last year 's 22-35 club. Although she will be without the services of four graduated seniors, including key performers Jade Quentin and Cri stina Byrne, the cupboard was not left bare . McElvain will look to a trio of returners for both leadership and experience - seni or infielder Nicky Geis (Chul a Vi sta, r■iiiiiiiiiiii;::;::=====~~~- CA); junior Lora McBay (. 286 batting aver-

age, 19 RBI), a versatile athl ete who can play a vari ety of pos itions; and sophomore pitcher/infi elder Jennifer Delpit (.236 batting average, 20 RBI , 5-8 pitching record). Ge is, tabbed thi s season's team captain , has been voted the team's Best Defensive Pl ayer the past three years, and wi ll start at shortstop. The squad will also be bo lstered by the return of fi ve other players that started a majority of the 2001 season - seni or infielder (second base) Kristy Clarke, 48 starts in 50 games; juni or infielder (first base) Desi Collo, .208 batting average with 39 starts; seni or outfi elder Stephanie Bisera, .207 batting average; sophomore catcher/outfie lder Olaya Salazar, .254 batting average with 2 1 starts in 28 contests; and sophomore in– fie lder Ashley Miller, 20 starts in 29 games . Clarke, a 200 I WISL AII-Tournament se lec– ti on, will once again start at second base, and along with Ge is, will give the Toreros a strong defense up the middle. Bi sera will start in centerfie ld and most likely will be the team's leadoff hitter. Miller is expected to start at third base thi s season fo r the Toreros. USD 's pitching hopes will be put on the shoulders of a trio of sophomores - Allison Williams, Anna Russell and Jennifer Delpit. Last season Willi ams pitched lOl.2 innings , striking out 41 and fini shing with a record of 5-9. Russell tallied 98. 0 innings of work in the circle and came away with a 6-9 record and 2.70 ERA. Delpit pitched in 23 contests with 10 starts and 3 complete games. She fini shed with a record of 5-8 and a 3.28 ERA .

Coach McElvain is excited about her fres hman class that in- cludes fi ve newcomers. Joining the Toreros for the 2002 season are Francesca Ramos (San Diego, CA; Po int Loma HS), Taryn Nagata (Honolulu , HI; Iolani School), Hilary McHugh (Vista, CA; Vista HS), Kim Delpit (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA ; R. Palos Verdes HS) and Ashley Turner (San Diego, CA; Heli x HS)

Coach McElvain is exc ited about the 2002 schedul e whi ch includes thir– teen home doubl eheaders. Hi ghli ghting the home slate wi ll be Long Beach State (March 20 th ), UC Santa Barbara (March 27 th ) , San Diego State (April 17 th ) and Loyola Marymount (April 26 th ). The Toreros will be tested on the road with tough competiti on at Cal State Fullerton (J anuary 29 th ), as well as three solid tournaments - Southern Utah Tournament (Feb. 2-3), Cal State Northridge Tournament (Feb. 8-10), and the San Diego State Tournament (March 15-1 6). The end of the year Western Interco ll eg iate Softball Tournament will beg in at Loyola Marymount University (April 30 th ) , and conclude at Saint Mary ' s Col lege (May 10-12). The Toreros begin the 2002 campaign on Saturday, Jan. 26 th with a

home doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino ( 12 noon).

MELISSA McELVAIN, Head Coach

1st Season

Melissa McElvain enters her first year as USD 's Head Softball Coach. A 1999 graduate of Oklahoma State, she earned All-Big Xll honors whi le playing catcher and second base . McElva in (Turley) led the Cowgirls to three post-season appearances and a th ird place fini sh in the 1998 Women 's College World Series. Wh ile at Oklahoma State, she earned All -Big Xll academic honors while attaining a Busi– ness Administration degree with an emphasis in Marketing. Additionally, she earned the OSU Community Service Contribution Award (1997-98) ; the NCAA Leadership Award ( 1998) ; and was a four-year SAAC Representative, including being the SAAC President her senior campaign. McElva in gained international experi ence while playing for the California Hurricanes in 1996 . She trav–

elled to Vancouver, Canada to compete versus Olympic teams such as Canada, Cuba , Italy and China. No stranger to USO, the past year-and-a-half she was employed by the USO athletic department as Assistant Sports Information Director. A native San Diegan, McElvain attended nearby Patrick Henry High School. Re– cently married on June 30, 2001 , Melissa and Ryan reside in San Diego.

CHRIS De MARCO, Assistant Coach 1st Season Chri s enters his first season on the Torero staff as an assistant. He has been actively involved in the San Diego community in many ways with a major emphas is on coaching. The past ten years he has been involved with coaching girls competiti ve softba ll. He has managed and coached hundreds of girls at every level, wi th many realizing All-Star status, both at Regional and National levels. His experience included ex tensive Trave l team play and tournament play. Accompli shed in the fi ner needs of Pitchers, he has also maintained an overall view of team managemen t, and offens ive and defensive strategies. An athlete and sports fanatic, hi s hobbies include vintage cars and motorcycles. A San Carl os resident, Chri s has two daughters that are both active in sports and academics. A 1984 graduate of Southern Illinois University (Marketing & Management), Chris relocated to San Diego in 1985 from Chicago. Co-owner of a Property management company that has been providing housi ng needs since 1972, he is committed to continuing to service the San Diego housing needs.

KELLYWARNER, Assistant Coach 1st Season Kelly begins her first year on the Torero staff where she will work closely with the pitchers. A 200 I graduate of Utah State Univers ity, Kell y earned her degree in Physical Education and Hea lth. Whi le at Utah State, Kelly was nominated as Student Teacher of the Year. She played softball for four years and led the Big West Confe rence in pitching for game appearances and games finished during her sen ior year. During her freshman year she led all frosh in games played. Prior to attending Utah State, Kelly made a name for herself in the spo1i of softball right here in San Diego. She prepped at Mt. Carmel High School where she was named All -CIF First Team, All -Divis ion I First Team, and Palomar Pl ayer-of-the-Year. In the classroom she was a four-time member of the Academic Honor Roll.

2001: Started 48 of 50 games last season finishing with a .224 batting average .. . was selected to the 200 I WISL All-Tournament team, as well as being honored on the WISLAll-Academic Team ... tallied four mu It-hit games, including a 3-for-3 outing against Santa Clara at the WISL Tournament ... scored two runs in three different games (Bradley, Concordia and LMU).

2000: Posted the third best batting average for USO, hitting an impressive .316 on the year. Recorded six multi-hit games and led the Toreros with 11 sacrifice hits. Kristy was 4-of-5 in stolen bases and tallied a .9 I2 fielding percentage in the infield. Clarke led the Toreros versus Cal State Dominguez Hills, batting 3-for- 4 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored. Clarke was selected to the All-WI SL academic team in her sophomore season. 1999: Named Al l-WISL and USO Rookie of the Year in her freshman campaign . She batted .284 while playing in 46 games. Boasted a fielding percentage of .923 at second and third base. Also received All– WISL academic honors. Prep: Attended and played at Woodbridge HS in Irvine, California where she lettered in both softball

and soccer. Earned Al l-Sea View Conference honors while batting .305 in her senior year. In her junior - .........:::: year, she helped lead her team to a CIF Championship while batting .297 and being selected All– League. As a sophomore, her team finished as the CIF nmner-up. In her freshman season, she was also a member of the CIF Championship team. Clarke also played on the USA Athletics club team. Personal: Born on March 3, 1980 in Pasadena, California. 2001: Sta1ied 33 of 44 games she appeared in. Batted .207 with 11 runs scored and 8 RBI. Was a perfect 3-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI in a 6-2 road win at Santa Clara ... WISL All-Academic pick. 2000: Appeared in 52 games and batted .250 for USO. She recorded 20 hits, 9 runs, 7 RBI and I double in the 2000 season. Bisera was a perfect 6-of-6 in stolen bases for the Toreros. She had stellar outings versus CS San Bernardino (2 -for-2, 2 runs, I RBI), Concordia (2-for-2, I run) and UC San Diego (2-for-3 , I RBI) . Tallied a .949 fielding percentage in the outfield. Bisera was also honored as an All-WI SL academic selection.

1999: Earned Coaches Award. Batted .30 I in her freshman season while playing in 48 games. Offensively had one doubl e, 9 RBI , 29 runs and was 5-of-6 stealing. Defensively, Bisera was solid in the outfield with a .93 1 fie ldi ng percentage. She led the Toreros vs. Western New Mexico last year goi ng 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBI and I run scored . Prep: Played at Laguna Hills Hi gh School in Mission Viej o, Californi a where she helped lead her team to the Pacific Coast League Championship. As a senior, Bisera was the recip ient of the Varsity Spirit Award. In her junior campaign she was named First Team All-League and the team 's Defensive MVP. Sophomore year, Stephanie earned the Varsity Coaches Award and was se lected First team All-League. Bisera was a two-time Scholar-Athlete. Personal: Born May 3, 1980 in Torrance, California. Chose USO for its academic reputation and sma ll campus size.

Parents are Guy and Paula Bisera of Mi ssion Viejo, CA. Bisera was also recru ited by Yale University. She is majoring in Biology and is a Education minor.

2001: Batted .333 while appearing in 7 games for USO. She also appeared in 7 contests as a pitcher, finishing with a record of 1-0 in I 1.1 innings ofwork. 2000: Batted .333 while appearing in 18 games for USD. She recorded five hits, two runs and two RBI. Wells led the Toreros versus Point Loma Nazarene, batting 2-for-3 with I RBI. She also recorded a 1-2 win-loss record from the mound. Wells struck out IO batters in 22 innings. She was selected to the All-WJSL academic team in her sophomore campaign. 1999: Joined USO as a fre shman and immediately the coaches began to see athleticism, pitching abi lity, good hitting mechanics and unlimited potential. Liz played in 6 games and batted .250. Liz also saw some time on the mound for the Toreros, appearing in two games. Prep: Attended Jesuit HS where she lettered in softball for four years. She was a three-time Honorable Mention All-Metro League selection and team captain in her sen ior year. In her juni or season Liz helped lead

her team to their first ever playoff appearance and placed 5th in State. Wells also played travel softball in the 16 & 18 under Go ld National Tournaments. She also lettered in vo lleyball (3 years), basketball and track (shot put). In volleyball , Liz was a First Team All-Metro selection and received Best Offensive Player Award in her senior year. Personal: Born September I, 1980 in Portland, Oregon. Her parents are Mike and Gloria Wells of Sherwood, Oregon. Liz chose USD because of its beautiful campus, emphasis on academics and because San Diego is a great city to live in. Liz is a History major and Chemi stry minor at USO.
