SETTING The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mi ss ion Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spani sh village near Madrid - Alcala de He nares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kal a (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a uni ve rsity whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's architectural style. THE CAMPUS The US O campu s is regarded as one of the most architecturall y uniqu e instituti ons in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an orna– mental I6th ce ntury Spanish Renaissance styl e . Since 1984, US O has com– pleted eleven maj or construction and ex pansion projects. A fiv e-story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage ( I, I00 spaces) was compl eted in 1998. A land– scaped fo untai n plaza was fini shed in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immac ul ata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the uni versity comp leted the 45 ,000 square foot Loma Hall , whi ch includes an expanded bookstore, a larger maiI center, c lassrooms and laboratori es. In 1990, th e reno– vated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Ce nter ope ned, a faci lity that offers the latest in information techno logy.
ACADEMICS
USO e nroll s more than 6,800 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and grad uate degree programs. The uni vers ity's academi c units include the Col– lege of Arts and Sciences, and the School s of Business Ad– mini strati on, Educat ion , Law and Nursing. C lass size gener– a ll y ave rages between 18-25 stude nts w ith th e student to teacher rati o being 18 : I. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time fac ulty ho ld doctorates. In the an nual ratings of the country's colleges and uni ve rsiti es, publi shed by U.S. News & World Reporl , USO moved from the reg ional to nati onal category in 1994. The uni ve rsity is ranked among the top 100 sc hoo ls in the nation.

u1u I uu ~.l"IU vV ? ♦ With a donation of $7 million by Sid and Jenny Craig, USD re– ceived the lead gift necessary to proceed with planning its much needed $17.5 million Sports/Ac– tivities Center, the Jenny Craig Pavilion (JCP). The pavilion, which will be located at the east– ern end of campus between Torero Stadium and Cunningham Base– ball Stadium, will include a 5,000 seat gymnasium, coaches offices, fitness center and athletic training facilities, showers and locker rooms, concession stand and re– ception room. The Chet Pagni Athletic Hall of Fame will also be housed in the facility. Construc– tion of the JCP should be com– pleted in the Fall of 2000.

The intramural pro– gram is also an integra l part of student life at USO with over two-thirds o f the US O community partaking in intramural sports. ATHLETICS The University of San Diego is a member of the Wes t Coast Conference for nearl y all sports and competes in 16 interco llegi ate sports on the NCAA Di vision I leve l. The football team is in its seventh year in the Pioneer Football League and the NCAA I-AA leve l. Women's sports include: basketball , crew, cross country, soccer, so ftball , swim– ming, tenni s and vo ll ey ball. Men's sports inc lude: baseball, basketball , crew, cross country, go lf, football , soccer and tenni s. Since 1990 USO teams have won seven conference championships; made 20 post-season appearances; had nineteen Confer– ence Coaches of the Year; sixteen Conference Players of the Year; eleven Conference Freshman of the Year; three WCC Scholar Athletes of the Year; and 21 NCAA All– Ameri cans. This past year, Zuzana Lesenarova, a junior on the women's tenni s team, became the school 's first ever Divi sion I national champion by winning the 1999 NCAA Women's Tenni s Singles Championship. The USO men's soccer team in the l990's has advanced to the NCAA Tournament six times, including a runner-up fini sh at the 1992 NCAA Soccer Championships.
