The Un iversity of San Diego, which sponsors sixteen NCAA Division I interco llegiate teams, competes under the athl etic nickname ofToreros. In 196 1, the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the founding father of USO, announced that the school's nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. "The name Toreros is keeping w ith the friendly relationship which ex ists between San Diego and Mexico," His Excel lency sa id at the time. Torero comes from the spanish term toro, the bull, and from the word torear, to fight bul ls. Al l of the contestants in the ring are ca lled toreros. Torero is a genera l term descri bing a bu llfi ghter and signifies courage, honor and fidelity. USO student-athl etes, like the Torero, represent a willingness to stand alone in the ring and accept the chall enge. The 2005-2006 school year marks the 45th season with Toreros as the official nickname for USO athletic teams.
