What do I need to do in order to play at San Diego as a freshman? If yo u intend to participate in Division I or II athletics as a fres hman, you must register and be certified by the NCAA Ini tial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. Your high school co unselors should provide you with a student-release form and a brochure ti tled, "NCAJ\ Guide for the Coll ege-Bound Student-Athlete." In order to be registered with the clearinghouse, yo u must complete the student-release form and mail the top (white) copy of the form to the clearingho use along with the $50 registration fee. G ive th e ye!Jow and pink copies o f the fo rm to a high-school offi cial, who th en send s the yellow copy, along with an o fficial copy of yo ur high-school transcript that incl udes your SAT or ACT score(s), to the clearinghouse. Your high school sho uld keep the pink copy for its fi les. You may also register online at \\'W\\.ncaa– clcarinvhousc.nct. After graduation and before the school closes for the summer, your school also mu st send the clearinghouse a copy of yo ur fi nal transcript th at confirms graduation from high school. Your coun selors can obtain registration materials, at no cost, by calling th e clearingho use at (3 19) 337-1492 or (877) 262-1492. How do I know if I'm being recruited? Yo u become a " prospec tive student-athlete" wh en yo u star t nin th -grad e classes. Before th e ninth grade, you become a prospec– tive student-athlete if a college gives you (or your relatives or fri ends) any financial aid or other bene fi ts that the college does not provide prospective students generally. You become a "recruited prospective student-athlete" at a particul ar college if any coach approaches you (or any member of yo ur family) about enro!Jing and parti cipati ng in athletics at that college. Activities by coaches th at cause you to become a recruited prospective student-athlete are (1) providing you with an offi cial visit; (2) placing more than one telephone call to you or any other member o f yo ur family; or (3) visiting you or any other member of your family anywhere oth er th an th e college campus. Boosters: In addition to general recrui ting regulations, no alumni, boos ters or representatives of a college's athletics interests can be involved in your recruitment. There can be no phone calls or letters from boos ters. If a USD booster is contacting you, please call the San Diego Compliance Office as soon as possible at (619) 260-7577. fo llowi ng circumstances: (1) during the five days immediately before your official visit by th e co!Jege you will be visiti ng; (2) on th e day of a coach's o ff-campu s contact with yo u by that coach; (3) on the ini tial date for signing the National Letter o f Intent in your sport thro ugh two days after the initial signing date; and (4) you (or your parents) may telephone a coach at your expense as often as you wish. After a National Letter of Intent is signed, unlimited call s may be placed to the prospect. Off-Campus Contacts: A college coach m ay contact yo u in p erson o ff th e college campus o nly o n o r after July 1 a fter the compl eti o n o f yo ur junior year in high school. T h e contact must take place o n th e p rospec t's high sch ool campus and fol– low restrictio n s o n th e spo rt's recr uiting calend ar. A co n tact is an y face-to-face meeting between a coll ege coach or athle tics sta ff m ember and you o r your p arents, during which an y of yo u say m o re than " hello." Also, an y such face- to-face m eeting th at is prearranged o r that takes place o n yo ur campus, at an o rganized competition or p ractice involving yo u o r yo ur high sch ool, p rep arato r y sch ool, two-year co ll ege o r all-star team sh all b e con sidered a contact, regardless of the conver satio n. Evaluations: A n evaluatio n is an y off-campu s activ ity used to assess yo ur acad emi c qualificatio n s o r athletics ability, including a visit to your high school (during which n o contact o ccurs) o r watching yo u practice o r compete at an y site. In foo tball, a coach h as three evaluati o n o ppo rtuniti es and six co ntact o p– p o rtuniti es. O nce you sign a Natio nal Letter o f Intent, you m ay b e evaluated an unlimited number o f times b y a college co ach from th e college w ith which you h ave sign ed . Letters: L etter s and printed recruiting in formatio n m ay b e sent to you starting September 1 st at th e beginning o f yo ur junior year in high school. H owever, you m ay still co ntact a univer– sity prio r to this d ate to receive gen eral (n o n -athletic related) informatio n. Yo u m ay also compl ete an athletic qu es tio nnaire prio r to this d ate. What Can I Receive from San Diego? You (o r your family) may not receive any benefit, inducement or arrangement, such as cash, clothing, camp, improper expenses, trans– portation, gifts or loans to encourage you to sign a National Letter o f Intent or attend an NCAA college.
When can I talk to the coach and have him/her see me play?
Telephone Calls: In Football, a prospect may receive one phone call in May of the prospects junior year in high school and may start receiving additional calls after September 1 of your senior year. Af– ter this, a college coach is limi ted to one telephone call per week to you (or your parents or legal guardians), except that unlimited calls to you (or your parents or legal guardian s) may be made under the
