This 17.5 mi llion dollar area has a seating capacity of 5,100 as has quicklA garnered major attention from around the'! region, and the West Coast Conferenc;t selected USD as the site of the 2001, 2002. and 2003 WCC Basketball Championships, it has hosted the 2002 Ca liforn ia Junior Col-. lege Basketball Championships, the annua l Kiwanis Basketball Tournament, the Darrelw Russell Celebrity Charity Basketball game; the 2003 NFL Celebrity Basketba ll Game, th1 Official Super Bowl XXXVII Luncheon, and the 2004 Judo National Championships. 4 I
TORERO STADIUM Torero Stadium, celebrating its 45th anniversary, is the home of the University of San Diego Football and Soccer programs. The stadium, which underwent two phases of renovation, is perfect for an excit– ing ath letic atmosphere inside its confines. These recent renovations were comp leted to host the WUSA San Diego Spirit, with over $3.5 million dollars spent to enlarge the seating areas and add spectator comfort s.Torero stadium's capac– ity is now 7,000 for Pioneer Footba ll League action, as well as West Coast Conference Soccer play. The South stands feature approximately 1,100 seats wi th press box faci lities.The stands behind the East end seat approximately 1,900 fans after Phase Two of the renovation s. The existing North stands, which hold about 3,000 fans, remained as they were. The South stands feature bleacher seats with backs for increased spectator comfort.The East and North stands are all bleacher seating. In 2001, the installation of the upgraded lighting system took place, giving Torero Stadi um ample illumination for the numerous night events that take place at the stadium. The final steps in– cluded the paving of the pedestri an wa lkway that curves arou nd three-q uarters of the stadium, and the installation of a new state of the art sou nd system.The final piece of the renovations was a Daktron– ics video board that plays movie clips, replays, as well as scoreboard information. The playing surface is "Bu llseye" Bermuda grass, with soccer dimensions measuring 118 yards x 72 yards, with footbal l conforming to NCAA regulations. In the summer of 2008, Torero Stad ium received a $250,000 field renovation, wh ich included new Berma Sports turf and a new dra inage and irrigation system.
