USO MVP's
No single person has done more for the USO baseball pro– gram than Hall of Fame head coach John 'J.C.' Cunningham. Directing the Toreros' program between 1964-98, Cunning– ham tota led 843 career victories, ranking him in the top forty in all-time victories among Division I coaches. Under his guidance, USO enjoyed sixteen winning seasons, including two World Series appearances in 1971 and 1978. Cunning– ham is not only in the USO Athletic Hall of Fame, but is also honored as a Hall of Farner by the American Baseball Coaches Association. His teams won 30 or more games seven times, with four of his squads advancing to post-season play. His 1971 and 1978 squads won regional tit les and advanced to the Division IICollege World Series. He was named DistrictVIII Coach of the Year in 1971.ln 1979, the Toreros moved into the Division I ranks and later joined the West Coast Conference in 1985. Over the next 14 years, Cunningham won 343 WCC games. He was twice named theWCC Coach of the Year (1993 & 1998). USD's home field (Cunningham Baseball Stadium) is named after the legendary coach,who was essential in its construction.Cunningham was recently the recipient of t he 2005 Lefty Gomez Award,one of the most prestigious awards in all of amateur baseball.He has remained involved with the USO athletic department as its Director of Transportation

John Wathan (1968-70)
An All-American catcher in 1970, Wathan batted .430 with 39 RBIs and was named the team MVP. In three seasons,Wathan posted a career batting aver– age of .347 and stole 67 bases; both remain among the best career numbers in San Diego history. He was the Kansas City Royals first selection in the 1971 January free agent draft. He played his entire 15-year professional career with the Royals and was a member of each of the Royals' six A.L. West Championship teams, as well as the World Series squads of 1980 and 1985. He began his coaching career in 1986 and was manager of the Royals from 1987-91. Having coached w ith the California Angels and the Boston Red Sox, the 1994 season wasWathan's 23'd in professional baseball. One of the best players to ever wear a USO uniform, Dineen starred for the Toreros from 1971 -73. He was recognized as a three-time NCAA Division II Al l-American as an outfielder and a two-time USO team MVP. Dineen is the only San Diego player to own a career batting average above .400 (.409). After an outstanding 1973 campaign at USO, in which he hit .411 , Dineen was drafted by the New York Yankees and made his major league debut on June 14, 1975. He had a brief stint on the 1976 Yankees team that went on to win the World Series, finishing his major league career in 1978 with Philadelphia. Kerry Dineen (1971 -73)
