MELISSA McELVAIN, Head Coach

1st Season

Melissa McElvain enters her first year as USD 's Head Softball Coach. A 1999 graduate of Oklahoma State, she earned All-Big Xll honors whi le playing catcher and second base . McElva in (Turley) led the Cowgirls to three post-season appearances and a th ird place fini sh in the 1998 Women 's College World Series. Wh ile at Oklahoma State, she earned All -Big Xll academic honors while attaining a Busi– ness Administration degree with an emphasis in Marketing. Additionally, she earned the OSU Community Service Contribution Award (1997-98) ; the NCAA Leadership Award ( 1998) ; and was a four-year SAAC Representative, including being the SAAC President her senior campaign. McElva in gained international experi ence while playing for the California Hurricanes in 1996 . She trav–

elled to Vancouver, Canada to compete versus Olympic teams such as Canada, Cuba , Italy and China. No stranger to USO, the past year-and-a-half she was employed by the USO athletic department as Assistant Sports Information Director. A native San Diegan, McElvain attended nearby Patrick Henry High School. Re– cently married on June 30, 2001 , Melissa and Ryan reside in San Diego.

CHRIS De MARCO, Assistant Coach 1st Season Chri s enters his first season on the Torero staff as an assistant. He has been actively involved in the San Diego community in many ways with a major emphas is on coaching. The past ten years he has been involved with coaching girls competiti ve softba ll. He has managed and coached hundreds of girls at every level, wi th many realizing All-Star status, both at Regional and National levels. His experience included ex tensive Trave l team play and tournament play. Accompli shed in the fi ner needs of Pitchers, he has also maintained an overall view of team managemen t, and offens ive and defensive strategies. An athlete and sports fanatic, hi s hobbies include vintage cars and motorcycles. A San Carl os resident, Chri s has two daughters that are both active in sports and academics. A 1984 graduate of Southern Illinois University (Marketing & Management), Chris relocated to San Diego in 1985 from Chicago. Co-owner of a Property management company that has been providing housi ng needs since 1972, he is committed to continuing to service the San Diego housing needs.

KELLYWARNER, Assistant Coach 1st Season Kelly begins her first year on the Torero staff where she will work closely with the pitchers. A 200 I graduate of Utah State Univers ity, Kell y earned her degree in Physical Education and Hea lth. Whi le at Utah State, Kelly was nominated as Student Teacher of the Year. She played softball for four years and led the Big West Confe rence in pitching for game appearances and games finished during her sen ior year. During her freshman year she led all frosh in games played. Prior to attending Utah State, Kelly made a name for herself in the spo1i of softball right here in San Diego. She prepped at Mt. Carmel High School where she was named All -CIF First Team, All -Divis ion I First Team, and Palomar Pl ayer-of-the-Year. In the classroom she was a four-time member of the Academic Honor Roll.
