1999-2000 USD Men's Golf Facilities

DEL MAR COUNTRY CLUB "Home of the Toreros" The lush, Joe Lee-designed Del Mar Country Club, located in Rancho Santa Fe, is one of Southern California's finest. It is the USD Toreros home course throughout the season. The 6,950 yard course winds through the natural terrain of its canyon and valley locale. A stream winds its way through the course and its fairways are bent grass. Rating/Slope: 74.4/133.

The University ofSan Diego golfteam is very fortunate to have severalfine golf courses available for play and practice throughout the school year. Riverwalk Golf Club Located in Mission Valley about six blocks from the USD campus, the completely redesigned Riverwalk, site of the former Stardust Country Club, has undulating fairways, well placed lakes, waterfalls and well protected bentgrass greens. Designer Ted Robinson provided a challenging 27 holes of golf in the heart of the city. Yardage: 6,383 to 6.627. Rating/Slope: 70.5 to 71.6/120 to 123. Shadowridge Country Club The David Rainville designed 6.854 yard course is located in the gentle hills of Vista. San Diego Magazine has called Shadowridge one of the best courses in San Diego County. Rating/Slope : 73.1 / 124. Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club is a well manicured course with panoramic mountain and val ley views. dramatic barrancas, running streams and natural boulder formations. There are elevated tees and no parallel fairways. Rated among the top 20 public go lf courses in California. Rating/Slope: 72.9/136. Steele Canyon Golf Club A Gary Player signature 27 hole layout in a quiet country setting. Each of the three nine 's are different. The Canyon 9 offers dramatic elevation changes, while the Ranch 9 borders a working cattle ranch, and the Meadow 9 fo ll ows riparian streams and wood lands as it surrounds luxury estate home sites. Yardage 6,622 yards to 6.942 yards. Rating: 72.2 to 74.0. Four Seasons Resort- Aviara The cha ll enging 7,007-yard layout winds through rolling val leys and overlooks the Batiquitos Lagoon wildlife preserve. Both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine have named the Arnold Palmer designed Aviara as one of the best new resort courses in the country. Rating/Slope: 74.9/14 1. EastLake Country Club Located in the rolling hills of Otay Mesa, Eastlake Country Club is a fine 6,600 yard course in the new Eastlake community. The Ted Robinson designed course has rolling fairways. excellent greens, several lakes and rock formations . Rating/s lope : 70.0/ 116. Rancho Bernardo Inn, West Course Designed by William Bell. with meandering streams that come into play on ten holes. Rating/Slope: 70.6/122. Encinitas Ranch Golf Course A few miles inland from the Pacific Ocean , but with ocean views from nearly every hole. Rating/S lope: 72.2/127. Twin Oaks Golf Course A Ted Robinson design that is demanding but fair. Three signature water holes surrounding a protected wildlife habitat. Rating/Slope: 71.2/ I24. Temecula Creek Inn Nestled in the heart of the Southern California wine country. north of San Diego. A challenging 27 holes of championship golf. Rating/ Slope: From 71.8/123 to 72.6/130. Oaks North Golf Club A 27-hole Ted Robin son execu tive layout. Excellent to develop a short game. Rating/Slope: 55.8/86 to 56.8/88. The 1999-2000 Uni versity of San Diego Golf Team, under the directi on of 14th year coach Frank Cates, returns seven pl ayers from last year's squad that won its own USO Invitati onal in March, placed second at two other tournament s (Point Loma Inv itati onal & Gra nd Canyon Thunderbird Invitati onal), and fini shed ra nked sixteenth in the West Region. Th is year' s squad will be shooting fo r a spot in the 2000 NCAA Di vision I Reg ional Tournament to be he ld May 18-20 in Fresno, Cali fo rni a at the Ri verbend Golf Course. Heading the li st of returne rs is seni or captain Patrick Hawkins (Dall as, TX), a two-time West Coas t Conference First Team se lecti on, and two-time WCC All- Academi c Team pick. Las t season he fini shed with a 74.47 stroke average fo r 3 1 rounds, and hi s season was hi ghli ghted by hi s first pl ace fini sh at the 1999 USO In vitational. He also earned top-ten fini shes with hi s 3rd place showing at the Falcon Invitational in September, and hi s I0th place fini sh at the Po int Loma Invitati onal. Additi on– all y, Patri ck was chosen out of 375 USO student- athl etes as the uni versity's 1999 NCAA Outstanding Sportsperson of the Year nominee. Head Coach - 14th Year sophomore Cullen Brasfield (Reno, Nevada). Nielsen j oins Hawkins as the onl y two seni ors on thi s year's squad; the Norweg ian has worked hard on hi s game and is ready to make a move into more consistent rounds. Hanratty prov ides the team with outstanding consistency and is ex pected to be in every tournament line-up. Thi s past fall he placed fo urth at the Santa C lara Invitational, and last March ti ed fo r second at the USO Inv itational. Gross re– turns for hi s second season after transferring into USO mid-year in 1999; he averaged 75 .27 over his 11 rounds. He posted a top-ten fini sh at the Grand Canyon/Thunderbird Invitat ional where he pl aced 9th . Brasfi eld was USD' s most consistent newcomer in 1999, and has pl ayed soli d go lf thi s season. Thi s past fall he tied fo r 2nd at the Real Del Mar C lass ic in October; fini shed 6th at the Santa Clara Invitati onal; and tied fo r 2nd place in the Nevada State Amateur Champi onship in Jul y. Round ing ou t the returners will be sophomores Berry Henson (La Qui nta, Cali– fornia) and Andy Brisbois (La Canada, Californi a). Last spring Henson placed fo urth in USD's Invitational, and backed that up wi th a 7th place fi nish a the Grand Canyon/ Thunderb ird Invitational. Coach Cates brought in five fres hmen thi s season for the Torero golf program. Early ind icati ons look promi sing -- David Isaacson, from North Oaks, Minnesota, is the state's two-time hi gh school champion. He cracked the starting line-up twice dur–

The University of San Diego SETTING The Uni versity of San Diego is an indepe ndent Catholic institution of hi gher ed ucation. Fou nded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mi ss ion Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campu s is named Alca la Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego and the wo rld famo us San Diego Zoo. Hi stori c O ld Town is just minutes away as well . The city of San Diego along with th is campus traces the ir ori gins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish vi ll age near Madrid - Alca la de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the vill age was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Chri sti ans recaptured the vill age centuri es later and found ed a uni vers ity, the Uni versity of Alca la, whose buildings became the inspiration fo r USD's style. The USO campu s is regarded as one of the most arc hitectu ra ll y unique in stituti ons in the country, featuring 18 major buildings des igned in an orn amenta l 16th century Spanish Renaissance sty le. The physical beauty of the campu s reaches beyond the "eye of the beholder. " Reverend Mother Rosa li e Hill , one of the insti– tutions fo unders, be lieved in the enh ancement of learning through beauty and harmony. Hence for the Uni versi ty, beauty is a transcendental quality imparted to students as part of their educat ion to tru th and good ness: a simp le but profound ed ucational phi losoph y. Since 1984 , USO has completed e leven major construction and expans ion projects. A five-story parking garage was compl eted in 1998. The 5,000 seat Jenny Craig Pav ili on, USD's new Sports/Ac tiv ity Center, is due to open in the Fal l of2000; and this past October was the ground breaking ceremony for the Joan B. Kroc Peace In stitute. A landscaped fo untain pl aza was fini shed in the fa ll of 1995 , connecting the entrances of the lmmacul ata and Hughes Admi nistration Center. In 1992, the uni vers ity compl eted the 45 ,000 sq uare foo t Loma Hall , which incl udes an ex pa nded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and labratori es. of more th an 50 undergrad uate and graduate degree programs. The university's academi c units include the Co ll ege of Arts and Sciences, and the Schoo ls of Business Admini stra– ti on, Ed ucati on, Law and Nursing. Sid and Jenny Craig, USD received the lead gift necessary to proceed with planning its much needed $17 million Sports/Activities Center. The pavilion, which will be located at the eastern end of campus between Torero Stadium and Cunningham Baseball Stadium, will include a 5,000-seat gymnasium, coaches offices, fitness center and athletic training fa– cilities, showers and locker rooms, concession stand, and reception room. The Monsignor I.B. Eagen Plaza off the Pavilion entry, will take advantage of the view across campus to the ocean. The USD Athletic Hall of Fame will also be housed in the facility. Construc– tion is underway with a scheduled opening slated for Fall 2000.

The Un iversity of SanDiego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearl y all sports and competes in sixteen interco ll eg iate sports on the NCAA Di vision I leve l. The foo tball team compl eted its sixth season in the Pi oneer Football League . Women's sports include: basketball , crew, cross country, soccer, so ftball , swimming, tenni s and voll ey ball. Men's sports include: baseball , basketball , crew, cross country, go lf, footba ll , soccer and tenni s. Since 1990 USO teams have won seven conference champion ships; made 22 post– season appearances; had 19 Conference Coaches of the Year; 16 Conference Pl ayers o f the Year, 11 Conference Freshman of the Year, three WCC Scholar Athl etes of the Year and 2 1 NCAA All -Ameri cans. Zuzana Lesenarova, a three-time NCAA All-Ameri can for women's tenni s, already has won the first two legs of the Co ll egiate Grand Slam thi s fa ll ( 1999) with win s at the Nationa l C lay Courts and Ri viera All -American.
