TOREROS DEFINED

~ ~

I

< The University ofSan Diego, which sponsors sixteen NCAA Division I t intercollegiate teams, competes under the athletic nickname ofToreros. In 1961 , the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the found ing fatherofUSD , announced that the school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with the friendly relationshi p which ex ists between San Diego and Mexico," His Excellency said at the time. Torero comes from the Spanish term toro, the bu ll , and from the word torear, to fight bulls. All of the contestants in the ring are ca lled toreros. Torero is a general term describing a bullfighter and signifies courage, honor and fidelity. USO student-athletes, li ke the Torero, represent a willingness to stand alone in the ring and accept the chaIlenge. C

The 2005-2006 school year marks the 45th anniversary with Toreros as the official nickname for USO athletic teams.

2005 Season Outlook 2 ,....__ ______ ~

Entering hi s 27 th year as the head coach of the University of San Diego's men's soccer team, Seamus McFadden has built a program rich in tradi– tion and success as one of the top soccer powers on the West Coast. Under the guidance of McFadden, the Toreros reached the NCAA Championship Final in 1992 and have produced double-digit wins in 17 seasons. In addition , USD has captured five West Coast Conference crowns, the last one coming in 2000. However, 2004 proved to be quite an anomaly in San Diego soccer history, as the Toreros finished with an uncharacteri stic 7- 10-3 overall record and a fifth-place fini sh in the WCC with a 4-6-2 mark. Injuries to key players and a young starting line-up played a large role in San Diego's performance last year and the team never adjusted

to the hurdles it faced . "We 've gone from a program that's had 17 years with double-digit wins to one that went through a little transition last year. We played the third-hardest schedule last year," said McFadden. "We had a very young team and we had a lot of injuries." One of the reasons why the Toreros did not fare quite as well as they hoped last season was because of their inability to put the ball in the net. USD had many opportunities to score goals, but was just unable to capitalize in given situations. Mc– Fadden expects that with a year of experience under their belts and a hunger to return San Diego back to the top, his team will be able to finish their chances more often than not this season. "We've had guys in position to score last year, but just weren't able to pull the trigger. That was the biggest bogey for that team," said McFadden. "If we can put our shots away and finish our opportunities, we'll be a much better team." San Diego returns IO starters from last year's squad, only losing First TeamAll-WCC selection Kevin Wilson to gradua– tion, and will tum to this season's trio of captains, senior Tommy Von Bromsen and redshirt juniors Kevin Meissner and Michael Caso, to lead the way. Von Bramsen is expected to anchor the Torero defense and Caso, a 2004 First TeamAll-WCC honoree, is USD 's returning goal scorer after scoring six last season. Meissner is still recovering from an injury and will be brought along

slowly, though he will strengthen the core of the team when he returns to full strength. "Huge," commented McFadden on the impact his captains will make in 2005. "If they are all on the field , I'll be expecting big things from them. " Aiding the tri-captains on the field in 2005 will be seasoned veterans Scott Martin, Calle Rendahl, and Ryan Guy. Martin, who enters his senior year after starting 19 out of 20 games the previous season, will be playing defense for the Toreros this year after spending much of hi s career at the forward position, while fellow classmate Rendahl has the versatility to play either midfielder or defender. Guy, a junior forward who was tabbed a First Team All-WCC and a NSCAAAll-Far West Team selection in 2004, is San Diego 's returning point scorer after tallying 15 points on three goals and a WCC-leading nine assists. McFadden will also anticipate contributions from senior midfielder Jan Prochazka, junior goalkeeper Lance Friesz, sophomore transfer Tannen Weis, sophomore defender Brett Hiroto, and freshman forward Leland Wright. Although the Toreros were picked to fini sh fourth in the WCC this season according to the preseason coaches poll, McFadden knows that his team has the potential and ability to do some damage, not only in conference play, but also during the postseason.

Head Coach Seamus McFadden

HEAD COACH SEAMUS McFADDEN - 27th YEAR With all of the success enjoyed by the Torero soccer teams the last several years - eleven NCAATournament appearances in fifteen seasons - it is easy to overlook the remarkable job Coach Seamus McFadden has done building the program from the ground up. McFadden has been named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year a re– cord seven times (2000, '99, '98, '95, '94, '92, '86); won five WCC championships; has coached eight WCC Defensive Players of the Year, six WCC Offensive Players of the Year and two WCC Freshman Players of the Year. Last year's youthful squad (16 underclassmen) finished 7-10-3 overall, but came through with a stunning 2-0 victory over then 2nd-ranked Santa Clara on October 15, 2004 in Torero Stadium. Two seasons ago his squad went

12-4-4, placed second in the highly com– petitive WCC, and reached the 2nd round of the NCAA Tourney. Three seasons ago he directed USD to a 14-6 mark and first round appearance in the NCAA Tourney. In 2001 the Toreros went 12-4-1 and four seasons ago he directed his Toreros to a 16- 2-2 record, another WCC title and its eighth trip to the NCAAs since 1990. The Toreros reached a national ranking as high as 3rd before finishing the season tenth overall (program-best). McFadden arrived at USD in 1979 and fielded USD's first team in the fall of 1980. That same year he was quoted in the team's yearbook as saying: "I have no doubts that in the near future the University of San Diego will become a force to be reckoned with in Southern California intercollegiate soccer." How prophetic his words turned out to be. The 1986 Toreros won 19 of 24 games. The 1990 squad, led by the first of McFadden's four All-Americans, dropped

just three games the entire season and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Those who know McFadden closely could see the writing on the wall many years earlier, when the Irishman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 record over two seasons while at the same time guiding Clairemont High to consecutive CIF-San Diego Section titles and the La Jolla Cup. The whole puzzle came together in 1992 when McFadden had in place several of San Diego's best local talent. Student-athletes, who in the past had looked outside the city to showcase their talents, were suddenly arriving at Alcala Park. The 1992 Toreros showed remarkable poise under their leader, compiling a 19-5 record and advancing to the NCAA Championship Game. The 53-year old McFadden seems to save his best coaching for the big games. Twice the Toreros have marched onto UCLA's home turf and walked away with stun– ning upsets over the heavily-favored Bruins. In 1994, USD shutout No. 6 ranked N.C. State, 3-0, in front of a national cable television audience. In 1998, USD upset Cal State Fullerton, the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, at Titan Stadium in first round action. In 1999 the Toreros defeated then No. I-ranked Santa Clara on the road, 2-1 in overtime. USD is 8-10 in NCAA Tournament games under McFadden 's direction. McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in History in 1976. That same summer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League. Keeping true to his native roots, McFadden took the 1997 squad on a trip to

his homeland Ireland during the summer for exhibition games against Ireland and Britain 's elite. In the summer of 2002 he is took his players to England. A native of Donegal, Ireland, Seamus and his wife davette have two daughters (Hadley & Rorye) and a son (Conor). The McFaddens reside in Rancho Penasquitos. tems of Independent Soccer League, a men's semi-professional league. He played three seasons for the San Diego Top Guns from 1993-95 and guided his team to the Regional Final– ists in 1994 and 1995.
