2007 SEASON PREVIEW
TOREROS LOOK TO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS The USO men's tennis team will head into the 2007 spring schedule with hopes of continuing their successful ways. Under the guidance of 11th-year head coach Tom Hagedorn, the Toreros have posted winning seasons the past ten years, and have reached the NCAA Tournament a school-best four straight years. The 2007 USO Toreros have a preseason team ranking of 42nd in the nation. Gone from last year's 15-7 club that turned in a final ITA ranking of 37th in the nation include the team's top three singles performers - Pierrick Ysern, Oscar Plotnik and Mirza Koristovic. Ysern , the 2005 NCAA National Runner-up, finished ranked 30th in the nation his senior year and compiled a 16-4 record at No. 1 singles. Plotnik and Koristovic split duties between No. 2 and No. 3 singles . Coach Hagedorn will look for his upperclassemen to provide this year's squad with both leadership and experience. USD's two seniors include Jonas Mouly (Paris , France) and Matt Ozurovich (Mission Viejo, CA). Mouly will be planted in the upper half of the singles ladder, while Ozurovich should give USO asolid punch at either No. 5or No. 6singles. Last year Mouly was an impressive 16-3 in dual-match singles play and finished 9-1 at the No. 6 slot. Ozurovich saw some action at No. 6 singles, and provided the Toreros some depth while playing with three different doubles partners. Junior Thomas Liversage (Welkom, South Africa) turned in a solid sophomore cam– paign and will compete for playing time at either No. 1or No. 2singles. Last year Liversage compiled a 13-5 dual-match singles record in the spring , and also teamed with Ysern at No. 1 Doubles for an 11-4 mark. The Torero duo were named First Team AII-WCC Doubles; advanced to the NCAA Tournament; and finished with a national ranking of 32nd. Junior Sammy Atri (Mexico City, Mexico) is USD's fourth upperclassman, and has shown marked improvement in each of his first two years. Atrio of sophomores figure to play a key role in USD's success in 2007. They include Chris Coetzee (Durban, South Africa), Ryo Sekiguchi (Tokyo, Japan) and Chari Wolma– rans (Capetown, South Africa). Look for Coetzee to play either No. 2or No. 3singles for the Toreros, and team up with Liversage at No. 1 doubles. Last year as a freshman Coetzee finished with a 6-2 mark at No. 6 singles. Sekiguchi turned in a very solid freshman year and should compete at either No. 4 or No. 5 singles for the Toreros . Last year Sekiguchi finished 11-6 overall in singles, including a 9-4 mark at No. 5 singles. Wolmarans, who has a powerful game, should compete in the middle of the Toreros' singles lineup, and is projected to team up with Jonas Mouly at No. 2 doubles. Coach Hagedorn welcomes two new Toreros in freshmen Levon Brown (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and Lawrence Kourie (San Diego, CA). Brown competed at the National Sport School in Alberta where he was ranked in the top-1 O in Alberta. This past season he spent about 5months at the Wiel Tennis Academy in Ojai , California , and proceeded to be ranked in the top-60 for SoCal 18s. Kourie is a local product who played up the road at Torrey Pines High School. Last year he was named First Team All-Palomar League and Division I AII-CIF Section. Once again the Toreros , who enter the spring season ranked 42nd , will tackle a very tough schedule. Thirteen opponents are ranked in the ITAPreseason Top-75, and six appear in the Top-25. Those six teams include #4 UCLA, #9 Stanford, #10 Pepperdine , #22 North Carolina, #24 Wake Forest, and #25 Boise State. Following three straight road matches to open the season , USO will host a 13-match homestand between February 8th and March 24th. Following four road matches to begin the month of April , the Toreros will play host to the 2007 West Coast Conference Championships (April 20-22) . Should USO advance to its fifth straight NCAA Tournament, the Regionals will be held at sixteen host sites over the weekend of May 11-13. The NCAA Team and Individual Championships are being held at the Univ. of Georgia between May 17-28.

r
Tom Hagedorn Head Coach - 11th Season
Tom Hagedorn enters his 11th season as head coach of the University of San Diego men's tennis program. He has guided the Toreros to ten straight winning seasons and four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Last year's club finished 15-7 overall, finished ranked 37th in the nation , placed 2nd in the West Coast Conference, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Notable wins came against No. 18 USC, No. 23 Texas Tech and No. 29 Boise State. Hagedorn enters the 2007 campaign with an overall record of 130-91 in his ten seasons at Alcala Park. In 2005 he coached the Toreros to their third consecutive
NCAA Tournament appearance, a competition in which junior Pierrick Ysern was named the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis National runner-up. As a team, the Toreros finished 16-7 on the year, marking their ninth straight winning season.
In 2004, he guided the Toreros to its second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, finishing at 13-8 and ranked 42nd in the nation. In 2003, the Toreros qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time under Hagedorn's watch. The past four seasons Pierrick Ysern earned a-spot on the AII-WCC Singles Team and in 2002, the No. 1 doubles team of Juan Cerda and Jason Pongsrikul advanced to the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championships. Hagedorn came to USO via the University of Arizona where he was assistant coach under Bill Wright since 1988. During his tenure the UAWildcats advanced to the NCAA Tournament twice (1995, 1996), with the 1996 team finishing 18-10 and ranked No. 23 in the nation by the Intercol– legiate Tennis Association (ITA). Prior to joining the Arizona coaching staff, Hagedorn played four years on the Wildcat tennis team (1984-87). As a player, he was ranked in the top-10 in the Southwest (1982, 1983). He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Marketing. Besides his coaching duties, Hagedorn has been a member of the U.S. Professional Ten– nis Association for the past thirteen years; has coached collegiate All-Americans and ATP Touring Professionals - the most notable being Jim Grabb who was No. 1 in the world in doubles in 1993 and No. 29 in singles; and was director of the Bill Wright Tennis Camp in Vail, Colorado from 1989-1996. For the fourth straight season, Hagedorn will be Region Vlll's representative on the ITA Division I Operating Committee. Tom and his wife, Melissa , reside in San Diego.
Robbie Blair Assistant Coach - 2nd Season
Robbie Blair is back for his second season as assistant coach to the USO men's tennis team. A four-year Torero for the men's program between 2002-2005, Blair helped USO head coach Tom Hagedorn guide the 2006 Toreros to an overall mark of 15-7. During his senior year in 2005, Blair finished 16-5 in singles and teamed with Thomas Liver– sage in doubles for a 15-8 mark. In his junior campaign, Blair earned West Coast Conference Honor– able Mention accolades in singles, finishing with a 10-6 record , mainly playing in the No. 2 and No. 4 spots. As a sophomore, Blair reached the round of 16 of several prestigious tournaments, including the Wathen/Hancock Bulldog Classic and Omni Hotels Southern California Regional Championship. His 14 victories that season tied him with the most on the squad and contributed to his being named to the AII-WCC Honorable Mentions Singles Team.
Prior to his career as a Torero, Blair was the No. 1 player in South Africa and ranked as high as No. 60 in the world as a junior player. He represented South Africa in the World Cup in the U-14, U-16 , and U-18 divisions and reached the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon and Australian junior events in the doubles bracket. "I am ecstatic to have Robbie Blair continue as a Torero," said head coach Tom Hagedorn. "To have a player of his caliber will only help the program. Robbie has helped our team move up the rankings the last four years as a player and he will continue to do so as the assistant coach . Robbie has a work ethic that is second to none."

TORERO TENNIS TRADITION
USO has a rich tradition of tenni s. Twice the team won NCAA Division II titles (1974 & 1975). In I979 the team finished second and in 1980 the program moved up to the NCAA Division I ranks. Former coach Ed Collins directed USD's move to Divison I and was with the program for I8 seasons ( 1979-96) where he accumulated an overall record of 350-1 90; won two Ojai team titles; two WCC titles and took the team to the NCAA's three times. This winning tradition was started by Andrew Rae, a native of Melbourne, Aus– tralia, who won NCAA Division II singles and doubles titl es in 1974 and 1975 . In 1978 USD's Rick Goldberg and Par Svensson won the NCAA Doubles Championship. From 1980 through 1982 the netters were regularly ranked among the nation 's top 20 Division I teams. In 1980 and 1981 the Toreros won Ojai team titles. During that time the team was led by Scott Lipton (San Jose, CA, 1980 NCAA Division I All-American), Terry Ward (St. Louis, MO, 198 l WCC Singles Champ and 1981 Ojai Champ) and Peter Herrmann (San Diego, 1982 Ojai Champ). The Toreros were back in the national rankings in 1987, on the strength of their 24-9 record and dual match wins over Stanford and Pepperdine. Senior Jim McNamee (Seattle, WA) was a WCC Singles Finalist and the team of Dave Stewart (Saratoga, CA)
and Scott Patridge (La Jolla , CA) won the WCC Doubles Championship. Led by four-time NCAA All-American, Jose Luis Noriega, USD won West Coast Conference
Pierrick Ysern 2005 National Runner-up
Championships in 1989 and 1990 and earned Volvo/ITA National Rankings of#l4 in '89 and # 12 in ' 90. This coming April (2007), Noriega will be inducted into USD's Chet & Marguerite Pagni Family Athletic Hall of Fame. USO annually competes at the nation's highest level of intercollegiate play. Elev– enth-year coach Tom Hagedorn has guided the Toreros to ten straight winning seasons and a school record four straight trips to the NCAA Tournaments. Once again , the 2007 schedule includes a number of the nation 's top ranked teams and several prestigious pre– season tournaments. Last season the Toreros finished with a record of 15-7 overall and finished with a national ranking of#37. Senior Pierrick Ysern (Paris, France) advanced to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Champ ionships. Two seasons ago Ysern was the National Runner–
up at the NCAA Individua l Singles Cham– pionships, and earned NCAA All-America honors along the way. Ysern helped guide the Toreros to an overall mark of 16-7 (#39 team rank). In 2005 USD finished 13-8 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the 2nd
