THE SITTING

The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic insti– tution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as well . The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fi fteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Cascle) by the Moslems. Chris– tians recaptured the vi llage centuries lacer and founded a university, the Universi ty of Alcala, whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. Boch institutions are located on a hill overlooking a river valley.

THE CAMPUS

The USD campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Si nce 1984, USD has completed 11 major construction and expansion projects. A five-story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage (1,100 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped fo untain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laborarories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technology.

ACADEMICS USD enrolls more than 7,200 students who have a choice of more than 50 under– g raduate and grad uate degree programs. The university's academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18: 1. Over 97 percent ofUSD's fu ll -time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and universities, publi shed by U.S. N ews & World Report , USD moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top 100 schools in the nation. STUDENT LIFE Student activities incl ude cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Students parti cipate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring , senior citi zen outreach , and house building in Tij uana. The intramural p rogram is also an integral part of student li fe on campus with over two-thirds of the USD commu nity partaking in intramural sports.

ATHlETICS The U niversity of San Diego is a member of the W est Coast Confe rence fo r nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercolleg iate sports on the NCAA Divis ion I level. W omen's sports include: basketball, crew, cross country, soccer, softball, swimm ing, tennis and volleyball . Men's sports incl ude: baseball , basketball , crew, cross country, golf, football, soccer and tennis. Since 1990 USD teams have won ten conference championships; made 30 NCAA post-season appearances; had 26 Conference Coaches of the Year; 21 Conference Players of the Year, 12 Confere nce Freshmen of the Year, four WCC Scholar Athletes of the Year and 30 All-America selections.

2004 USD COACHING STAFF

Brooks Dagman

Head Coach

14th Year

Brooks Dagman enters his fourteen th season as the Head Coach of Men 's Rowing at USD. Over the past thirteen seasons, Dagman has turned the USD Men's Crew Program into one of the most respected programs in the west. During hi s tenure, Dagman has consistantly guided USD into the medal s at both the regional and national level. Thi s past season he directed the team to victory in the Newport Regatta, fo ll owed by two grand final performances by both the novice and varsity teams at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Championships. The team ended its season by placing fifth out of fourty six teams in the varsity heavyweight fours race at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The 2003 season saw the Toreros place second in the WCC conferance and set a new school record of 5:58 in the men's varsity eight.

Besides hi s USD position, he has also served as assistant coach on the U.S. National Rowing Team which competed in the Pan American Games in Argentina; has worked with the national team at Lake Otay ; been President of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association ; and served as the southwest representative for the Mens Olympic Rowing Commjttee. Dagman was named to the USD post in 1992 after sevi ng as senior ass istant coach at UCLA from 1986-91. He earned three varsity letters as an oarsman for the Bruins ( 1982-85), receiving the team 's Most Valuable Oarsman Award in 1984. Brooks and his wife, Barbara, reside in Lemon Grove with their daughter, Madeleine (I 0).

Nick Navarro

Assistant Coach

2nd Year

Born and raised in San Diego, Nicholas arrived at USD in the autumn of 1999 with no prior rowing experience. After spending hi s first two years establishing himself in the program, he began to prosper in hi s junior year when he made the Varsity Lightweight 8 and was voted "Most Improved" for the 2002 season. In order to prepare for hi s senior season at USD, Nick spent the summer of 2002 in Vancouver, Washington as a coach, rigger and racing team member with Vancouver Lake Crew. The summer trajning paid off, and Nick quick ly established himself as one of the top starboards on the team early in the season. He was a member of the Men 's Open 4 that won the 2002 San Diego Fall Classic and sat bow in the Varsity 8 that set a school record of 5:58 for a 2,000 meter race at the 2003 WCC Championships, winning a silver medal in the process. That Varsity 8 went on to race in Philadelphia at the Dad Vai l Regatta, where they fini shed a remarkable 9' h place in USD 's first appearance in a V8 at that regatta. Nick was the only rower from his novice year to complete all four years of rowing, and he did so earning the team MVP honor in hi s senior year.
