Previewing the 1998 Season
1
This year marks the fifth season that Head Coach Lin Adams has been at the helm of the USO women's softball program. This year could also be one of the most challenging seasons for Coach Adams in her career. After losing six players from last year' s team and five starters, Adams has brought in eight newcomers to fill some of the gaps and also add depth to this year's team. "We have a talented group coming in," said Coach Adams. Despite our youth– fulness, we aren't looking at thi s year as one of rebuilding because of the talent level of the incomers. I see us being very strong and I expect some of these fresh– men to move into the starting lineup ." The Toreros '98 roster consists of on ly two seniors , but they are the heart and soul of the squad. Senior pitcher Colleen Norman (Sonoma, Ca.) won 13 games for the Toreros last year and led the pitching staff with a 2.68 ERA. Norman started 30 games with 21 complete games in '98 and also recorded four shutouts. Out– fielder Jeanne Beauchamp (Sun Valley, Ca.) is the team' s other senior and brings 153 career starts into the USO lineup. Beauchamp has started in every game she has played and has only missed seven games in her three-year career. Beauchamp batted .264 during her junior campaign along with recording 38 hits with 16 RBIs. Two other full-time starters and two part-time starters from last year's team return to the '98 starting lineup. Sophomores Shaunna Collo (Encinitas, Ca.) and Kylee Hobb (Spring Valley, Ca.) saw siginificant action last season; Collo was the starting catcher for 57 games and Hobb started at first and in the outfield. Col lo is the leading returning hitter for the Toreros, batting .38 1 last season wi th 31 RBIs. Collo also led the team in stolen bases ( 13 swipes in 15 attempts) and runs scored
Colleen Norman led the team in wins and ERA in '97.
with 42. Hobb played in 57 games with 53 starts and ranked third on the team in batti ng with a .305 average. Hobb also knocked in 23 runs and had six doub les to rank second on the team. Two players starting in half of USD's games last year were sophomore shortstop Vanessa Leyvas (El Centro, Ca.) and sopho– more third basemen Lindsay Little (Oceanside, Ca.). Leyvas started in 34 games at shortstop while Little started in 36 games. Both players hit their first career home runs last season. Other returners include juniors Kit Barmann (Indianapolis, In. ) and Claire Patin (Santa Ynez, Ca.), and sophomore Michelle Morin (San Carlos, Ca.). Injuries limited playing time for Barmann last year as she was used mostly as a defensive substitution and Morin was the backup catcher. Patin took 1997 off, but played 30
games in her freshman season. The eight newcomers are all freshman except one in sophomore Katy Carnes (Colorado Springs, Co.). Carnes played for Regi s University (NCAA Div. II) last year and batted .350. The incoming freshmen consists of three local products from the San Diego area, three other California products and a Washington native. Trisha Tucker (La Mesa, Ca.) was a Second Team All CIF member during her senior year and will play third this season for the Toreros . Jade Quentin (Chula Vista, Ca.) was an All CIF selection and also named to the Union Tribune's All Academic Team. Quentin will be the #2 pitcher in the Toreros rotation. Erin Fleming (Encinitas, Ca.) was an Academic Athlete honoree at La Costa Canyon High during her senior year and will spend time at second and in the outfield. Catcher Donna Maggetti (Laguna Hills, Ca.), outfielder Brandi Sails (Vallejo, Ca.), and pitcher Wendi Whitmore (Tacoma, Wa.) were All League selections during their senior years. Rounding out the newcomers is outfielder Delayne Allison (San Jose, Ca.) who was the Best Of– fensive Player at Presentation High last year. The Toreros 1998 schedule consists of four tournaments and 22 other double– headers. USO will host the First Annual Torero Classic the weekend of March 6 and 7 with Point Loma, Western New Mexico and Loyola Marymount coming to town. The Toreros will also compete in the Redlands Tournament (Mar. 20-21 ), the UCSD Tournament (April 9-11) and the conference tournament, the Western Intercollegiate Softball League Championships (May 1-3) at St. Mary's College.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT
"Student-athletes face unique challenges and time demands. Our academic support center has been designed to be proactive in helping them achieve their goals and main– tain a high standard of academic achievement. Whether it be advis– ing, tutoring, orjust a quiet place to study, I encourage them to take ad– vantage ofall the resources that are available. I promote an interactive approach to learning and the estab– lishment ofa strong foundation early in their academic career. I believe that developingpositiveattitudes,hab– its, and behaviors duringcollegewill contribute to lifelong success both on and offthe field." Sara Hickmann
Sara Hickmann is in her first year as Coordinator of Athletic Academic Sup– port at the University of San Diego. The USO Athletic Academic Support Program is designed to assist and moti– vate student-athletes in their journey and progress towards their academic goals, and ultimately graduation. The primary objective is to improve the student-ath– letes' study skills, support them in their academic work, and encourage scholas– tic achievement. It is essential that stu– dent-athletes receive the necessary aca– demic assistance to continue normal progress toward a degree while partici– pating in athletics.
USO student-athletes receive assistance through advising, progress re– ports, academic tutors, campus learning centers, such as the Logic, Math, and Writing Centers, and the Accelerated Study Program. The Accelerated Study Program provides a monitored, quiet area open only to the student– athletes to ensure quality study time. These services are available to all USO student-athletes. STRENGTH& CONDITIONING The USO strength and conditioning program is under the direc tion of Steve Brown who is in hi s third year. It has been des igned to develop functional strength, speed, power and endurance. The development of these physical attributes is use less to the athletes unl ess it can be carried onto the playing field. Therefore, adheri ng to a properly designed program of strength training, conditioning and nutrition can enable our men and women to become the best possible athletes they can be, while simultaneously reducing the incidence of injury.
"I look forward to training all USD student-athletes and hope to establish a new sense of pride and commitment to the strengthand con– ditioning program. The area of strength and conditioning has be– come increasingly more scientific in recent years. I plan to utilize the latest research in this field to fully cultivate theathletic potential ofour athletes." Steve Brown
USO student-athletes receive intensive instruction on proper weight training technique; speed, power and agi lity develop– ment; and sport-specific conditioning. Their strength and conditioning programs are specific to the nature of their sport or position. Each athlete is individually monitored through– out their program to ensure the greatest chance of athletic progress.
Both coaches and student-athletes had very positive re– views from the first two seasons.
Steve was recently named as the 1998 National Strength and Conditioning Association Professional of the Year for the West Coast Conference.

Setting The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcal a Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as well. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish vi ll age near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the vi ll age centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcala, whose bui ldings became the inspiration for USD's style. Both institutions are located on a hill overlooking a river val ley. The Campus The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institu– tions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance sty le. The physical beauty of the campus reaches
beyond the "eye of the beholder." Reverend Mother Rosalie Hill, one of the institutions founders, believed in the enhancement of learning through beauty and harmony. Hence for the University, beauty is a transcendental quality imparted to students as part of their education to truth and goodness: a simple but profound educational philosophy. Since 1984, USO has completed nine major construction and expansion projects. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma
Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and labratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technology. Academics USO enrolls more than 6,600 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergradu– ate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and universities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The univer– sity is ranked among the top 100 schools in the nation. Student Life Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Students participate in a wide range
}
of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen out– reach, and house building in Tijuana. The intramural program is also an in– tegral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the USO community partaking in intramural sports.
