DEL MAR COUNTRY CLUB "Home of the Toreros" The lush, Joe Lee-designed Del Mar Country Club, located in Rancho Santa Fe, is one of Southern California's finest. It is the USD Toreros home course throughout the season. The 6,950 yard course winds through the natural terrain of its canyon and valley locale. A stream winds its way through the course and its fairways are bent grass. Rating/Slope: 74.4/133.

The University ofSau Diego golf team is very fortunate to have several fine golf courses available for play and practice throughout the school yea,: Riverwalk Golf Club Located in Mission Valley about six blocks from the USD campus. the completely redesigned Ri,crwalk. site of the former Stardust Country Club. has undulating fainvays. well placed lal-.es. waterfalls and v.ell protected bentgrass greens. Designer Ted Robinson provided a challenging 27 holes of go lf in the heart of the city. Yardage: 6.383 to 6.627. Rating/Slope: 70.5 to 71.6/120 to 123. Shadowridge Country Club The David Rainville designed 6.85-t yard course is located in the gentle hills of Vista. San Diego Maga1ine has called Shadowridge one of the best courses in San Diego County. Rating/Slope: 73.1/ I 2-t. The Meadows Del Mar Golf Club A meandering 6.885-yard Tom Fazio-designed course. which plays to a par 71. takes you along hillsides and meadows and gracefu ll y through ravines. Dramatic scenery and remarkable design. coupled with views that just don't stop. Rating/Slope: 73.5/13-t. Steele Canyon Golf Club A Gary Player signature 27 hole layout in a quiet country setting. Each of the three nine's arc different. The Canyon 9 oilers dramatic elevation changes. while the Ranch 9 borders a working cattle ranch. and the Meadow 9 follow s riparian streams and \,\Oodlands as it surrounds lu xury estate home sites. Four Seasons Resort - Aviara The challenging 7.007-yard layout winds through rolling ,·alleys and overlooks the Batiquitos Lagoon wildlife prescn c. Previewing the 2000-2001 Torero Golf Season

The 2000-2001 University of San Diego Golf Team, under the direction of 15th year coach Frank Cates, returns e ight players from last year's squad that won two tournaments and placed second at three other invitati onals . With the ir strong showing during the recent 2000 fall season, inc luding wins at the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational and 49er Collegiate C lass ic, thi s year's squad will be shooti ng for a spot in the 200 I NCAA Division I Reg ional Tournament. Coach Cates wi ll count on a duo of seni ors - Ryan Hanratty (Plano, Texas) and Jason Gross (San Clemente, Californ ia) - to continue USD's upward rise as one of the program's to watch on the west coast. The Toreros will head into their 200 I spring schedule with a west reg ion ranking of 14th (out of 27 teams) , and a national ranking of 57th . Ryan Hanratty, a Honorable Mention All-West Coast Conference pick a year ago, led the Toreros this past fall with four strong showings out of the six invitationals that USO participated in. He placed 7th overall at the Pacific Invitational with his 2-under par score of 214 (72 -69-73) as USO finished fourth out of seventeen teams ; he finished second overall with a 2 12 showing (70-69- 73) at the Herb Wimberly/New Mexico State Intercollegiate with USO finishing fourth; he placed tied for eighth at the Countrywide

a solid 220 (75-74-71) at the 49er Collegiate, placing thirteenth overall with USO winning the team playoff against host Long Beach State University. Named the WCC Golfer of the Month (October, 2000), Hanratty led USO with a 73.41 average over 17 fall rounds. Jason Gross was a close second to Hanratty this past fall finishing with a 73.59 stroke average over his 17 rounds. His fall season was highlighted by his top-ten finish at the Fal– con-Cross Creek Invitational that USO won; his 12th place show– ing at the Herb Wimberly/New Mexico State Intercollegiate (216; 72-73-71 ): his team-best 221 at the Fresno Lexus Classic; and his sixth place showing at the 49er Coll egiate where he finished with a team-best 216 (75 -67-74).

Other returners expected to play key roles and compete for spots in the Torero rotation include first-year graduate student Jeppe Nielsen (Oslo, Norway), who tied for third at the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational; j unior Berry Henson (La Quinta, CA), who averaged 74.88 this past fa ll over 17 rou nds, inc luding two rounds of 69; junior Andy Brisbois (La Canada, CA), last season's Most Improved Player; and sophomore David Isaacson (No rth Oaks, MN), who placed 11th twice last season and th is past fa ll averaged 75 .1 8 in 17 rounds of action. Rounding out Coach Cates' roster are returning sophomores Brad Sader (Brea, CA) and Andrew Zimmerman (Layton, UT), and a trio of newcomers - sophomore Nick Manfre (Corralitos, CA), and fres hmen Mike Shelly (Tumo n, Guam) and Mark Hepler (Lakeside, CA). The Un iversity of San Diego participates in NCAA Division I and is a member of the West Coas t Confe rence (WCC). For the 54 hole tourney, 36 holes will be played on Monday, March 20th, fo ll owed by 18 holes on Tuesday. Shadowridge is a par 72 course of 6,859 yards with a rating/s lope of 73. 1/ 124. The host USO Toreros placed second at last year's tournament after winning the event in 1999. Last year's team title went to Ca l State Stanislaus.

The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Span ish vill age near Madrid - Alca la de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Comp lut um . the vi ll age was later renamed A l Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university. the University of Alcala. whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. Both institutions are located on a hill

The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country. featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance sty le. The physical beauty of the campus reaches beyond the "eye of the beholder." Reverend Mother Rosalie Hill. one of the insti– tutions founders, believed in the enhancement of learning th rough beauty and harmony. Hence for the University. beauty is a transcendental quality imparted to students as part of their education to truth and goodness: a simple but profound educational philosophy. Since 1984. USO has completed eleven major construction and expansion projects. A five-story parking garage was completed in 1998. The 5.000 seat Jenny Craig Pavilion. USD's new Sports/Activity Center. is due to open in the Fall of 2000: and this past October was the ground breaking ceremony for the Joan B. Kroc Peace Institute. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995. connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992. the university completed the 45.000 square foot Loma Hall, which inc ludes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center. classrooms and labratories. ACADEMICS USO enrolls more than 6.900 students (4.795 undergraduate) who have a choice

of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The uni vers ity's academic units include the Co llege of Arts and Sciences. and the Schools of Business Admin istra– ti on, Education, Law and Nursing. JENNY CRAIG PAVILION • With a donation of $7 million by Sid and Jenny Craig, USD received the lead gift neces– sary to build its much needed $17 million Sports/ Activities Center. The pavilion, which is located at the eastern end of campus between Torero Stadium and Cunningham Baseball Stadium, includes a 5,100-seat gymnasium, coaches of– fices, a 3,800-square-foot fitness center, athletic training facilities, showers and locker rooms, concession stand, and reception room. The Monsignor 1.8. Eagen Plaza off the Pavilion entry, will take advantage of the view across campus to the ocean. The Chet & Marguerite Pagni Family Athletic Hall of Fame is also housed in the facility. The pavilion, which opened this past fall, also serves a range of edu– cational, cultural and athletic events.
