In 1961 , the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the founding father of USD, announced that the school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping with the fri endly relationship whi ch exi sts between San Di ego and Mexico," Hi s Excell ency said at the time. Torero comes from the spani sh term toro , the bull, and from the word torear, to fig ht bulls. All of the contestants in the ring are ca lled toreros. Torero is a general term describing a bullfi ghter and signifi es courage, honor and fidelity. USD student-athletes, like the Torero , represent a willing– ness to stand alone in the ring and accept the challenge. The 2000-2001 schoo l year marked the 40th anniversary with Toreros as the offi cial nickn ame for USD athletic teams. What Is A Torero?
