2001-02 SCHEDULE

The University of San Diego women's bas– ketball team, under the direction of 22 nd -year coach Kathy Marpe, enters the 2001-02 season with high aspirations. The Toreros return three starters and nine letter-winners from last season's team that fin– ished 10-16 overall and 5-9 in the WCC. Junior guard Kerri Nakamoto, the team's three-point specialist, highlights a talented group of Torero returnees. Nakamoto averaged 10.5 points a game last season and connected on a team-best 48 three pointers on her way to being selected Honorable Mention All-West Coast Conference. Senior Melissa Glazebrook, who will again lead the team at point guard, joins her in the backcourt. Glazebrook was named to the All– WCC Tournament team in 2000 and was instru– mental in helping the Toreros' capture the con– ference championship and earn San Diego the WCC's automatic bid into the NCAA's two sea– sons ago. Freshmen newcomers, guards Polly Dong and Brandi Collate, along with forward Cassidy Blaine, complete a recruiting class that Head Coach Kathy Marpe feels is going to make this year's team very competitive. "One thing that is really positive about this new season is the fresh– men class," says Head Coach Kathy Marpe.

"I think they should really raise the competitive level of our practices." The freshmen newcomers will complement the other key returning players that include junior forward Erin Malich, sopho– more forward Melissa Padgett and sophomore post player Marta Menuez. Marpe is excited about the senior leadership provided by Glazebrook, Janeene Arendsen and Robyn Fortney as well. "We have a great point guard in Melissa Glazebrook," added Marpe. "With seniors Janeene Arendsen and Robyn Fortney bringing their competitive nature to practice everyday, we should have great senior leadership."

Kathy Marpe is known as the "Dean" of the West Coast Conference. She enters her 29th season as a collegiate head coach and her 22nd season at San Diego, with two West Coast Con– ference Coach of the Year honors, I 02 WCC wins and 339 career victories.

San Diego will have to overcome the loss of both starting post players, leading scorer Amber Jansen and leading shot blocker Jamie Lucia. Last season Jansen poured in 15.8 points per game and averaged 7.2 rebounds. However, the loss of Jansen and Lucia present opportunities for talented young post players, such as sophomores Marta Menuez and Melissa Padgett, along with junior Erin Malich. With senior Melissa Glazebrook, an All-West Coast Tour– nament selection from 1999 returning at point guard, the Toreros are armed with veteran leadership in the backcourt. Glazebrook, who is one of the most feared defenders in the league, will share the backcourt with Nakamoto and Fortney. All three are legitimate threats from outside. Nakamoto shot 42% from three-point range last season and Fortney connected on 33% of her shots from behind the arc in 2000-01. The Toreros play on the road throughout the month of November with trips to Colorado and New York, before open– ing their home schedule with five consecutive games in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Following conference play, the University of San Diego will host the West Coast Conference Tournament in the Jenny Craig Pavilion for the second consecutive year. In the two seasons that the Toreros advanced into the NCAA's, 1993 and 2000, San Diego won the conference tourna– ment. The Toreros hope to accomplish that same feat on their home court in 2002.

Coach Marpe will begin her 29th year as a head coach and her 22nd season leading the University of San Diego women's basketball program. In her career Marpe has reached milestones aspiring coaches can

only dream of; 339 career coaching victories, 102West Coast Conference wins, two WCC coach of the year awards, two conference tournament championships and two NCAA Tour– nament teams. As a Torero, Marpe has coached 11 First Team All-West Coast Conference players, and more impor– tantly, 30 of Marpe's players have been honored as WCC Scholar Athletes. The changes Marpe has witnessed in the game of women's basketball with the skills and athleticism of today's student athletes, is nothing short of staggering. Success through change permeates Marpe's long and distinguished coaching career. Marpe's fourteen winning seasons and coach of the year honors in 1993 and 1998 attest to her ability to flourish in a changing athletic environment. Marpe's success comes as a result of embracing - not re– sisting change. Marpe will once again embrace change in 2001-02, hoping to duplicate the Torero success of recent past. Her 1999-2000 team matched a school record of 17 overall wins featuring future professional players Susie Erpelding and Jessica Gray. The 1999-2000 Toreros ran through the WCC Tournament, beating the number one seeded Pepperdine Waves 68-51. San Diego was awarded the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, becoming the second San Di– ego team Marpe would lead into the big dance. On February 3, 2001 Marpe became just the fourth coach in WCC history to reach 100 conference victories. By season's end and now entering the 2001-02 campaign, Marpe now owns 102 WCC wins, ranking her third all-time in WCC career coaching victories. Marpe's 339 overall career wins puts her in an elite class of about 60 NCAA coaches that have won over 300 games in a career. As the "dean" of West Coast Conference coaches, Marpe has twice been honored as the conference's coach of the year. She would win the award in 1998 after leading the 1997-98 Toreros to one of the largest single-season turn– arounds in WCC history - an improvement of eight games. It would be the second time Marpe would receive the honor.

In 1993 San Diego bounced back from a 4-1 O wee record the year before to fin– ish 8-6 and second in the conference standings. Not only was Marpe honored as Coach of the Year, but that team would earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the first in school history. Marpe's distinguished coaching ca– reer began in Minnesota at Spring Lake High School in 1971. Along with the duties of coaching women's basketball, Marpe coached the volleyball and softball teams as well, totaling an impressive 53-1 record in the combined three sports. The Minnesota native would find her– self in New Mexico two years later, coach– ing the New Mexico Lobos. Under Marpe's guidance, the Lobos would accumulate a 51-30 record in her final three seasons. Playing in "The Pit," the UNM women drew over 1,000 a game with crowds reaching the 2,000-3,000 mark on occasion- atten– dance figures unheard of in the mid-70's. After leaving the Albuquerque campus af– ter seven seasons, Marpe had led the Lo– bos to consecutive finishes in the Associ– ated Press Top 20 and had made six AIAW Regional appearances in seven years. Academic success and community in– volvement are values that Marpe encour– ages to student-athletes she coaches. Marpe feels that, "It is very important to remember who you are and where you come from, and also to give back to the people around you who are not so fortu– nate." Recently Coach Marpe won a Gold Medal for basketball in the over-50 Senior Olympic Games, held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She has also been a member of the gold medal winning East Coaching staff at the U.S. Olympic Festival.

6 University of San Diego Coaehing Staff ERIK JOHNSON 4th Season Assistant Erik Johnson begins his fourth season on San Diego's staff, brin9ing proven experi– ence as a recruiter, motivator and enthusias– tic teacher of the game. Erik serves as the defensive coordinator for the Toreros and coaches the wing players individually. Johnson shares the recruiting duties with Dawn Bake and plays a major role in practice planning and scout– ing. In Johnson's second season at USD, he helped the Toreros win theWest Coast Conference Tournament title and earn a birth into the 2000 NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Torero staff, Johnson spent four seasons at the University of Rhode Island-the last two as a first assistant un– der Head Coach Linda Ziemke. In addition to managing the bulk of the recruiting duties for the Rams, Johnson's primary coaching responsibilities at URI included developing post players, shoot– ing, defense and scouting. A native of San Jose, CA, Johnson was a four-year letter-winner

at UC San Diego, leading the Tritons to three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances including a Sweet-16. He served as captain and was the team's leading scorer as a senior completing his career as the all-time career and single-season three-point record holder. Johnson holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from UC San Diego (1994) and completed his Master's Degree in Adult Education at the University of Rhode Island (1997). Johnson and wife Laura Davis, who was a member of the USA NationalVolleyball team for five years, currently reside in Mira Mesa. -- DAWN BAKER 1st Season Assistant

Dawn Baker comes to Alcala Park as a first-year assistant under Torero Head Coach Kathy Marpe. No stranger to theWest Coast Conference, Baker's playing and coaching career now includes three WCC schools. Dawn coaches the Torero post players and assists Coach Marpe with the USD of–

fense. Baker joins Erik Johnson to coordinate recruiting efforts and plays a major role in scouting and practice planning. Baker was an All-WCC Player at the University of San Fran– cisco in 1994 and was twice named the WCC Player of the Week during her two years as a Don. From 1995-2000, Baker served as an assistant coach and was the recruiting coordinator at the University of Portland. She coached a Pilot team to an undefeatedWCC record of 14-0 and an overall mark of 27-3 in 1997. Most recently Baker served as the Head Coach of the Leipzig Eagles, a semi-pro team in Leipzig Germany. Under

Baker's direction, the Eagles advanced into the country's Elite Eight, in the Pokal National Tour– nament. Baker took the Eagles from the third division level into division two, after just one season. Baker was honored with the Charles L. Harney award given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA, graduating Magna Cum Laude from San Francisco in 1994.

SHELLEY SHEETZ 1st Season Assistant

Shelley Sheetz brings All-American honors and professional playing experi– ence to the Torero staff as a first-year as– sistant under Head Coach Kathy Marpe. Shelley coaches the USD point guards and plays a major role in recruiting, scout- ing and practice planning.

\ Playing college basketball at Colorado, ------– Sheetz was named a Kodak All-American in 1995 . In that same season, Sheetz guided the Buffalos to a 25 game winning-streak and her team would finish 14-0 in Big Eight Conference play. After Sheetz took Colorado to the Elite Eight for the second time in her college career, the conference would name her as the Female Athlete of the Year in 1995. Sheetz was a Naismith Award Finalist, given to the best college basketball player in the nation, and the state of Colorado would honor her as the SportsWoman of theYear in 1993 and 1995.When her career at Colorado finished, Sheetz would own the all-time record for three-point baskets made in Big Eight Conference history. As a professional player, Sheetz first played in Wuppertal, Germany. When the American Basketball League was formed in 1996, Sheetz was signed to play for the Colorado Xplosion. After two seasons playing in Colorado, Sheetz was signed to play in Portland for the ABL's Portland Power. Sheetz began her coaching career in the Northwest, as an assistant atWashington State University. With the Cougars, Sheetz coached the guards, recruited nationally and was re– sponsible for overseeing the Lil' Dribblers camp and clinic programs. Originally from Ce– dar Rapids, Iowa, Sheetz was elected into the Iowa High School Hall of Fame in 1996.

Tracy Schneider A seni or, who is an integral part of the Torero program. Tracy is in her fourth season working in the women's basketball office. She assists the coaching staff with recruiting mailings and database organization. Tracy also helps to coordi– nate film exchange for scouting of opponents. A Media Communications Major, Tracy went to Seattle Prep High School in Seattle, WA. Plans to pursue a career in athletics when she graduates in May.

Jacquelyn Hontalas

A freshman who completed a standout high school career at St. Ignatius high school in San Francisco. Jacquelyn played AAU basketball with Polly Dong. Assists the coaches in all aspects of practice set-up and organization. Jacquelyn is a trustee scholar who chose to attend USD for the academic reputation and great atmosphere.

Noelle Jewell A freshman beginning her first season with the San Diego women's basketball program. Noelle played high school basketball at The Bishop's School in La Jolla before two knee surgeries ended her career. Assists the coaches with prac– tice set-up and organization. Noelle is an international relations major who loves to surf.
