THE CITY...

San Diego is truly "America's Finest City:' A modern metropolis (second largest in California) and a popular year-round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, canyons and valleys. San Diego also surrounds one of California's greatest natural harbors which has been a dominant factor in determining the city's history, economy and development. Meteorologists claim San Diego as the country's only area with perfect climate. This ideal year-round environment posts an average daytime temperature of 70 degrees, with an annual rainfall average of less than 10 inches. Most days are sunny, with humidity generally low, even in the summer. The climate, attractive setting and recreational facilities make San Diego "America's Finest City:'

The city has mostly avoided the evils of urban sprawl, which has allowed its downtown to remain vibrant, especially the Gaslamp Quarter. San Diego is also home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo as well as Sea World. The city is great for families, but for those without kids, there is a lot to do as well. San Diego is home to a number of military bases, primarily due to its location. In 1941, after the Pearl Harbor attacks, the U.S. established the headquarters of the Pacific Fleet in San Diego, and the city is now home to the largest air naval station on the west coast.

that San Diego is the nation's sixth-largest city, it just retains a small town feel.

Accord ing to Sports Illustrated, "For sheer numbers of participants, diversity of pursuits of involvement, San Diego must rank as the sports fitness capital of the U.S:' Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sa il, swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, wind-surf on 70 miles of public beach or golf at any of the over 80 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1,158-acre recreation and cultural center, offers 25 tennis courts, two gymnasiums, two municipal golf courses, and one of the nation's finest zoos. Mission Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing, bicycling, tennis, golf, jet skiing and kite flying. As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports their professional teams -- the NFL Chargers play at Qualcomm Stadium, and the San Diego Padres play at Petco Park. During college football bowl week, San Diego annually hoststhe San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl and the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl in

late December. During 1998, Qual– comm Stadium hosted the Super Bowl game between Denver and Green Bay; followed by the World Series between the San Diego Pa– dres and the NewYork Yankees. The Super Bowl returned to San Diego in 2003. Whatever sporting activity there is, it's here in San Diego -- the sports capital of the U.S.!

THE CAMPUS... The University of San Diego is an independent Catho– lic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Hena– res. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's architectural style.

ciety of the Sacred Heart and Bishop Charles Francis Buddy of the Diocese of San Diego, the University of San Diego began as separate colleges for men and women. The first classes met in 1952; the School of Law opened its doors in 1954. By the late 1960's it became clear that both colleges would benefit from combining academic resources, and in 1972 the University of San Diego became a single coeducational Catholic university. Now governed by a board of trustees independent from the founding organizations, USD is a Ro– man Catholic institution that welcomes students, faculty and staff of diverse religions, traditions and remains dedicated to the values originally articulated by Mother Hill and Bishop Buddy. Students choose from more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degrees programs in academic divisions including the College of Arts and Sciences and the schools of Business Administration, Leadership and Education Sciences, Law and Nursing and Health Science.

The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country,

featuring major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USD has completed numer– ous major construction and expansion projects. In 2000 the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a 5, 100-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to USD basketball and volleyball. The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice opened on the west end of campus, and in 2003 the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology opened. A five-story Spanish Renaissance parking garage (1,100 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the45,000 square foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories.

THE ACADEMICS... USO enrolls more than 7,600 students who have a choice of more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Admission to USO, which consistently ranks among the top schools in the nation, is highly selective. USO received more than 7,800 applications for approximately 1,100 undergraduate openings in Fall of 2005. The class of 2009 entered with a GPA of 3.74 and an average SAT score of 1176. USO has earned recognition in such publications as the 2006 edi- tion of The Princeton Review annual college guide as being one of

the best colleges in the United States. The Princeton Review recently included USO as one of the nation's most socially conscious institutions in its book, Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. USO in 2003, joined the elite company of Phi Beta Kappa, the nations oldest honor society. Nationwide, only about 10 percent of all colleges and universities have Phi Beta Kappa chapters. USO was granted membership to the Mortar Board National Honor Society in 2000. USD Student-Athlete Academic Support

The USO Athletic Academic Support Program is designed to promote the academic development of student-athletes. The primary objective is to offer the necessary re– sources for the academic success of student-athletes as they work to earn their degree. Academic Support Services are designed to enhance the student-athlete's overall collegiate experience and encourage development and attainment of academic and career goals. All USO student-athletes have access to advising, tutoring and mentoring services. The mentoring program, Torero Blue and MenTorero, were redeveloped in 2005 and team a graduate student in the counseling program with an athlete who would like to enhance study skills, learn about campus resources, receive guidance on goal development and attainment, and benefit from guided group study. Student-athletes also have access to a quiet area where they can study or work in the computer center. In addition, student-athletes are encour– aged to utilize the campus learning centers including the Writing, Math and Logic Centers as well as to take advantage of the resources available to them in the Career Center, Counseling Center and Computer Labs. Sarabeth Pollock is in her fourth year as the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Support for the University of San Diego. She has worked as a tutor in the Athletic Department since the fall of 2001 . She serves as the academic advisor for all sports except Football and Rowing. Her responsibilities include the supervision of the Study Hall and the administration of the tutoring and mentoring programs. Currently, the Academic Support Program employs over 25 tutors who represent a variety of majors across campus, as well as over 12 mentors who are graduate students pursuing their masters degrees in USD's Counseling Program. The Study Hall and computer lab are open for student-athlete use all year long; during these- mester they are open 60 hours per week and provide a quiet, studious atmosphere to foster academic excellence. STUDENT LIFE... St udent life at the University of San Diego is coordinated through Associated Students, the student-composed gov– erning body of the university. This group of students creates most of the events on campus inc luding dances, barbecues, and special guest speakers, such as Saturday Night Live co– median Horatio Sanz. Off-campus excursions have also been sponsored by AS, such as trips to see the Harlem Globetrot– ters perform at the San Diego Sports Arena and bus trips to Disneyland and the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Through the Office of University Ministry, the strong Catholic tradition of USD is manifested through the student body. UM provides the campus with opportunities to attend and participate in weekly Mass and offers retreats throughout

the semeste r. Service projects such as Tijuana Spring Breakthrough, a house building project in Tijuana and Baja California, give students the chance to get involved in providing assistance to those less fort unate. UM also sponsors outreach programs, both on campus and in the local Linda Vista community, including tutoring and mentoring.

through fitness classes, such as yoga, kickboxing, and aerobics, and through extracurricular classes, including ballroom dancing and massage. Classes in sailing, surfing and scuba diving allow students to get outside in the beautiful San Diego weather and learn new activities. The intramural program is an integral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the USD community partaking in intramural sports. Sports range from the widely known flag football, basketball, and volleyball to the lesser-known, yet still widely popular, ultimate frisbee and dodgeball.

The University of San Diego softball team is gearing up for the 2008 season after a record-breaking 2007 season. The graduating class last season leaves after a successful season as the incoming senior class steps up ready to take over the leadership of the team. Coach McElvain and her staff have also brought in another strong class of freshmen as well as picking up some transfers along the way. The 2007 season ended with a number of records broken and indi– viduals entering season and career top-10 categories. San Diego recorded 24 overall wins, the most since 2000, while tallying 20 wins against Division I opponents. As a team USD rocked 15 homeruns from eight different players, a new program record. They tallied 361 team hits (Most since 2000) and 190 runs scored (Most since 1999). The pitching staff racked up 259 K's (Most since 1999) and three pitchers entered theTop 11 USD single season strike out record list. The team also was awarded five PCSC All Conference honors, four Commissioner's Honor Roll awards, the PCSC co-Freshman of the Year, and Coach Mac's 100th career victory. The 2008 senior leadership is strong this season. Nichole Valenzuela, Kath– leen Bonja, Stacy Compton, and Celine Pujol will all work together to continue the rising success of the USD softball program. This season, Kathleen Bonja and Nichole Valenzuela have been named team captains. At third base is Kathleen Bonja who was an All PCSC FirstTeam recipi– ent. She had a .327 batting average with 20 RBI, eight doubles, and two homeruns. A young but strong pitching staff w ill take over the circle this season . Newly appointed pitching coach Stayc Preator is working with the pitchers bringing experience from the Mid– west. Co-Freshman of the year and PCSC All-Academic pitcher Jennifer Ellenbeck returns for her second sea– son after finishing with a 3.64 ERA and recording 76 strike outs in 100 innings of work. Sophomore lefty Jessi Waers will return with some experience from 2007. JC transfer Alyssa Luna,

freshman Kristen Gensler, and junior Lindsey Fleet are also expected to contribute to the pitching staff when called upon. Senior catcher Stacy Compton will take the lead sending the signs from behind the plate. She finished last sea– son with 18 hits and four runs scored including a double. Around the infield for San Diego will be Kathleen Bonja at third base and sophomore Carey Casciola at shortstop to cover the left side, a pair that represents disciplined precision against opponents . On the right side, the Toreros have many options starting with junior Lindsey Fleet at first base. Freshman Megan Walsh is also expected to contribute later this season . Filling second base will be freshman Celeste Soto. Contributing to second base will also be Celine Pujol and Danielle Duhart throughout the season. In centerfield will be senior Nichole Valenzuela. A solid defensive player, she also was an All PCSC second team recipient who batted .312, had 30 runs scored on 54 hits, recorded 13 doubles and two triples. Sharing time in the outfield will be junior Kaslin Tucker and sophomore Danielle Duhart, Keely Helbock and Alexa Baldino. New to the outfield staff and contributing throughout the season when called upon will be sophomore Taylor Law– rence, freshmen Kristen Gensler, Alyssa Schott, and Taryn Keenan . The Toreros gear up for a challeng– ing season ahead. USD will face four preseason Top-25 teams this season including Arizona State, Stanford, University of Oregon, and UCLA. USD will face teams from 13 different states (Illinois, Colorado, West Virginia, Ne– vada, Michigan, Oregon, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Utah,Texas, Iowa, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania). San Diego has also scheduled six different tour– naments, four of which are at home. Two of the four home tournaments will be co-hosted with San Diego State this year. The Toreros will open up their 2008 season on February 8 in a single game against No. 17 ranked Stanford at the USD Softball Complex.

Since the 2005-06 season, McElvain and the team have upheld a 1 OOo/o NCAA academic progress rating. In 2007... Coach "Mac" has made huge strides as she guided the Toreros to a record setting 2007 season. The graduating class last season (Virginia Fritsch, Christina Haake, Alicia Massei, Dani– elle Treiber) tied or set new records in 12 different single season or career categories. The 2008 senior class is set to leave their mark by the end of the new season. As a team San Diego accomplished 20 divi~ sion one wins. They also recorded 24 overall wins, the most since the 2000 season. Coach McElvain also hit the century mark with her 100th career victory as head coach at USD on April 16th in an extra-inning vic– tory over Santa Clara.

The 2006 season was more proof that the USD softball program is turning the corner and transform– ing the team into a competitive Division I program that could battle for that sought after bid to post sea- son thanks to the efforts of Coach McElvain. In 2006, San Diego cap- tu red 22 wins for the first time since 2001 . That year, USD also accom- plished 18 division one wins. The Toreros also posted ten conference wins, the most in McElvain's history as the skipper for San Diego. In 2005... Kim Aggabao begins her fourth season on the Torero staff. As the first assistant, Aggabao primarily works with the infield and hitting. She also assists with recruiting and will take on the role of Camp Coordinator. Aggabao also contributes to the team's fundraising efforts. This past Fall she helped organize the program's Inaugural GolfTournament. Aggabao comes to USD from UC San Diego, where she graduated in 2004 as a Biology major with a minor in Sociology. She was a four-year starter as a middle infielder for the Triton softball team and was named team captain both her junior and senior year Aggabao was also named first-team All California Collegiate Athletic Association three times, and was the CCAA Most Valuable Player her senior season after leading the league with a .411 batting average, second-best in school history. She was also named to the All-West Region Second Team. Aggabao finished her career at UCSD hitting .312 and ranks in the top six all– time in six different categories. She also set the Triton record for most doubles in a season with 23. Off the field, Aggabao was a representative in the Triton Athletes Council, an organization that serves as a forum aiming to improve the quality of student-athletes' collegiate experience. Originally from Walnut, California, she is the daughter ofTony and Dolly Aggabao. She also has one older brother, Anthony (29), and a younger sister, Tricia (21 ), who is a senior on the Stanford softball team. ( FRANCESCA RAMOS J Francesca Ramos stepped up her role from player to volunteer coach for theToreros in 2006. A graduate of USD in May 2005, she majored in Sociology and minored in Leadership & American Humanics. Ramos graduated with her Masters in Leadership Studies in January 2008 from USD as well. She finished with a career 110 appearances with 69 starts, 127 at bats and 18 runs for San Diego. A loca l from San Diego, she works mainly w ith the outfield and was responsible for developing an extensive throwing improvement program for the athletes she is responsible for. Ramos attended Point Loma High School where she played four years of varsity softball and she played for American Pastime 18 Gold for her travel ball career. Currently, Ramos is working for the Department of Defense, Department Of Navy Region Southwest Human ResourcesOffice located on Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI). As a Personnel Management Advisor, Ramos is responsible for providing advisory services for the Federal Civilian workforce as well as assistance on the processes and procedures in the fields of recruitment, performance management, Equal Employment Opportunity and employee and labor relations.

( STAYC PREATOR ) Stayc Preator comes to USD from the Midwest where she coached in 2004, serving as pitching coach for two seasons at Middle Tennessee State University, her alma mater. The El Cajon, California native set a school record at Middle Tennessee in 2003 by pitching 59.2 consecutive scoreless innings. She

also holds the MTSU record for consecutive innings without allow ing a walk (42.1 ), and was the first Lady Raider to throw a perfect game. She was All-Sun Belt Conference in 2003 and ended her career with 61 victoriesand a 1.61 earned run average. Preator led the 2000 Lady Raiders to their first NCAATournament appearance, winning the Ohio Valley Conference championship game over Southeast Missouri with 10 strikeouts. Preator then moved to University of Evansville w here she was the pitching coach in 2005-2006. Currently she works as an insurance agent here in San Diego. She also enjoys coaching private pitching lessons in Scripps Ranch.
