TOREROSDEFINED...

The University of San Diego, which sponsors sixteen NCAA Division I intercollegiate teams, competes under the athletic nickname 'Tore– ros: In 1961, the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the founding father of USD, announced that t he school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping wit h the friendly relationship wh ich exists between San Diego and Mexico;' His Excel– lency said at the t ime. Torero comes from the Spanish term 'Toro; t he bull, and from the word 'Torear; to fight bulls. Al l of the contestants in the ring are ca lled 'Toreros: Torero is a general term descri bing a bullfighter and signifies cou rage, honor and fidelity. USD student– athletes, like the Torero, represent a willingness to stand alone in the ring and accept the cha llenge.The 2005-06 school yea r marks the 45 th season with Toreros as the official nickname for USD athletic teams.
