PEOPLE TO KNOW AT USO

A Message From President Hughes The men's basketball program is integral to the University's athletic endeavors, just as the athletic program is integral to our view of education - which is that education should develop the whole person. This program moved from NCAA Division II to Division I eight years ago, and each year has seen increasing strength and competitive capabilities in the USO team. The University is proud of the team's accomplishments, and pleased to support the program in every way possible, including scholarship aid to our athletes, recognition of the values of the program, and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. I believe our USO team will be receiving some national attention this year; and I look forward to watching the season's events unfold.

COACH HANK EGAN

HEAD COACH HANK EGAN Head Coach Hank Egan begins his 17th season as a Division I head coach this year and his 4th year at the helm of the University of San Diego program. Last year Coach Egan guided the Toreros to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. With a tough 62-61 loss to Auburn University in post-season play, the USD men's basketball team completed its most successful season ever. Along the way, USD won 14 consecutive games and won the regular-season West Coast Athletic Conference Champion– ship with a 13-1 record. His peers from the WCAC voted him the 1986-87 Coach of the Year. In 1985-86 he guided the Toreros to a fine record of 19-9 and was named Co-Coach of the Year in the WCAC, sharing the honor with Pepperdine's Jim Harrick. Hank has an impressive 3-year record of 59-26 with the Toreros and a 38-5 mark in the USD Sports Center. A recognized expert in the technical aspects of the game, Hank has an impeccable reputation for integrity, and is a coach who "gets the most" out of his players. Acknowledged as one of the finest defensive coaches in the nation, good defense is a trademark with Egan-coached teams. Last year's team finished #1 in the nation in field goal percentage defense (40.1%) and in the top-ten in scoring defense (60.3). His 1985-86 team finished 8th in the nation in field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to 42 .4% shooting. Prior to USD, Hank coached at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for eighteen years, thirteen as the head coach. Highlights of his coaching career include last season's NCAA participant, his 1986-87 19-9 season, his 16-11 team in 1985 and a 16-9 season in 1976. After 16 seasons as a Division I head coach, Hank carries an overall record of 207-211 into the 1987-88 campaign . As evidence of the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues and basketball people in general, Hank was the alternate coach to George Raveling (USC) for the United States Olympic Basketball team; he was a coach in the Olympic tryouts in Bloomington, Indiana, and also scouted South American Olympic teams in San Paulo, Brazil; he is a member of the Legislative Commission of the National Basketball Coaches Association of America; and, was one of only ten coaches chosen in 1984 by the NCAA to participate and represent the country's coaches in a special meeting of Presidents, Athletic Directors, and Faculty Representatives called to study the strengthening of academic requirements for intercollegiate athletics. Before becoming the second head coach in Air Force Basketball history, Egan was the freshman mentor for two seasons and was chief scout and recruiter during the 1970-71 season. From 1966 to 1968, he was an assistant junior varsity coach. A three-time basketball letterman at Navy, he also played several seasons on Air Force service teams and has coached on both the military and AAU levels. 1986-87 USO BASKETBALL REVIEW

Expectations were running high at Alcala Park last fall when the 1986-87 basketball season got underway. People were predicting, and expecting , big things out of last year 's men's basketball team - and the Toreros did not disappoint. With a tough 62-61 loss to Auburn University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the USO men's basketball team completed its most successful season ever. The Toreros finished the season with a 24-6 record , the best mark in school history. Along the way, USO won 14 consecutive games, won the regular-season West Coast Athletic Conference Championship and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in four years. C: g, "All teams in the future will now be compared with this team because "' ::e of how hard they worked and because of what they accompl ished ," stated ~ en Coach Hank Egan on his team's success. " It was an absolute pleasure ~ to coach these people because they came closer to reaching their paten-

"' Cl.

tial than any group I've ever had. They understood their strengths and weaknesses and they understood they had to work hard, that it wouldn't come easy," explained Egan. "They also understood that they had to work together. When it came to games, they were absolutely unselfish. The team's performance was the most important thing to them." And perform well they did. Senior center Scott Thompson led USO in scoring and rebounding and was named the WCAC's Player of the Year. All four senior starters averaged in double figures in scoring for the season . Thompson finished at 15.9 points per game. Forwards Nils Madden and Mark Manor were next, averaging 11 .1 ppg and 10.5 ppg respectively. Guard Paul Leonard scored 10.2 ppg and led the team in assists, handing out an average of 4.5 per game. Sophomore Danny Means, who paced USO against Auburn with 18 points, was the fifth member of the starting unit which began all 30 games last season . But the five starters were by no means the only contributors to USD's success. Senior Steve Krallman was the team's sixth man, coming in to spell one of the front line players. Steve averaged 5.5 ppg and 3.4 rpg while shooting 80.4% from the free throw line. Fellow senior Eric Musselman, a four-year guard , played in 28 contests, as did junior Marty Munn. As a team, USO led the nation in field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to 40.1% shooting. In–

dividually, Madden joined Thompson on the AII-WCAC team , while Leonard and Manor earned honorable mention . Thompson, a three-time AII-WCAC selection , finished his career third among the all-time leading scorers at USO with 1,379 career points. Three-year starter Nils Madden finished with a career shooting percentage of 57.0% (282X494) . The players were not the only ones receiving individual honors as Egan was named Coach of the Year in the WCAC for the second consecutive year. In his three seasons at USD, Egan has compiled a 59-26 record . Additional highlights for the Toreros: Were 14-0 at home last season , running their win-streak to 17-straight at the USO Sports Center; Steve Krallman was named the WCAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Year (award covered all WCAC sports); Scott Thompson twice was named PSA-WCAC " ·a, Player of the Week, and was named WCAC Player of the Month for !ii ::; February; Paul Leonard and Mark Manor each received the WCAC Player ~ of the Week award once; Nils Madden and Scott Thompson were named en ~ to the Albertson's Classic All-Tournament team; Scott Thompson was ii named to the WCAC Post-Season All-=fournament team .

1987-88 OUTLOOK

1987-1988 UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO BASKETBALL OUTLOOK

With all the success of his 1986-87 basketball team, what does the future hold for Head Coach Hank Egan and his 1987-88 squad? 'Tm looking forward to this season. There are going to be a lot of new challenges and a lot of new, different things to teach . We're not going to use this year to build for the next one. We're going to be getting after it at all times," stated head coach Hank Egan. ·

From Coach Egan's 1986-87 team that finished with a 24-6 record and a 13-1 WCAC mark, USO lost six seniors that contributed approximately two-thirds of the team's scoring. Gone are four of USD's starters: center Scott Thompson (15.9 ppg), forward Nils Madden (11 .1 ppg), guard Paul Leonard (10.5 ppg) and forward Mark Manor (10.2 ppg). Also lost to gradua- l"""!!t"."-•~ Jll--1 c: tion are seniors Steve Krallman (5.5 ppg) and Eric Musselman (1.2 ppg). ~ The lone returning starter for this season is junior guard Danny Means i (8.0 ppg), who paced USO with 18 points in their heartbreaking 62-61 2 loss to Auburn in the first round of the NCAA's. Five other returning players &_ who will be called upon by Coach Egan for increased playing time, either

as starters or reserves, include senior forward Marty Munn (3.4 ppg), senior center Jim Pelton (2.8ppg), junior guard Mike Haupt (0.9 ppg),

#20, JR. MIKE HAUPT

sophomore guard Craig Cottrell (3.2 ppg) and sophomore forward Brian Anderson (1 .5 ppg). Three redshirts from last season that will be starting their freshman eligibility include Dondi Bell , a 6-9 center; Bob Coady, a 6-4 guard ; and Omar Parker, a 6-0 guard from Mercer Island, Washington. Head Coach Hank Egan, who was named the West Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year this past season, will have five new recruits that he hopes will be able to make immediate contributions. Heading the list is JC transfer Efrem Leonard, a 6-1 guard from Mt. San Antonio Junior College in Pomona, California. Efrem, the younger brother of last season's point guard Paul Leonard, averaged 13.1 ppg at Mt. San Antonio. Four in– coming freshmen with strong credentials include: John Sayers, a 6-7 forward who averaged 19.2 ppg at Bellarmine Prep in San Jose, California; Keith Colvin, a 6-8 forward from Chico High School, in Chico, California who averaged 17.0 ppg; Randy Thompson, a 6-6 swingman from Don Lugo High School in Chino, California who averaged

16.9 ppg ; and Kelvin Means, a 6-9 guard from St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, California who averaged 21 .0 ppg. He is the younger brother of junior guard Danny Means. Although the '87-88 team has eight new players on the roster, you can guarantee Coach Egan's squad will stay competitive with its defensive play. Good defense is a trademark with Egan– coached teams. His 1986-87 team finished first in the nation in field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to 40.1% shooting. The Toreros will open their '87-88 season with an exhibition with San Diego based Athletes-in-Action on November 6th. They'll open their nonconference schedule at Rice University on November 27th and their WCAC schedule on January 15th at Loyola Marymount University.

SAN DIEGO

"AMERICA'S FINEST CITY''

San Diego is truly "America's Finest City." A modern metropolis (second largest in California) and a popular year– round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, canyons and valleys. San Diego also surrounds one of California's greatest natural harbors which has been a dominant factor in determining the city's history, economy and development. As home of the largest naval air station on the west coast, the Federal government ranks first in economic impor– tance to the city with the aerospace equipment industry second . Tourism closely follows as third . Business and pleasure coexist in harmony in San Diego. The climate, attractive setting and recreational facilities make San Diego "America's Finest City." According to Sports Illustrated, "For sheer numbers of participants, diversity of pursuits of involvement, San Diego must rank as the sports and fitness capital of the U.S." Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sail, swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, wind-surf on 70 miles of public beach or golf at any of the over 50 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1,158-acre recreation and cultural center, offers 25 tennis courts, two gym– nasiums, two municipal golf courses and one of the nation's finest zoos. Mission Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing, bicycling, tennis, golf and kite flying. As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports their professional teams - the Chargers in football, the Padres in baseball and the Seekers in soccer. Whatever sporting activity there is, it's here in San Diego - the sports capital of the U.S.A.

UNIVERSITY PROFILE

UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego is an independent, Catholic university located on a 170-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USO is presently experiencing record attendance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 3400, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 5400. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration , Education, Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USO from 24 foreign countries. In January of 1987, USO opened the doors to its new University Center, a 74,500 square foot building for students, faculty and staff. The two– level Center is the largest building on campus. It is the seventh major project completed at USO during the past eight years. It's a place for people to meet for leisure and fun, a place for extracurricular activities. Recreation, intramural and athletic activities are expanding rapidly. Among the many recreation and intramural programs offered , some of the favorites include: Mission Bay Aquatic Center activities (water skiing, surfing , sailing, crew), modern dance, aerobics, bowling, karate, backpacking, softball , tennis, floor hockey and volleyball.
