TOREROS' FACE ARIZONA IN PRESEASON NIT The Preseason National InvitationTournament (NIT) was begun in 1985. This tournament is

the premiere preseason tournament in college basketball. The tournament is comprised of 16 teams with NCAA legislation allowing for only one team from a conference to participate in a given year. Legislation also states that a team may only participate once every four years. This season marks the first appearance for the University of San Diego Toreros. The format of the tournament is set up similar to the postseason tournament. The first two rounds are held at campus sites and the semifinals and the finals are held at Madison Square Gar– den . Heading into the 18th year of existence, the Preseason NIT has seen many great players, as well as , many great teams. One team that may stand out above the rest is the University of Kansas. Participating in the tournament an unprecedented four times, the J ayhawks boast a 15-1 record that includes a tournament record three championships and one 2nd place finish . The Arizona Wildcats, USD's first round opponent, has appeared in the prestigious tournament four times and has come away with the championship trophy on three occasions - 1990, 1995, 1999. Some of the former MVP 's of the tournament include: Vernon Maxwell, Florida (1987), Sherman Douglas, Syracuse (1988), Chris Mills, Arizona (1990), Byron Houston, Oklahoma State (1991), Calbert Cheaney, Indiana (1992), Gary Trent, Ohio (1994), Allen Iverson, Georgetown (1995), Andrae Patterson, Indiana (1996), Paul Pierce, Kansas (1997).
