HEAD COACH BRIAN FOGARTY The 1984 USO Torero football program will be under the direction of second year coach Brian Fogarty. Last season Brian led the Toreros to a 5-5 record. Against Division Ill com- petition, USO had an impressive 5-1 mark. Before coming to USO, Brian coached at St. Francis High School in La Canada, California where he was head coach for four years and an assistant coach for nine years prior. In his thirteen years at St. Francis he missed the playoffs only once. As Head Coach , his record was 28-18-2 and his teams made the playoffs all four years in the Big 5 Conference and reached the semi-finals twice. In 1982 his team won the prestigious Del Rey League Championship. He coached the San Gabriel Valley Hall of Fame All Star game in 1980. His coaching background also includes eight years of high school basketball and three years of baseball. Brian and his wife Vicki have three children, Bridget, Joe and Colleen.

UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego is an independent, Catholic university located on a 170-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e. , Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major business, cultural , residential , and recreational areas, as well as the rail , bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USO is presently experiencing record attendance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3300, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 5200. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration, Education , Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USO from 24 foreign countries. Recreation and Athleti c activities are expanding rapidly and include: sailing, crew, yoga, karate, surfing , modern dance, backpacking, and ballet. USD's intercollegiate sports for men include baseball , football , basketball , cross-country, golf, soccer, crew, tennis and rifle. In women 's intercollegiate sports, USO fields programs in basketball , cross-country, crew, softball , swimming, tennis, and volleyball.

LARRY CAUDILLO Quarterbacks and Receivers The senior member of the coaching staff, Larry begins his 10th season at USO. He moves back to the offensive unit after coaching outside linebackers in 1983. Charley starts his second year at USO after coaching the offensive line in '83. This season Charley w ill be in charge of the linebackers. Before coming to USO, Charley coached at Emporia State Univ. in Kansas where

he was a graduate assistant with the defensive line. He is a graduate of Friends University in Wichita, Kansas , where he also assisted in football for two years. Charley received his M.A. from Emporia.

Kickers and Special Teams Kevin is starting his second year as USD's Assist- ant Coach to Kickers. He will also assist Larry Caudillo with Special Teams.

JEFF WEISS Running Backs

A 1983 graduate from Cal State Northridge, Jeff comes to us from Crespi High School where he was the Defensive Coordinator for the sophomore team. Prior to Crespi , Jeff assisted at Chatsworth High School dur- ing the '81 and '82 seasons where he coached receivers, linebackers and ends. SKIP WOOD Equipment Supervisor

Kevin was USD's place- kicker from 1978 to 1982 while majoring in Political Science. Kevin is currently in his second year of Law School at USD.

1984 USD TORERO OUTLOOK After posting a 5-5 record in his rook ie season, Head Coach Brian Fogarty wi ll be making a few changes in '84. New to the coaching staff are Jeff Weiss (Running Backs) and Jack Duby (Defensive Line). Helping out in student-assistant ro les will be ex-players Phil Spencer (Defensive secondary) and Gary Holley (Offensive Line). Larry Caudil lo has moved from defense to offense while Charley Giangrosso will take charge of the linebackers. Kevin McGarry will continue as the Defensive Coordinator and Brian the Offensive Coordinator. The coaching staff wil l have to replace USD's three most productive offensive players from a year ago and eleven starters altogether. Gone from the Toreros' '83 offensive unit are QB Phil Spencer (895 yards passing), leading rusher Jerome McA lpin (1,018 yards rushing) and top re- ceiver Mike Rish (23 catches for 417 yards and 5 TD's). The four top quarterback prospects in camp were Roger Meyers, Craig lssacson, Eric Miller and Greg Moll. Roger Meyers has the inside track for the starting QB position even though he only threw one pass in '83 as Spencer's back-up. Sophomore Ed McCoy (5-11 , 175), senior Mike Sears (6-2, 175), sophomore Scott Reilly (6- 1, 170) and freshman Mark Trafton (6-1 , 175) are the top prospects for wide receivers with McCoy likely to be Meye rs ' favorite target. Ed gathered in six passes for 69 yards in his freshman year. Freshman Lionel DeMorst (6-2, 192) w ill be pushing junior returner Mitch Greene (6- 1, 198) for the starting tightend spot. Returnees for the running back spots are small but talented. Juniors Mark Covarrubias (5-5, 165) and Tom Woodward (5-9, 180) will vye for the tailback position while sen iors Len Savallo (5-8, 175) and Rick Butler (5-11 , 195) push each other for the starting fullback spot. Two tran sfers will also see action, Craig Frye (6 -1 , 185) from Menlo College and Mike Speltz (5 -9, 170) from Harbor College. The offensive line wi ll be anchored by senior Steve Connolly (6-2, 240). Steve should start at right tackle after missing the last year and a half with torn ligaments in his right knee. Junior Dante Sorianello (6-0, 220) should get a starting position while Community College transfers Dave Smola (Southwestern) will play center or tackle and John Savage (Riverside City) wi ll play center or guard. Leading th e defensive attack will be senior strong safety Greg Stein (5-10, 180), who finished second to Chip Jarvis with 81 tackles last season. In 1982, Greg was named USD's Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. Assistant Coach Kevin McGarry lost most of his secondary to gradua- tion, however, sophomore Roger Cloutier should pin down a starting position at cornerback. The li nebacker corps looks strong wit h senior John Harper (6-0, 195) and sophomore Gene Gutierrez (5- 10, 190) as possible outside linebackers. Senior George Hawley (64 tackles) and juniors Pete McMahon (6-0, 190) and Mike Hamilton (6-0, 195) wi ll play inside. On the defensive line, Joe Kinnally (5- 10, 190) returns for his senior season at nose guard and junior Brian Laliberte (5-9, 210) will play tackle. Senior Jerry Glassmaker (5-8, 180) and sophomore Mike Catania (5-10, 185) should also see action on the line. Junior Jack Kratochvil will handle the kicking chores after successfully taking over in mid-season while Pat McNamara and Greg Wilson will compete for the punting duties. The Toreros schedu le will be demanding with games against three Division II schools (Chico State, Cal Lutheran and St. Mary's) and a home-and- home series with Azusa Pacific University (NAIA Divisi on II). " It should be an interesting year because of our youth. We'll definitely need a few key people to come through for us. This year's schedule will allow us to get a little breather inbetween our Division II opponents whereas last year's schedule ended with four straight Division II opponents. If we play we ll we should go at least 5-5. I wouldn 't say that is our goal because I shoot for higher goals than that. I will say that I'll be disappointed if we go anything less," stated Head Coach Brian Fogarty.

Game Time: 7:30 PM at Torero Stadium this Saturday, September 15th. STAGS 1984 OUTLOOK The Stags, under the direction of head coach JOHN ZINDA (65-66-2, 16 years ) , ar e coming off a 3-6 season in '83. A member of the S.C.I.A.C., Claremont-Mudd returns 10 of 11 defensive starters and 7 offensive starters. Players to watch include senior QB STEVE OLSON (141 of 264 for 1596 yds and 7 TD s) ; sophomore WR WALTER SCOTT (35 catches for 582 yds and 3 TDs); junior WR LARRY O'BRIEN (2 6 catches for 296 yds and 2 TDs); senior WR CHRIS GRIFFIN (23 passes for 230 yds and 1 TD); junior LB BRIAN BOONE (55 tackles, 2 interceptions); sophomore DB ROBB I E KAY (6 interceptions); junior LB PETER MOORE (60 tackles) and kicker-punter LOU RUDICH (6/11 FG's, 9/11 X-points). Although the Stags return 10 of 11 starting defenders, they will miss graduated noseguard BILL MCCOLL (5-10 190) who was the 1983 team M.V.P. Bill was a 4-year starter for CMS after prepping at Patrick Henry HS in San Diego. Last week CMS partici- pated in a controlled scrimmage with Riverside City College and Mt. Sac Junior Colle ge . TOREROS DROP OPENER 13-9 The Universit y of San Diego gridders opened up the 1984 campaign with a 13-9 s e t- back at the hands of the Univ. of Redlands. Redlands QB Wes Dell connected on 15 of 19 first half passes for 167 yards as the Bulldogs took a 13-3 halftime lead. The fir s t half was definetly the difference as the Toreros' were outgained in total yards 202 to 49. USD kicker Jack Kratochvil nailed a 48 yard FG with two seconds left in the hal f to prevent a shutout. The Toreros play ed much better in the second half as they stopped the Bulldogs offensively and got their own offense untracked. Junior TB Mark Covarrubias gain ed 75 yards on 10 carries in the second half and 92 yards for the game. Sophomore QB Roge r Meyers had his problems connecting on just 5 of 18 passes for 92 yards as he found him- self throwing on the run most of the evening. Defensively, inside linebackers Mike Hamilton (17 tackles) and Pete McMahon (1 3 tackles) had outstanding performances. Mike added two QB sacks while Pete had one. The Torero defense gave up just one Redlands first down in the second hal f after the Bulldogs collected 13 in the first 30 minutes. "We definetly played like the young team that we are. As far as this week's opponent, Claremont-Mudd hasn't played a game yet so we don't know much about them. They are a good Division III football team and tend to pass more than run under Coach Zinda. This week we'll just concentrate on our own problems and try to minimize our errors from the opener," added Coach Brian Fogarty.

USD FOOTBALL STADIUM The USO Football Stadium was built in 1955, to pro- vide students the opportunity to play intercollegiate football and other outdoor sports. Set in a natural bowl , the Stadium has 4,000 perma- nent seats located behind the home side of the field . The seats are set in cement and consist of aluminum bleachers. There is a four-foot wall surrounding the playing surface that was built in 1976, in order to keep the field free from potential mud slides . At the open _end of the stadium is the scoreboard , which was generously donated by the Pepsi Bottling Company of San Diego. Located above the stands are the restrooms , the football office , the men 's locker room and the press box. The press bo x, which is completely enclosed by glass , houses the official timer, scoreboard operator, announcer, USO coaches and members of the local and visiting media. The University of San Diego hopes you enjoy your visit to the USO Football Stadium and that you will be back soon .
