PROFESSOR ROY L. BROOKS: A LEGACY OF JUSTICE, SCHOLARSHIP, AND HUMANITY

After 47 years at the University of San Diego School of Law, Warren Distinguished Professor of Law Professor Roy L. Brooks concludes an extraordinary career defined by groundbreaking scholarship, fearless inquiry, and deep compassion. His retirement marks the close of one of the most distinguished chapters in the school’s history and the beginning of a legacy that will continue to shape generations of students and scholars through the newly established Roy Brooks Fund for Social Justice.

Professor Brooks joined USD in 1979, recruited personally by then-Provost, Sister Sally Furay, who saw in him both a brilliant legal mind and a visionary educator. He became the first Black faculty member at the University, a milestone that transformed the community and deepened USD’s commitment to inclusion and academic excellence. Over the next five decades, Professor Brooks set a standard for what it means to be both a scholar and a servant of justice.
