Pr. Jurns As a an D iegan, Dr. J ames M. Burns graduated from San Diego State University with two degrees (a BS and a MS) and worked for the Astronautics Division of General D ynamics for four years before obtaining his DBA from H arvard Business School. He served on the faculty of the Business School at the University of Southern California for seven years before being recru ited as a fac ulty member by the foundling School of Business Administration at USD in the fall of 1974. In J anuary of 1975, Dr. Burns assumed the role of Dean during its ramp-up stage of development. He was responsible for taking the School of Business Administration from a handful of faculty in l 97 5, transforming it from a regional start-up organ ization into a robust unit whose scale and scope increased more than tenfold , as did its reputation. He also helped obtain resources for the construction of Olin Hall and was significantly involved in obtaining the endowment that created the Ahlers Center for International Business. Over the years, Dean Burns helped promote international business and university linkages in Mexico, China, Germany, Hungary, Russia and South America. Dr. Burns stepped down as Dean in l 997 and returned to the faculty as Professor of Management. After 32 years, Dr. Burns will be leaving USD but he will be remembered as a shining example of the values on which USD is founded and in recognition of his service and character he was awarded the distinction of Professor Emeritus and Dean Emeritus.

Caps and gowns. Graduation announcements. New jobs, new cars, a new stage of life. The end of senior year brings many exciting things. However, it also brings the time when you have to say goodbye. Your last class with a favorite professor, your last Sunday night Mass at Founders Chapel , your last walk around campus as a student. Graduation means moving on and leaving the place you have called home for the past four years. Although you may leave a piece of yourself at USD, you also leave with many important lessons you have learned throughout the years. Seniors know the importance of hard work. They know how to job-hunt and execute the perfect interview. They have also honed their persuasive skills during four years of attempting to crash already filled classes. The seniors will be missed by all of us here at USD, but they will not be forgotten. They will return in years to come to see a growing university, a university they will be proud to call their alma mater.

"There is a good reason they call these ceremonies 'commencement exercises.' Graduation is not the end; it's the

beginning." Orrin Hatch

When you first step onto campus as a freshman , your life is forever changed. Everyone can remember the first few days of orientation: the excitement, meeting new people, and finding your way around. Also, there is the unmistakable feeling of being part of a greater whole: the USD student body. The enthusiasm and fresh perspective of the underclassmen are important aspects of the university. It is during the first few years of college that you grow and mature and build a foundation for your life ahead. Through their involvement and carefree attitude, the underclassmen serve as a reminder for the upperclassmen of the importance of enjoying life. They also grow to be role models for those new students who arrive each year.

"People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing." Dale Carnegie

FoctAlt!f The professors here at the University of San Diego are the backbone of the school. Without their hard work and dedication the university would not be what it is today. Early mornings , late nights of grading, office hours , and meetings. Our professors give so much of their time and themselves for one main purpose: so that we may learn. They have become friends and mentors. They serve as an inspiration to all of their students by setting an example of academic excellence and enthusiasm.

The life of a student athlete is challenging. Not only do they have to stay on top of their schoolwork, they also have to put in many hours of practice time per week. Early mornings, long afternoons, night practices, trav– eling on weekends, whenever a student athlete is not in class or sleeping he or she can usually be found with their team. Despite the many challenges that being an athlete brings, those who do it wouldn't trade it for any– thing. They do it for the moments when all the hard work pays off. They do it for that winning touchdown, for that resonating homerun hit, for pulling ahead of the boat next to you in the final 250 meters of a race. Our student athletes here at USO deserve recognition for their physical and academic stamina as well as their dedication to the Torero spirit.

"Continuous effort - not strength or intelligence - is the key to unlocking our potential." Winston Churchill

CICAbs & Orgonizo1ion.s "Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. What– ever you call it, who- ever you are, you need one." Jane Howard The idea of sisterhood and brotherhood are a vital part of student life at the University of San Diego. Greek organizations provide a way for students to come together and be part of a meaningful tradition. When students become part of Greek life, they become part of a new family. They form lifelong friendships with their fellow students here at USD, as well as network with other students across the nation. In addition to the social aspect, Greek organizations also practice philanthropy. They raise funds for worthy causes and constantly work to better the campus community as well as the world around them.

There is more to the University of San Diego than meets the eye. Behind the beautiful campus, the throngs of students and the activity of university life, lies a network of important organizations. There are multiple clubs and organizations here at USD that play a major role in the vitality of the university. Students become involved in a variety of clubs depending on their personal interests. The kinds of clubs at USD range from Associated Students to University Mini stry to the Alcala Club. Whether they are volunteering in surrounding communities, planning events for students on campus or working with Alumnae, students at USD are very committed to clubs and organizations. There is something for everyone here at the University of San Diego.
