attacking player with great skill who also played for the Nomads Academy, and Conor McFad– den brings add itional options in t he defense and midfield having ach ieved CIF All-League Divi– si on I awards fo r West View High School. James Cohn, a tough tackling midfield player, comes from the strong Sereno Club that won the Arizona State Cup. Finally, Chris– t ian Duke is a left side player from Ka nsas who is the son of Chris Duke who played at USO in the late eighties. The team has once again in– creased thei r strength of sched– ule. The Toreros will face a strong preseason schedule followed by an intense double round-robin sched ule. "Last year we played seven teams that were consistently in the top-10 over the past few years;' said McFadden. "There was no break in the schedule before con– ference. We wanted the schedule– to be chall eng ing again this sea– son but with an opportunity to be ready fo r conference:' Fou r of the seven preseason opponents made an appearance in t he NCAA post season (Penn– sylvania 1st round, Dartmouth 3rd round, Michigan State 1st round, UCLA 1st round). Three teams were ranked in the NSCAA t op-25 poll (Pennsylvania 20th, UCLA 13th, Michigan State 9th) while two teams were ranked in the NSCAA post-season poll (Dartmouth 20th, Michigan State 17th). "The good th ing for us is that we won't be traveling for the first mont h, except to San Diego State;' said McFadden. "We're definitely much better t hat we were last year;' said Mc– Fadden . "We struggled to score goals so we brought guys into t he midfield that can control the ball better. We are looking to be more cohesive and to put passes together and keep possession longer in order to be more dan– gerous on the counter-attack:'

while Drew Delis will compete for a midfield position. The sophomores on the squad are defenders David Armstrong and Sean O'Connor, forward Stephen Posa, and midfielders Charles Blase and Jorge Reza. Reza and Posa w il l both be strong ly considered for starting positions this sea– son after a strong year last sea– son. David Armstrong opted to red-shirt his freshman year and will be competing for playing time along with Blase and O'Connor. The Toreros have a number of newcomers who will help them in their endeavors to make an NCAA Tournament appearance. USO has man– aged to recruit a Brazi lian, a Swede, two Mexican players and an Irishman to the team as well as a number of local play– ers, West Regional players and a son of an alumni standout that Coach McFadden had on the team 20 plus years ago. Marcelo Carminatti is a Bra– zilian forward who is a j unior transfer from Barton Commu– nity College where he achieved All-American status. Sergio Carranza is a forward from Tijuana, Mexico and played for the Surf Soccer Academy. Pablo Inda from Chihuahua, Mexico is another great add i– tion who will challenge for a defensive position. Ryan Coul– ter, a goalkeeper from County Wicklow, Ireland, has great potential. He graduated from Colaiste Ide College Prep pro– gram. Patrick Wallen is a pow– erful Swedish forward who is a prolific scorer in his native country. USO also has an exciting group of local talent to chal– lenge for positions. Drew Delis is a junior transfer UC Santa Cruz who brings good defen– sive experience to the mid– field . Nolan Chand ler is an– other junior transfer from the University of Louisville who is versatile and has great pace. Dan Delgado is a left footed

With a strong core of returners combined with a mix of local and international talent, Head Coach Seamus McFadden and his staff are looking forward to another out– standing season that will hurl them into the post season. In addition to the return of last years coach– ing staff, Eddie Ahman will join as a Student Assistant Coach. After a second place tie with Gonzaga in the 2008 wee final standings, the Toreros look to ad– vance to post season play in 2009. USO returns nearly all of its start– ers, including First Team AII-WCC defender Ryan Peterman and First Team AII-WCC goalkeeper Kelin Bri– ones. The team also looks forward to senior Sam Reeder in the back– field after missing the 2008 season due to injury. "Obviously the key will be to in– tegrate the new players with the guys we have returning;' explained Coach McFadden. "The level of competition for the returners will be the highest they've seen in their years here at USO. Everyone will be hard-pushed for playing time and that's the way we want it:' The senior class consists of de– fenders Ryan Peterman, Tim Grey, and Sam Reeder, forwards J.T. How– Ian, Kyle Ochoa, and Andrew Feld, goalkeeper Kelin Briones and mid– fielder Trevor May. Peterman and Grey were the heart of the defense last season . Reeder was missed with a season-ending injury but will compete for a spot back on the starting roster this season. Ochoa and Feld will compete again for a starting position as front men for the Toreros at forward. Kelin Brio– nes will lead the last line of defense with Adam Campbell and newcom– er Ryan Coulter backing him up. The juniors returning to the team are defender Cory Norris, midfield– er Kegan Johnson, and goa lkeeper Adam Campbell. Joining the junior class will be forwards Marcelo Car– minatti and Nolan Chander and midfielder Drew Delis. Norris and Johnson will both compete for playing time along with the three transfers who are looking for time on the field . Carminatti and Chan– dler are looking for a slot at forward

EAMUS McFADDEN ead Coach - 31st Season

Head Coach Seamus McFadden earned his 300th career victory in 2008 joining an elite group of coaches who have achieved such a milestone. McFadden is also a member of an even more pres– tigious group of coaches who have accumulated that many career wins at the same institution. No. 300 came on October 26, 2008 in front of a home crowd against Loyola Marymount as the Toreros defeated the Lions 3-0. With all of the success enjoyed by the Torero soccer teams the last several years - eleven NCAA Tournament appearances in thirteen seasons - it is easy to overlook the remarkable job Coach Sea– mus McFadden has done building the program from the ground up. McFadden has been named West Coast Confer– ence Coach of the Year a record seven times (2000, '99, '98, '95, '94, '92, '86); won five wee champion– ships; has coached eight WCC Defensive Players of the Year, six WCC Offensive Players of the Year and four WCC Freshman Players of the Year. 2008 squad finished conference tied for second place at 6-5-1 with the Gonzaga Bulldogs. It marks the second year in a row that USO has finished in second place. In 2003 his squad went 12-4-4, placed second in the highly competitive WCC, and reached the 2nd round of the NCAA Tourney. In 2002 he directed USO to a 14-6 mark and first round appearance in the NCAATourney. In 2001 the Toreros went 12-4-1 and four seasons ago he directed hisToreros to a 16-2-2 record, anotherWCC title and its eighth trip to the NCAAs since 1990. The Toreros reached a national ranking as high as 3rd before finishing the season tenth overall (program-best). McFadden arrived at USO in 1979 and fielded USD's first team in the fall of 1980.That same year he was quoted in the team's yearbook as saying: "I have no doubts that in the near future the University of San Diego will become a force to be reckoned with in Southern California intercollegiate soccer:· How prophetic his words turned out to be. The 1986 Toreros won 19 of 24 games. The 1990 squad, led by the first of McFadden's four All-Americans, dropped just three games the entire season and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Those who know McFadden closely could see the writing on the wall many years earlier, when the Irishman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 record over two seasons while at the same time guiding Clairemont High to consecutive CIF-San Diego Section titles and the La Jolla Cup.

The whole puzzle came together in 1992 when McFadden had in place several of San Diego's best local talent. Student-athletes, who in the past had looked outside the city to showcase their talents, were suddenly arriving at Alcala Park. The 1992 Toreros showed remarkable poise under their leader, compiling a 19-5 record and advancing to the NCAA Championship Game. The 54-year-old McFadden seems to save his best coaching for the big games. Twice the Toreros have marched onto UCLA's home turf and walked away with stunning upsets over the heavily-favored Bruins. In 1994, USO shutout No. 6 ranked N.C. State, 3-0, in front of a national cable television audience. In 1998, USO upset Cal State Fullerton, the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, at Titan Stadium in first round action. In 1999 the Toreros defeated then No. 1-ranked Santa Clara on the road, 2-1 in overtime. USO is 8-1 O in NCAA Tournament games under McFadden's direction.

McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in History in 1976.That same summer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League.

Keeping true to his native roots, McFadden took the 1997 squad on a trip to his homeland, Ireland during the summer for ex– hibition games against Ireland and Britain's elite. In the summer of 2002 he is took his players to England. A native of Donegal, Ireland, Seamus and his wife Davette have two daughters (Hadley & Rorye) and a son (Conor). The McFaddens reside in Rancho Periasquitos.

KE NICHOLSON th Season

Michael "Nico" Nicholson is in his fifth season as an assistant coach to Seamus McFadden and the University of San Diego men's soccer program. Nicholson comes to Alcala Park after serving as an assistant coach to the University of California, San Diego

women's soccer program from 1994- 2005 . During his stint with UCSD, the Tritons captured three NCAA Division II and three NCAA Division Ill national championships.

From 2003-05, Nicholson was also the director of the Temecula/ Mur– rieta Soccer Club and from 1998 to 2003, he acted as the Head Boy's Coach for the San Diego Surf. Many of the club teams at the Surf achieved Regional and State success and many of his players were placed on national teams. In 1994, he coached the Nomads Boy's Under 16 club that won a national championship. In addition to his tremendous wealth of coaching experience, Nich– olson also spent time with the United Systems of Independent Soccer League, a men's semi-professional league. He played three seasons ► for the San Diego Top Guns from 1993-95 and guided his team to the Regional Finalists in 1994 and 1995. Nicholson graduated from the University of Leeds in England, where he earned a degree in Sports Science in 1989. He captained his soc– cer team to the national finals in 1989 and his team won the national championship in 1986.

IAN QUINN Assistant Coach - 3rd Season

Born in Belfast, Ireland, Brian Quinn returns to the USD men's soc– cer program for his third year with the Toreros. He has many years of both playing and coaching at the highest level to accompany his d istinguished 16 year professional career dating back all the way to 1978. Quinn holds a USSF 'A' Coaching license. He coached the San Diego

Sockers in the CISL from 1995-96. In 1997-99 coached the San Jose Clash/Earthquakes of the MLS before returning for a second term with the San Diego Sockers from 2000-04 in the MISL. The former Director of Coaching of Poway Youth Soccer Club (1991- 94), Quinn currently is the Director of Boys coaching for F.C. San Diego, and is a Technical Director for Adidas ESP developmental program. He also coached The Bishop's School, La Jolla girls varsity soccer team. Quinn was an 8 time Champion with the San Diego Sockers, 8 time All-Star, 4th all time scorer in Sockers history, 2nd All time playoff Scorer, 2 Time MVP in playoff championship Series (1986 & 1990), 1991 Gold Cup Winner - US National Team, 1992 US Cup Winner - US National Team, was the youngest coach in Major League Soccer history in 1997.

GUILLERMO RODRIGUEZ Goalkeeper Coach - 2nd Season

Guillermo Rodriguez returns for his second year with the USD coaching staff as a volunteer helping to fine tune the goalkeepers.

Most recently, Rodriguez has been ap– pointed the head coach position as well as the director of goalkeeping for the U- 9 Three Lions boys team and is also the director of goalkeeping for the Carlsbad Lightning soccer club. He is also the Senior Staff Coach at Soccer Plus Goalkeeping Academy for the past four years. As a keeper for Niagara University men's soccer team from 1996-2000, he studied under now Cornell University Keeper coach Ziggy Zagante who was also a former MLS coach. Rodriguez was a four year starter for the Purple Eagles and to this day, remains in the record books in 11 seperate categories (most noteably, best career goals against average with 1.81, most career saves at 346, most career shutouts with nine, and most starts in goal with 54). He was the Metro Atlantic Athletic Confer– ence goalkeeper of the year as a freshman and player of the week twice that season. Rodriguez graduated with a BS in Commerce with a focus on management.

Eddie Ahman begins his first year at the Uni– versity of San Diego as a student assistant coach . He played for two seasons under McFadden as a defender for the Toreros. Ahman's responsibilities include one-on-one training with players during

practice, assisting Coach Rodriguez and the goalkeepers, as well as maintaining and the field equipment. He brings a positive attitude and valuable insight to the coaching staff. Ahman hails from Linkoping, Sweden where he has been playing soccer since the age of five. He moved here to play for the Torero soccer program and achieve a college degree in Business with an emphasis in Real Estate. Ahman has two younger brothers (Alex, 23, and Carl, 21) who currently live in Sweden and are both in school. His father Mikael and mother Maria live in Monaco and Ahman and his two brothers reunite with the family every Christmas and summer.

ELI BISNETT-COBB Athletic Trainer - 2nd Season

Eli Bisnett-Cobb joined the University of San Diego Sports Medicine Department after spending two years as an Intern Athletic Trainer with the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL. During his time in Minnesota he assisted the Vikings Medical Staff with the prevention, rehabilitation, and care of the athletes, as well as day to day operations of the sports medicine department for all games, practices, off-season activities and re– habilitation of players. Prior to that he spent two years as a Graduate Assistant Athletic trainer at The George Washington University in Washington, DC where he was respon- sible for the Women 'sVolleyball team, and Baseball team.

Eli completed his undergraduate degree at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY where he was also a member of the Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field team. His Primary Sport Assignment is Baseball. He also is responsible for men's rowing. Personal: A native New Yorker, Eli currently resides in Pacific Beach. His Parents, Susan Bisnett and Gregory Cobb, Three Brothers, Andre (38), Donny (30), Adrian (24), and Twin Sister Natasha (25) currently reside in the Albany, NY area.
