ASSISTANT COACHES

GUS MAGEE Gus enters his 22nd season as a member of the University of San Diego coaching staff. He began his coaching career in 1970 as a graduate assistant to Bernie Bickerstaff while pursuing his Master's Degree in Social Science. He joined former USO coach Jim Brovelli in 1973.

Gus also completed his undergraduate degree at the Univers– ity of San Diego and was a top basketball player here after completing his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Gus played here from 1966-70, his first three years under legendary coach Phil Wool pert, and his final campaign with Bernie Bickerstaff. With him at center the Toreros had a 53-48 record. He was twice selected the team's most valuable player, in 1968-69 and again in 1969-70. He still holds most of the USO rebounding records including career boards (948), most in a single game (24), and the single season rebounding average (14.4) . Gus was the first USO alumnus to be inducted into the USO Basketball Hall of Fame. He takes great pride in being involved with USO basketball since 1966 and in helping it to grow from a small college program to its current status as a member of the NCAA Division One ranks and the West Coast Conference. He is currently an Administrative Analyst with the San Diego Public Library System . Gus and his wife Faye have one son, Mark.

JACK AVINA Beginning his 2nd season with Hank Egan's coaching staff, Jack Avina offers a wealth of experience to USO. At the helm of the University of Portland program for 17 years (1970-87), Jack is on staff in a part-time capacity and will be involved exclusively with teaching situations and in direct con– tact with the players.

As head coach of the University of Portland of the West Coast Conference, Avina posted a 17-year mark of 222-243. He is cur– rently the tenth winningest coach in wee history. In his last 10 seasons with the Pilots, Jack averaged 15 wins per season. His 1977-78 squad may have been his best, finishing 19-8 overall and 9-5 in the league, earning Avina WCC Coach of the Year honors. He started at the University of Portland after coaching at three different high schools and at San Mateo JC in California. His JC teams had a combined 140-80 record. Between 1987-89 he was head coach of a professional team in Turkey. During the summer of 1984, he worked with Coach Egan at the Olympic Tryouts in Bloomington, Indiana. Jack and his wife Claire have six children and make their home in Portland, Oregon.
