THE CITY...

San Diego is truly "America's Finest City." A modern me– tropolis (second largest in California) and a popular year– round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, canyons and valleys. San Diego also surrounds one of California's greatest natural harbors which has been a dominant factor in determining the city's history, economy and development.

Meteorologists claim San Diego as the country's only area with perfect climate. This ideal year-round environment posts an average daytime temperature of 70 degrees, with an annual rainfall average of less than 10 inches. Most days are sunny, with humidity generally low, even in the summer. The climate, attractive setting and recreational facilities make San Diego "America's Finest City."

The city has mostly avoided the evils of urban sprawl, which has allowed its downtown to remain vibrant, espe– cially the Gaslamp Quarter. San Diego is also home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo as well as Sea World. The city is great for families , but for those without kids, there is a lot to do as well. San Diego is home to a number of military bases , primarily due to its location . In 1941 , after the Pearl Harbor attacks , the U.S. established the headquarters of the Pacific Fleet in San Diego, and the city is now home to the largest air naval station on the west coast.

Petco Park - Home of the Padres Unlike many cities , San Diego 's airport is right next to downtown , increasing its convenience even more. It is hard to believe that San Diego is the nation 's sixth-largest city, it just retains a small town feel. According to Sports Illustrated , "For sheer numbers of participants, diversity of pursuits of involvement, San Diego must rank as the sports fitness capital of the U.S." Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sail , swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, wind-surf on 70 miles of public beach or golf at any of the over 80 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1, 158-acre recreation and cultural center, offers 25 tennis courts, two gymnasiums , two municipal golf courses, and one of the nation 's finest zoos . Mission Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing, bicycling, tennis, golf, jet skiing and kite flying.

As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports their professional teams -- the NFL Chargers play at Qualcomm Stadium, and the San Diego Padres play at Petco Park. During college football bowl week, San Diego annually hosts the San Diego County Credit Union Poinset– tia Bowl and the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl in late December. During 1998, Qualcomm Stadium hosted the Super Bowl game between Denver and Green Bay; followed by the World Series between the San Diego Padres and the New York Yankees. The Super Bowl returned to San Diego in 2003. Whatever sporting activity there is , it's here in San Diego -- the sports capital of the U.S.!

THE CAMPUS ... The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education . Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid -Alcala de Henares. Found– ed by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Chris– tians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's architectural style.

Under the leadership of Mother Rosalie Hill of the So- ciety of the Sacred Heart and Bishop Charles Francis Joan Kroc Peace & Ju st ice Center Buddy of the Diocese of San Diego, the University of San Diego began as separate colleges for men and women. The first classes met in 1952; the School of Law opened its doors in 1954. By the late 1960's it became clear that both colleges would benefit from combining academic resources, and in 1972 the University of San Diego became a single coeducational Catholic university. Now governed by a board of trustees independent from the founding organizations, USO is a Roman Catholic institution that welcomes students, faculty and staff of diverse religions, traditions and remains dedicated to the values originally articulated by Mother Hill and Bishop Buddy. Students choose from more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degrees programs in academic divisions including the College of Arts and Sciences and the schools of Business Administration, Leadership and Education Sciences, Law and Nursing and Health Science.

The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring major buildings designed in an or– namental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style . Since 1984, USO has completed numerous major construction and expansion projects . In 2000 the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a 5,100-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to USO basketball and volleyball. Two years ago, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice opened on the west end of campus, and in 2003 the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology opened . A five-story Spanish Renaissance parking garage (1,100 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped foun– tain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the

university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall, which in– cludes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories.

THE ACADEMICS ... USO enrolls more than 7,600 students who have a choice of more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs . Admission to USO, whi ch consistently ranks among the top schools in the nation, is highly selective . USO received more than 7,800 applications for approximately 1,100 under– graduate openings in Fall of 2005 . The class of 2009 entered with a GPA of 3.74 and an average SAT score of 1176. USO has earned recogn ition in such publications as the 2006 edition of The Princeton Review annual college guide as being one of the best colleges in the United States. The Princeton Review recently included USO as one of the nation's most socially conscious institutions in its book, Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement.

STUDENT LIFE ... Student life at the University of San Diego is coordinated through Associated Students , the student-composed governing body of the university. This group of students creates most of the events on campus including dances, barbecues , and special guest speakers, such as Sat– urday Night Live comedian Horatio Sanz. Off-campus excursions have also been sponsored by AS, such as trips to see the Harlem Globetrotters perform at the San Diego Sports Arena and bus trips to Disneyland and the Getty Center in Los Angeles . Through the Office of University Ministry, the strong Catholic tradition of USO is manifested through the student body. UM provides the campus with opportuni– ties to attend and participate in weekly Mass and offers

retreats throughout the semester. Service projects such as Tijuana Spring Breakthrough, a house building project in Tijuana and Baja California , give students the chance to get involved in providing

assistance to those less fortunate . UM also sponsors outreach programs , both on campus and in the local Linda Vista community, including tutoring and mentoring. Campus Recreation offers students a way to destress through fitness classes, such as yoga , kickboxing , and aerobics, and through extracur– ricular classes , including ballroom dancing and massage. Classes in sailing , surfing and scuba r':'-Jfl-- diving allow students to get outside in the beauti– - - ful San Diego weather and learn new activities. The intramural program is an integral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the USO community partaking in intramural sports.

Students cheering on the basketball team Sports range from the widely known flag football , basketball, and volleyball to the lesser-known , yet still widely popular, ultimate frisbee and dodgeball. Assistant Coaches:

Underclassmen and Veterans Bring Balance, As USD Reloads for 2007 Entering her sixth season as the skipper of the USO softball team, Melissa McElvain and her staff reached a number of milestones in 2006 and look to better those in 2007. The Toreros have four seniors the team will look to for leadership and direction. Not to mention a strong incoming recruiting class consisting of seven outstanding freshmen , a recipe for success. "I am pleased to have our four seniors [Alicia Massei, Christina Haake, Danielle Treiber, and Virginia Fritsch] as team captains," commented head coach Melissa McElvain . "These individuals have a tremendous work ethic, amazing attitudes, great teamwork and excellent leadership. I am excited to see them lead this team to a successful 2007 season ." The Toreros are looking to build upon the record setting season in 2006, which include 18 Division I wins and ten conference victories. The current seniors hope to jump in confer– ence and compete for the automatic bid to the post season. The Toreros have consecutively improved their overall record the past three years as well as their conference mark since the PCSC began in 2003. Senior Christina Haake finished last season with 2.49 ERA during conference play, pitching four complete games in 29 overall appearances. She recorded two saves in 120.1 innings of work posting 73 strikeouts. Virginia Fritsch returns healthy and ready for the season after battling injury last season . A crucial part of the line up, Fritsch will play a key role behind the plate. She finished last season with 34 starts, hitting .286, posting 14 runs, 20 RBI , and two homeruns. Danielle Treiber is slated to work the infield at second base for USO. Treiber was a key part of the Toreros offense, coming up with base hits at important times during the season . Hitting .266 last season in 23 appearances, she finished with eight runs scored, 11 RBI, and two homeruns. Alicia Massei enters the 2007 season ready to take the field for her final season at first base. Massei fought her way back through injury last season having finished with a .222 batting aver– age in her 35 appearances. She had seven runs scored, 13 RBI and one homerun. The 2007 opponents will step into the box facing some new hurlers in the circle this season . In addition to senior pitcher, Christina Haake, the Toreros gain three new arms from the pitching rubber. Sophomore Katie Jo Nelson transferred to USO after one year at Fresno State. Two freshmen, right-handed pitcher Jennifer Ellenbeck (Poway, California) and left-handed pitcher Jessi Waers (Simi Valley, California) complete the 2007 pitching staff. Beside catcher Virginia Fritsch, will be junior Stacy Compton and freshman Coley Woyak behind the plate. Rounding out the infield include senior Alicia Massei covering first base, senior Danielle Treiber will cover second base, and junior Kathleen Bonja will cover third base. Returning veterans contributing to the infield include juniors Celine Pujol and Stacy Compton , and sophomore Emily Passovoy. Freshman Carey Casciola helping out at shortstop, as well as freshmen transfers Danielle Duhart and Alexa Baldino may find themselves contributing to the middle infield this season . Junior Nichole Valenzuela returns with her rocket arm and will most likely post up in centerfield. Sophomore Katie Burk is likely to cover the area in left field . Also contributing to a solid outfield line-up in a supporting role include sophomores Kaslin Tucker, Kim Milkovich and freshmen Keely Helbock, Danielle Duhart and Alexa Baldino. Prior to the start of conference on March 31 against Loyola Marymount, the Toreros will have to pass the gauntlet of pre-season ball consisting of 30 games; 15 home games and 15 road

games. Besides their tournament on March 2-4, San Diego will participate in two tourna–

ments; one at UC Riverside and the other at cross-town rival San Diego State. "Our pre-conference schedule is very challenging and will prepare us to compete for the PCSC title and a post season bid," comments McElvain. "Our schedule is also very geo– graphically diverse, fielding teams from ten different states: California, Rhode Island, Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Oregon , New York, Colorado, North Dakota, and Connecticut." Coach McElvain is personally very excited about USD's trip to Stillwater, Oklahoma for a three game series against Oklahoma State, her alma mater. "It will be exciting to coach against the team I played for and show my team where my rural college experience took place," joked McElvain . The Torero's conference opener is on the road on March 31 against Loyola Marymount.

Since the 2005-06 season, McElvain and the team ---------- N have upheld a 100% NCAA academic progress rating. The 2006 season is proof that the USO softball program is turning the corner and transforming the team into a competitive Division I program that could battle for that sought after bid to post season thanks to the efforts of Coach McElvain. Last season San Diego captured 22 wins for the first time in five seasons. They also accomplished 18 division one wins , the most in the program's history. The Toreros also posted ten conference wins, the most in McElvain 's history as the skipper for San Diego. In 2005, McElvain's season was highlighted by the pro–

gram's first ever victory over cross-town rival San Diego State, defeating the Aztecs 2-0 in an extraordinary extra inning game. Another first was the four-game sweep of conference opponent, St. Mary's on April 2-3. McElvain was also instrumental in the Toreros joining the Pacific Coast Softball Conference in 2003. In her time at San Diego, she led the Toreros to two upsets over opponents ranked in the top 25. USO defeated 10th ranked Cal State Fullerton in 2002 and 20th ranked Oregon State in 2003. A 1999 graduate of Oklahoma State, McElvain (formerly Turley) earned All-Big XII honors while playing catcher and second base. She ranks in the Top 20 all-time at OSU in several catego– ries, including games played , hits, total bases, doubles , RBI and

stolen bases . McElvain led the Cowgirls to three post-season appearances and a third place finish in the 1998 Women's College World Series . While at Oklahoma State, she earned All-Big XII academic honors while attaining a Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Marketing. Additionally, she earned the OSU Community Service Contribution Award (1997-98); the NCAA Leadership Award (1998); and was a four-year SAAC Representative, serving as SAAC President in her senior year. More recently, McElvain completed her Master's Degree in Leadership Studies in 2006 from the University of San Diego. No stranger to the USO Athletic Department, prior to her

appointment as softball coach she was Assistant Sports Informa– tion Director for a year-and-a-half. A native San Diegan, McElvain attended nearby Patrick Henry HS. Melissa, her husband Ryan and their daughter Mia reside in San Carlos.
