Coach Marpe w ill beg in her 28th year as a co ll egiate head coach and her 2 1st patrolling the sidelines for the Uni– vers ity of San Diego. In her 20 years at USO, she has won two West Coast Conference Coach of the Year honors, two WCC Tournament Champ ionships and made two appea r–

ances in the NCAA Tournament. The changes she has witnessed in the game of women 's basketball and the sk ill s and athleticism of today 's student-athl etes, is nothing short of staggering. Adapti ng to the changing environment is key to building a winning program. Success through change permeates Marpe's long and d isti ngu ished coaching career and, her 329 career victories attest to her ab ility to flourish in a changing environment. Despite the myriad of changes in women 's college basketball and the ever-increasing sk ills of the student-athl etes who play them, Marpe 's success comes as a result of em– bracing - not resisting change. Her versatil ity was proven in I999-00 when the Toreros earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament and a West Coast Conference Tournament Championship. Marpe reli ed on the leadership of three seniors and the consistent p lay of two young guards to lead the 1999-00 Torero squad to their second trip to the NCAA Tournament in schoo l hi story. Uni vers ity of San Diego head women 's basketbal I coach Kathy Marpe joined an elite group of coaches in the I998-99 season when the Toreros downed Portland State Un iversity, for her elusive 300th career co ll egiate coaching victory. With the wi n, Marpe j o ins a se lect group of about 60 active coaches who have surpassed the 300 ca reer victory plateau. The eigh t victory improve– ment was one of the bi ggest single season turnarounds in league history, and earned Marpe her second WCC Coach of the Year honor - a lso w inning the award 111 1993.
