USO LOOKING FoR RETURN TRIP To THE COLLEGE Cup TouRNAMENT

A new era officially begins for the USO women's soccer program as five-year assistant coach Ada Greenwood takes command of a Torero program he has helped qualify for NCAA Tournament play in each of the past four seasons. Greenwood fields an experienced San Diego squad loaded with talent in the form of nine returning starters. The senior leader– ship and established tradition of San Diego success, has the Toreros picked to finish fourth among the league's coaches in the 2003 preseason polls. The toughest challenge for San Diego lies in one of the nation's most difficult schedules. The 2003 slate for USO pits the Toreros against seven preseason NSCAA/ Adidas Top-25 programs. The Torero faithful will be privileged to most of the action as No. 1 Santa Clara, No. 5 UCLA, No .13 Pepperdine and No. 20 Clemson grace USO' s home schedule. If USO' s track record at home holds true, the visitors will have their hands full. The Toreros have a history of dominating visit– ing teams in Torero Stadium, posting a 41-14-3 overall record at home since 1997. Greenwood will field a team that returns a number of past let– ter-winners including all-conference senior defensive players Cristina Romero (Bonita, CA) and Alexis Obeji (Encinitas, CA).

The Torero defense should be one of the team's assets as standout junior Andrea Keesling (Thousand Oaks, CA) and all-Pac 10 transfer Kaitlyn Pruett figure to play major roles, complementing Obeji and Romero in the Torero backfield. USO' s defense is anchored by two proven goalkeepers. Sophomore Natalie Bobbitt (Rancho Bernardo, CA) stepped in and posted four shutouts and saved 40 shots in relief of starter Libby Bassett (Seattle, WA) who was sidelined by a mid-sea– son injury in 2002. San Diego welcomes back its entire offense, minus 12 points from gradu– ated senior Val Strocco. The USO at– tack outscored its opposition 40-28 a year ago-, registering 116 points en– route to winning 11 games, high– lighted by four matches of four plus goals.
