199B Season Preview
t/
Seamus McFadden, who enters his 20th season as the University of San Diego men 's soccer coach, returns six starters and fourteen letter– winners from last year 's squad that finished 11- 7-1. Last season the Tore– ros finished strong, winning six of their final seven contests, marking the sixth straight season with double-digit victories. For the upcoming '98 season Coach McFadden will have a solid mix of returners, including six starters, to go with an impressive list of newcomers. Heading the list of returners will be team captains Leighton O'Brien and Roland Weisheit. O ' Brien, the 1996 WCC Player of the Year and a two-time WCC First Teamer, returns for his senior season after leading the Toreros in 1997 with 16 points (5 goals, 6 assists). Slowed by early season injuries in '97, the senior midfielder hopes to put up numbers in '98 similar to his sophomore season of 33 points (10 goals, 13 assists). Weisheit, in his second and final season with USD, will spearhead the Torero defense at the defender position with his leadership and aggressive style of play. San Diego's offensive attack should be improved with the return of junior forwards Levi Parker (6 goals, 3 assists) and Mike Marvil (6 goals, 2 assists ; WCC Honorable Mention), along with the addition of transfer Devin Ebright from Saint Mary's, a two-time WCC First Teamer who scored 13 goals last season. Ebright, who led the Saint Mary's Gaels in scoring in each of his three years there, has 32 career goals to his credit and will finish among the West Coast Conference's all-time top ten. With eight players graduating from last year 's club, including the team's top two keepers , coach McFadden will be looking for his returners to all step up their games this season. Gone from the Toreros graduating class were its top two keepers, Carlos Castellanos and Joe Panian. Mc– Fadden will look to sophomore N'Aron Akins and newcomer Justin Neer– hof (Denver, CO) to step in and fill the void. Other returners expected to make key contributions this season include sophomore midfielder Miguel Suazo, a '97 WCC Honorable Men– tion pick who posted 17 starts; junior midfielder Brian O'Connor -- he topped last year's squad with 18 starts; junior defender Erin O'Connor - - he scored 8 points in 9 starts; senior midfielder Ryan Patrick --he has 47 career games under his belt;junior midfielder Antonio Gonzales, and soph– omore forward Joel Armstrong -- six starts in 19 games as a freshman. Newcomers expected to vye for starting spots and who should play a large portion of minutes this season include junior defender Fre– drik Johnsson (Hollviken, Sweden), freshman defender Eric Van De– men (Littleton, CO), freshman midfielder Mike Piserchio (Littleton, CO), freshman defender Colin Keely (Dublin, Ireland) and freshman defender Tim Petrovic (Essex, England). · ' -. · USD will be tested early on as they participate in the Fullertori Tourney with No. 3 Virginia and Kentucky, followed by the Washington Tourney with the No. 16 Huskies and Oregon State. The Toreros will also face Fullerton and UCLA in their own home tourneys leading up to league play in October. USD's first WCC match will be on the road at USF on October 9th; the Toreros will host Portland, Santa Clara and Gonzaga in home WCC matches . . •·:i. . '. ~ ; '

MetLife Perhaps the biggest highlight of the USO home soc– cer season, the annual MetLife Classic draws more fans media coverage and excitement to Torero Stadium tha~ any other event. By lending its name and support, the MetLife Company and USO have teamed to field one of the best tournaments in the West. 9th Annual MetLife Classic hosted by USD Sept. 18-20, Torero Stadium Featuring: USO, CS Fullerton Michigan State, CS Northridge,
Since the late 1980s, many USO players have moved on to the pro ranks following their collegiate careers. The following players have gone on to play profess ional indoor or outdoor, or both: Chugger Adair ('90-92) , David Beall (' 90-93), Chris Duke ('85-88), Scott Garlick ('90-93), Paul Gelvezon ('90-91), Guillermo Jara ( '92- 95), Kevin Legg ('91-93), Jamie Munro ({94-97) and Toby Taitano ('90-93) . The West Coast Conference The WCC is considered one of the top soccer confer– ences in the nation. WCC teams have reached the NCAA Final Four five times since 1988 (Portland 1988 & 1995 ; Santa Clara 1989 & 1991; USO 1992) with Santa Clara becoming co-national champs in 1989. San Francisco owns four national titles. In 1993, the WCC placed four teams in the NCAA tournament, more than any other conference. Toreros Travel To Ireland & England The Toreros took a two-week trip to Ireland and En– gland two summers ago to compete against several club teams in the region. The 14-day journey began in Dublin, Ireland and continued down to Cork before ending with a three day excursion just outside of London. Some of the highlights of the trip included a visit to the Blarney Castle and the Blarney Stone and a chance to see an En– glish Premier League game between the Arsenal and the Coventry. It was the second time Head Coach Seamus McFadden had taken his team to his native homeland of Donegal, Ireland for enriched experiences overseas and soccer play different to what most of the players were accustomed to in the United States at the collegiate level.

Coaching Staff
With the recent success enjoyed by the Torero soccer teams the last few years - five NCAA Tournament appearances in eight seasons - it is easy to overlook the re– markable job Coach Seamus McFadden has done building the program from the ground up. McFadden has been named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year a record four times ('95, '94, '92, '86), has coached four Defensive Players of the Year, three Offensive Players of the Year and two Freshman Players of the Year. McFadden arrived at USD in I979 and fielded USD's first team in the fall of 1980. That same year he was quoted in the team's yearbook as saying: "I have no doubts that in the near future the University of San Diego will become a force to be reckoned with in Southern California intercollegiate soccer." How prophetic his words turned out to be. The 1986 Toreros won 19 of 24 games. The 1990 squad, led by the first of McFadden's four All-Americans, dropped just three games the entire season and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Those who know McFadden closely could see the writing on the wall many years earlier, when the Irishman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 record over two seasons while at the same time guiding Clairemont High to consecutive CIF-San Diego Section titles and the La Jolla Cup. The whole puzzle came together in 1992 when McFadden had in place several of San Diego's best local talent. Student-athletes, who in the past had looked outside the city to showcase their talents, were suddenly arriving at Alcala Park. The 1992 Toreros showed remarkable poise under their leader, compiling a 19-5 record and advancing to the NCAA

Championship Game.
The 46-year old McFadden seems to save hi s best coaching for the big games. Twice the Toreros have marched onto UCLA's home turf and walked away with stunning upsets over the heavily-fa– vored Bruins. In 1994, USO shutout No. 6 ranked N.C. State, 3-0, in front of a national cable telev i– sion audience. USO can boast of a .600 winning percentage in NCAA games under McFadden's direction. McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in History in 1976. That same summer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League. Keeping true to his native roots, McFadden took the 1997 squad on a trip to his homeland Ireland during the summer for exhibition games against Ireland and Britain's elite. A native of Donegal , Ireland, Seamus and hi s wife davette have two daughters (Hadley & Ro– rye) and a son (Conor). The McFaddens reside in Rancho Penasquitos.

Assistant Coach Harry Tweedie returns for his eighth season at USO. A native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Tweedie is a veteran of I6 years playing in many of his homeland's top leagues. Tweedie immigrated to the U.S. in 1970 and since has had an extensive background in coaching and player development in this country. He was head coach of the San Diego Villa Under 19 team which captured the McGuire Cup as National Champions in 1979 and 1980. He will assist Coach McFadden with practice and game preparations, scouting and player evaluation.
USD soccer however as he played three years for Coach Mc– Fadden between 1990-92. As a sophomore, his first year at USO, he scored 25 points (8 goals, 9 assists) in leading USD to a I6-3-5 mark and the NCAA's. Injuries slowed his junior campaign, however, he came back strong in 1992, scoring 16 goals and leading the Toreros to a 19-5 mark and the NCAA championship game against Virginia. In 1992 he was a Third Team NSCAAAll-American; All-Far West Region 2nd Team; and the WCC Offensive Player of the Year. Adair has played both professional indoor and outdoor soccer since graduating from USO -- he also earned his MBA from USD in 1996.
