TOREROS DEFINED

The University of San Diego, which sponsors sixteen NCAA Division I intercollegiate teams, competes under the athletic nickname ofToreros. In 1961, the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the founding father of USO, announced that the school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with the friendly relationship which exists between San Diego and Mexico," His Excellency said at the time. Torero comes from the spanish term toro, the bull, and from the word torear, to fight bulls. All of the contestants in the ring are called toreros. Torero is a general term describing a bullfighter and signifies courage, honor and fidelity. USO student-athletes, like the Torero, represent a willingness to stand alone in the ring and accept the challenge. 2 TOREROS LOOK TO CONTINUE SUCCESSFUL WAYS IN 2002 Seventh year head coach Kevin McGarry returns 54 players and 9 starters from last year's 6-3 club that finished tied for second place in the Pioneer Football League. Despite losing some key players from last year's successful campaign, McGarry believes there is plenty to be excited about with his returning class and excellent group of newcomers. The offense will again be directed by junior QB Eric Rasmussen, a 2001 Honorable Mention All-PFL pick a year ago after completing 147-of-254 passes for 2,035 yards and 15 TDs. He ranked 2nd in the PFL in both passing efficiency and total offense. He will have a solid core ofreceivers to throw to - senior Anthony Valanos; sophomore wideouts Michael Gasperson and Jerome Foster; junior tight ends Jeff Incerty and Kyle O'Connor; and multi-purpose athletes Brent Labarrere and Adam Hannula. Rasmussen will be pushed by junior QB Brian Kirkpatrick, a quality backup with a cannon for an arm who should see playing time this year, and redshirt freshman Adam Hannula. The Toreros' backfield will be led by the senior tandem ofRB Kenneth Villalobos and TB Phillip Thrash. Villalobos earned Offensive Player of the Year honors last season after rushing for a team-best 592 yards and 11 TDs. Thrash placed second on the team with 418 yards rushing. The running back group will also be bolstered by the efforts of senior FB Joseph Tagaloa and sophomore RB Baxter Box. No doubt, the success of USD's running attack will be spearheaded by the return of senior center Justin Dixon, a two-time First Team All-PFL pick. He has been one of the best and most

consistent offensive linemen in the PFL the past two seasons. Additionally, senior guard Uzman Nazir will join Dixon on the offensive line and provide leadership and be a mainstay of the offensive unit. Others expected to see action include sophomore returners Jason Kehrer (6- 3, 229, left tackle) and Keith Zapalac ( 6-4, 255, right tackle), and transfers Ariel Bellofiore ( 6-1, 341, Idaho, left guard) and Matt Shubert (6-5, 276, Sacramento State, right tackle). The defense was hardest hit by graduating seniors, but like the offense, has enough key starters and returners back to again be a stingy unit for its opponents. The 2001 Torero defense ranked 14th in the nation in rushing defense. Leading the way will be junior LB Andy Guzenski, a 200 I Honorable Mention All-PFL pick after leading the team in tackles with 59 stops. He will be joined in the middle by senior linebacker Michael DiPasquale -- they will be pushed by senior Michael Zimmerman and sophomore Jeffrey Langdon. The defensive line unit will be in good hands with a quality group of returners -- senior tackle Josh Noga (5-11, 281 ), senior Michael Tabata (6-1, 208), junior end Chris Conroy (6-2, 237), junior NG Kevin Reade (6-1, 267), and sophomores Ashur Benjamin (6-1, 242) and Daniel Howard (6-4, 237). Howard tied a USD single-game record against Wagner in the team's season final after being credited with three quarterback sacks. Transfer Greg Erlbaum (6-3, 283), who joined the Toreros last spring, will compete for one of the starting spots at tackle. Look for senior veteran Wesley Morgan and junior Gavin Ng to get the starting nods at comer back where the Toreros expect to be very strong. The rest of the secondary slots wi II be competed for by some quality returners who have been waiting in the wings -- junior

Adam Combs (4th on team in tackles with 52) and senior Marvin Banks are back at invert; senior Tim Duerr and junior Bryan Newbrough will battle it out for the starting nod at free safety; and junior Kyle Fitzgerald and sophomore Paul Kumer are the leading candidates for rover. The special teams unit will be led by junior return specialist Gavin Ng, a 2002 Pre– Season All-America Candidate (The Sports Network). Last year Ng averaged 36.9 yards on kickoff returns and 9.4 yards on punt returns . Look for Baxter Box and Joseph Tagaloa to also get a chance to make some returns in 2002. The Toreros have a trio of quality kickers that wi II be competing to replace graduated senior Dylan Mora, a 2001 All-America punter and the team's top kicker a year ago. Returners Brent Labarrere and Rafael Ocampo are back, and will be pushed by transfer Adam Will– PFL COACHES' POLL North iams (Saddleback JC). The Toreros will be embarking on one of their toughest schedules y~t since joining the I-AA ranks back in 1993.

After opening the season at NAIA power Azusa Pacific, the Toreros will also travel to Ivy League opponent Yale University on September 21st. Nonconference home dates include La Verne, PFL South champion Jacksonville, along with West– ern Oregon and Southern Oregon. The Toreros will also have to face PFL North Division oppo– nents Butler, Valparaiso, Drake and perrenial power Dayton.

The University of San Diego celebrates its 40th year of football this season, and head coach Kevin McGarry enters his 27th season of involvement with the program. Entering his 7th year at the helm, he also played two seasons (l 976-77), and was an assistant coach for eighteen seasons. With 54 returners and 9 starters back from last season, McGarry is optimistic the Toreros will continue their success off of last year's 6-3 campaign. The 200 I club also tied for second pl ace in the Pioneer Football League and ranked 14th among NCAA I-AA teams in rushing defense. Coach McGarry enters the 2002 season with a six-year record of 29-31. In 1997 McGarry directed the Toreros to an 8-3 overall mark and a school-best second place finish in the Pioneer Football League with its 4-1 mark. The 1997 campaign was USD ' s best showing si nce moving to the NCAA Division I-AA ranks and the PFL confere nce in 1993. The '97 club became onl y the fourth USD squad to achieve at least eight victories in 35 years of Torero football , and it was the program's most victories since the 1981 season. The team's 33.6 points per game average ranks second all -time in USD football.

The tenth coach to direct the Torero football program since its start in 1956, Kev in is the first USD graduate to head the position. McGarry is no stranger to USD football. Prior to being named the head coach in 1996, he was an assistant coach at the University of San Diego for eighteen seasons, including the last fourteen as the defensive coordinator and defensive bac ks coach. He became a full-time assistant for football in 1985 - hi s first seven years ( 1978-84) were split between football, women's softball (head coach) and as an elementary school teacher. In addition to his on-the-field duties, Kevi n was also responsible for recruiting and as li aison for the USD Football Alumni Club.

"Kev in ' s years of experience at USD have prepared him well for this position," stated Tom Iannacone, Director of Athletics. "He clearly understands the role of the football program within the mi ssion of the uni versity."

Over the past twenty-four seasons with Kevin on the coaching staff, USD has accumul ated an overall record of 130-105-3, including seventeen seasons with records of .500 or better. Of the nine USD foo tball players that have been named GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since 1981, eight have come from the defensive side of the ball, including seven defensive backs. In 1987 the Torero defense set a school record for shutouts in a season with four, and the team gave up just I00 points in ten contests and finished 6-3- 1. Prior to joining the USO coaching staff in 1978, Kevin was a two-year letterwinner on the USO footba ll squad ( 1976-77), earni ng co-Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1977. He pl ayed two years ( 1974-75) at Saddleback College in Mi ss ion Viejo, California, earning Most Valuable Player honors in 1975. He received both hi s Bachelor of Arts in Education ( 1979), and hi s Master' s Degree in Education Admin istration ( 1985) from the Un ivers ity of San Diego. GREG QUICK Offensive Coordinator & Offensive Line Coach Greg Quick returns for his fourth season where he will again be the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. While directing his "Surf & Turf" offense at USO, numerous Toreros have excelled in hi s system - most notably receiver Dylan Ching, quarter– back Mike Stadler and running back Oscar Arzu, all recent graduates who entertained the Torero fans while setting both single season and career records. Prior to USO, the Painesville, Ohio na–

tive spent the previous decade orchestrating the renewal of two NCAA Division Ill football programs. At St. Norbert College, in DePere, Wisconsin, he directed his squad to a share of the division title in 1994; and while at the University of Chicago, helped the 1993 pro–

gram amass the most wins since the Amos Alonzo Stagg team of 1929. Other coaching stops have included Claremont-Mudd Colleges (Def. Coor. ; 1988-89), Edinboro University (Def. Coor. ; 1986-88), New Mexico State (LB's; 1985-86), Heidelberg College (Off. Coor.; 1984-85), St. Edward HS (Def. Coor.; 1983-84), and Emporia State (Def. Coor.; 1981-83 and Off. Line; 1979-81 ). Coach Quick's playing career at Baldwin-Wallace College in Brea, Ohio, was highlighted by the team winning the 1978 NCAA Divi sion III National Champi– onship. An accomplished motivational speaker, Quick has delivered his "Quick Success" message to numerous businesses and organizations. Greg and his wife Jeannie, who have been married 23 years, reside in the Scripps Ranch area of San Diego with their six children: Phil, Nate, Bonnie, Ben, Brittany and Corey.

JASON DESJARLAIS Defensive Coordinator & Linebackers Coach Jason Desjarlais enters his first season as a full-time assistant with USO. DesJarlais, who will be the team's Defensive Coordinator and Recruiting Coordinator, replaced Bob Tompson who returned to Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio to become the Offensive Coordinator. DesJarlais returns to USO where he was the team 's defensive line coach for the 2000 season. This past season he was defensive line coach at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. While at Bates College he was also in charge of recruiting areas for Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York and Pennsy lvania. Additionally, he earned hi s certification as a Strength and Conditioning coach. Prior to first joining USO in 2000, he was defensive line coach for two seasons at Humboldt State (1998- L 999), and forone year at Western Montana College (1997) . A two-time All-America defensive lineman at Western Montana College, Jason helped lead hi s team to three Frontier Conference Championships. In 1994 and 1995, Western Montana College was

the NAIA national runner-up.

After graduating from Western Montana College in 1997 with a B.S. in Physical Education and Biology, Jason went on to earn his Masters of Science degree in Kinesiology from Humboldt State University in I999. From Ronan, Montana, Jason prepped at Ronan Hi gh School where he was a three-sport letterman .

MIKE RISH - Wide Receivers, 19th Year

Mike Rish is beginning his 19th season on the Torero staff. He returns to coach the receivers, something he has done for seventeen of the past eighteen Torero seasons. Mike played for USD from 1979-83 where he posted career numbers that make him one of the best receivers ever to play at USD -- he ranks second all-time with IO I receptions, 18 receiving touchdowns and 1,722 receiving yards. He held the school marks in all three career receiving departments from 1983 through 1997; he was passed recently by Torero re– ceiver Dylan Ching. In 1983 he was selected the team's

scholar-athlete by the National Football Foundation and College Hall ofFame. In the Toreros' nationally-televised game between Occidental in 1982, Rish was named the CBS Chevrolet Player of the Game. Mike graduated from USD with an Accounting degree in 1984. He is the Vice President for Secondary Marketing for Guild Mortgage Company in San Diego.

JOE ROSIELLO - Defensive Line/Special Teams Coordinator, 3rd Year Joe Rosiello begins his third season with the Toreros where he will again coach the defensive line. For the second straight year he will be the program's Special Teams Coordinator. He brings a wealth of coaching experience with his most recent stop before USO being at the Coast Guard Academy where he was defensive line coach for two seasons. He also gained coaching experience at Holy Cross in 1997, assisting the linebackers; he coached the offensive line at Fordham in I996; and he was a student assistant for the offensive line at Boston University in 1995 . A 1996 graduate of Boston University where he earned his B.S. degree in Physical Education (Human Movement), Joe played two seasons at BU in I991-92 as a defensive lineman. From Brooklyn, New York, he attended Stuyvesant High School where he earned two varsity letters in football and graduated in 1991.

THAD PORLAS - Quarterbacks/2nd Year Thad Porlas begins his second season with the Toreros. This year he moves to the offensive side of the ball where he will coach the quarterbacks; last year he directed the inverts on defense. A native San Diegan, Thad and his wife Sue have three children: Dane, Kalani and Cheynna. Porlas came to USO from Mesa College where he coached four seasons with receivers and kick returners. Prior to that, he spent six years (1992-97) at Point Lorna High School coaching receivers and defensive backs -- during that stretch Point Lorna advanced to the CIF playoffs each season. No stranger to USO, Thad played football for the Toreros for two seasons (1982-83) as a wide receiver. He graduated with his B.A. in Business Administration, and later earned two M.S. degrees in Education/Mathematics and Special Education. The past twelve years he has taught for the San Diego City Schools with Special Education.

RICHARD SANCHEZ - Running Backs, 1st Year Richard Sanchez begins his first year with the Toreros where he will coach the running backs. He brings a wea lth of coaching experience with him. The last two years he was at San Diego State in the role ofoffensive graduate assistant working with the offensive line and returners. Prior to that he was the Athletic Di rector and Head Football Coach at San Diego High School for two years. Between 1993-97 he coached at Montc lair HS in San Bernardino County, and at Las Cruces HS in Las Cruces, New Mexico. A 1993 graduate of New Mexico State (B.A. in Physical Education), Richard also played for the Aggies between '89-90 as a wide receiver. After graduation he played one year ofsemi-pro ball with the San Bernardino Blitz as a wide receiver in 1994. A San Diego native, Richard played two years at Southwestern College in Chu la Vista, and graduated from Sweetwater HS in 1986. Richard and his wife, Maria, have one daughter, Kristiana.

KYLE SLUSSER - Inverts/1st Year Kyle Slusser begins his first year on the staff where he will be in charge of the inverts on the defensive side of the ball. No stranger to USO, Slusser played for the Toreros the past five campaigns. This past season he was selected the team's Defensive Player of the Year; was a First Team All -Pioneer Football League pick; and was named a Honorable Mention I-AA Mid-Major All-American by The Football Gazette. He leaves USO as the program's all -time leader in interceptions with 15; he also shares the single-game mark of 3 picks. Among USO I-AA players, he ranks fourth all -time with 261 total tack les. Duri ng the 1998 & 1999 seasons he earned 2nd Team AII -PFL honors. From Alta Lorna, California, Kyle prepped at Alta Lorna HS where he was a four-sport letterman. He graduated from USO this past year with a major in Sociology.

CHARLIE STANSBURY - Tight Ends, 1st Year Charlie Stansbury begins his first year with the Torero coaching staff where he will be in charge of the tight ends. Charlie was part of the Torero program as a player since 1998, but battled injuries throughout his collegiate career. During the 1999 season he caught five passes for 38 yards with a long reception of 18 yards. This past year he graduated from USO with a degree in Communications, and a minor in Sociology. Prior to USO Charlie attended Paso Robles High School where he lettered in both football and baseball. During his senior year in football , he was team MVP, All -Los Padres League, All-County, All – CIF and a scho lar-ath lete. The football team advanced to the playoffs during both his sen ior and sophomore campaigns.
