#18 Ranking, 14Wins Highlight 2001Season It was another banner year for the San Diego women 's soccer program in 2001 . The Toreros qualified for their third straight NCAATournament and set a school record with a 10-1 mark in Torero Stadium. USO jumped out of the gates win– ning their first five matches, and would finish the regular season winning nine of their last twelve . Fifth-year Head Coach John Cossaboon directed a team comprised of seven seniors and an accomplished mix of young players. The group of veteran play– ers , led by keeper Leila Duren and midfielder Gina Poltl put their mark on the 2001 season and on the San Diego program throughout their Torero careers. Senior teammates Stephanie Barnier and Casey Loveland supplied the bulk of USD's offense in 2001 for a team that earned national recognition and contin– ued to be one of the best teams on the West Coast. On October 25th the Toreros played host to the upstart Pepperdine Waves . Pepperdine came to San Diego ranked 20th in the nation and was looking to pass up San Diego as one of the top three teams in the conference. Late in the

USD's improved to 4-0 after Stephanie Barnier's overtime goal vs. Baylor

second half Pepperdine held a 2-1 advantage when the Toreros began a comeback. Midfielder Brooke Roby, a starter in 17 of San Diego's 21 games as a true freshman , scored from 20-yards out to even the match in the 7sth minute. Then moments later Poltl fired a shot past Wave goalie Lindsey Broullette, allowing San Diego a dramatic 3-2 win in front of 669 ecstatic fans at Torero Stadium. The victory improved USD's conference record to 4-1 and solidified the Toreros place among the league's best. Before USO entered conference play in October, the Toreros completed the early season schedule with wins over USC, Baylor and Arkansas . Stephanie Barnier's overtime goal against Baylor allowed the Toreros to start the season 4-0. Barnier, who scored a USO record 14 goals as a junior, also netted the game-winner against UC Santa Barbara in the season 's opener. After defeating Baylor, USO faced four consecutive PAC-10 opponents. On September 18 th the USC Women ofTroy came to San Diego and were turned away 1-0 thanks to sophomore Katie Allen. An unassisted breakaway goal by Allen was the difference, improving San Diego's record to 5-0 while earning a #18 national ranking . A pair of losses
