All three teams made appearances in the nati onal poll s with US O and LM U bo th winning fir st-ro und NCAA matches. Those three ap pea r aga in in th e US A Today/AVCA 's 1998 Pre-Season Top-25. Hi sto ri ca ll y. fi ve membe r teams have ea rn ed nati onal rankings . including. Gonzaga. Loyo la Ma rymount. Pepperdine. San Di ego and Santa Clara. and each of those have adva nced to pos t-seaso n pl ay. Voll ey ball is one of 13 spo rt s th e 46-yea r-o ld confe rence sponso rs. Started in 1952 as a men' s bas ketb all league fo r fi ve Bay Area sc hoo ls, th e WCC added women's athl eti cs to its line-up in 1985. Five current members (Loyo la Marymount , Pepperdin e, San Di ego , San Francisco and Santa Clara ) chartered th e vo ll ey ball league along with two assoc iates, US Inte rn ati onal and Nevada-Reno. The latter pair departed in 1987 when th e ali gnment grew to it s current confi gurati on to include Gonzaga, Po rtl and and Saint Mary's , all of whi ch we re elev ated from NAIA statu s.
