A Message From President Hughes The men 's basketball program is integral to the University's athletic endeavors, just as the athletic program is integral to our view of education - which is that education should develop the whole person. This program moved from NCAA Division II to Division I just three years ago, and each year has seen increasing strength and com– petitive capabilities in the USO team. The University is proud of the team's accom– plishments, and pleased to support the pro– gram in every way possible, including schol– arship aid to our athletes, recognition of the values of the program, and promotion of inter– collegiate athletics. I believe our USO team will be receiving some national attention this year, and I look forward to watching the season's events unfold.

Vice Presidents Dr. William Pickett (University Relations), Jack Boyce (Financial Affairs), Sr. Sally Furay (Provost), and Thomas Burke (Student Affairs) work on Plans for the Future expansion of the USO Community.

Coach Jim Brovelli

HEAD COACH JIM BROVELLI

Jim Brovelli is entering his ninth season at the helm of the University of San Diego basketball program: a program that he has brought from a NCAA Division II power to its present rank as one of the fastest growing Division I programs on the West Coast. Coach Brovelli has incorporated a sound consistant philosophy , as well as, realistic and progressive goals for himself and all those involved in the program. This philosophy has already shown signs of bearing fruit with USO improving their over-all and West Coast Athletic Conference record in each of the past three years. San Diego has become a club that opponents fear because of their well-drilled , well-coached , and extremely competitive style , a Brovelli trademark.

Growth can be seen in other areas of the program besides the improvement of the team's record . Coach Brovelli and the USO program have become synonymous with success . This is evi– dent in the type of athlete the USO staff has recruited into the program , including six WCAC All-Academic team members last year. Brovelli is also becoming a popular member on the coaching clinic tour. Jim was a speaker on the Medalist Coaching Staff and this past summer went to England to speak at the English Schools Basketball Association Player Improvement Clinic . Coach Brovelli is the winningest coach in USO history, and with him at the reins , USO can look to the future with confidence and excitement in the Toreros ' quest for national or conference prominence . Brovellil is a 1964 graduate of the University of San Francisco where he has been inducted into the Don 's Hall of Fame . Jim was instrumental in the resurgence of USF as a national power, helping lead them to WCAC crowns in 1963 and 1964. Following graduation he was named to a United States All-Star team which toured the country playing exhibition games with the Russian National Team. In 1966 he was selected as West Coast AAU " Athlete of the Year, " while playing for the San Francisco Athletic Club. This honor subse– quently earned him a position on the AAU All-Star team which toured South America. Jim began his coaching career in 1967 and has a combined high school and college record of 230-152. Jim and his wife Nada, have two children , Mike 10 and Michele, 8.

COACH BROVELLl'S CAREER RECORD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO 130-106

BROVELLl'S SEASON OUTLOOK:

Our team this year will be very difficult to assess until we begin the season and play some games. We have six new recruits in our program and how soon it will take them to develop and coordinate into a cohesive unit is unpredictable. I do feel, however, that we should have more depth, more quickness, and better perimeter shooting than we have had in the past. Once again , our pre-season schedule and the West Coast Athletic Conference will be as tough as it has ever been. Our goals for our program have been consistently realistic through the years and if we can re– main competitive in each game, there is no doubt that we will be able to continue our growth and improvement again this season. We are all looking forward to a most exciting and rewarding year.

Assistant Coaches

JOHN COSENTINO, ASSOCIATE BASKETBALL COACH

This will be John Cosentino 's fifth year on Jim Brovelli 's staff as the full time assistant coach . Along with his coaching duties, John is also the Director of Recruiting for the Torero Basketball program . Since his appointment in 1979, Cosentino has been in– strumental in the growth of the basketball program when at the same time , they moved up to the NCAA Division I level and the West Coast Athletic Conference . Prior to Cosentino 's appointment to the Torero staff he was a successful varsity basketball, football and baseball coach at University High School in San Diego. John was also the freshman coach at United States International University. Cosentino , a nat ive of San Diego, earned all-county honors in football and basket– ball . In his senior year he captained University to a California lntersholastic Federa– tion basketball championship and was named Player of the Year.

After lettering in football and basketball at Mesa College in San Diego , Cosentino went on to a scholar– ship at Adams State , Colorado, and San Diego State University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science and a minor in English from San Diego State in 1970. He has recently completed a Masters Degree in Education from Azusa-Pacific College . John has acted on the California Interscholastic Federation Basketball Advisory Board and has had ex– tensive summer camp coaching and counseling for John Wooden and Sportsworld , and is the coordinator of the successful USO Jim Brovelli Basketball Camp . He res ides in the Pacific Beach area of San Diego.

COACH DAVID BABCOCK

David Babcock is entering his first year as an assistant coach at the University of San Diego under head basketball coach Jim Brovelli. Dave will replace assistant Dick Satterlee (who has accepted the head coaching position at Eastern Oregon State). Coach Babcock brings with him a great deal of coaching experience in his young career, assisting at his alma-mater Grand Canyon College (1981-82) and also at Moon Valley High School where he helped direct the team to an Arizona AAA crown and a Skyline Conference Championship (1980-81). Besides coaching , Babcock played basketball at Scottsdale Junior College and Grand Canyon College . Dave and his wife Dori reside in San Diego. His older brother Pete is an assistant coach with the San Diego Clippers of the NBA. Gus Magee began his USO coaching career as a graduate assistant to Bernie Bickerstaff, while pursuing his Masters Degree in Social Science. He then joined present Head Coach Jim Brovelli in 1973. Magee also completed his undergraduate degree at USO and was a top basketball player here after completing his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Gus played under legendary Coach Phil Woolpert and holds most of the Toreros rebounding records including 948 career rebounds , most rebounds in a single game (24), most rebounds in a season (344), and the single season rebound average (14.4 rpg). Coach Magee takes great pride in being involved with USD basketball since 1966 and watching it grow from a small college program to its current status as a member of the NCAA Division I ranks and the West Coast Athletic Conference. Currently working with the San Diego Youth Employment Program on a full time basis as a vocational counselor, Gus is also married to Faye and has a son , Mark. GUS MAGEE, ASSISTANT BASKETBALL COACH

UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO 1982-83 BASKETBALL PROSPECTUS

Head Basketball Coach Jim Brovelli feels that the Toreros are right on target with his five year plan for success. The University of San Diego hoopsters have seen steady improvement in each of the three years that the Toreros have been at the NCAA Division I level and the West Coast Athletic Conference. In 1979-80 USO finished last in the WCAC with a 6-19 record and have improved to 11-15 and a sixth place finish in 1981-82. This year will be the true test for the Toreros , who lose four starters and seven seniors. Gone are guard Rusty Whitmarsh, forwards Jim Bateman and Gerald Jones, center Dave Heppell, and reserves Steve Rocha (center), Paul Appleby (forward), and Mike Ramsey (guard). The strength in the returnees has to be at the point guard where 6'0" senior Rich Davis (6.3 ppg-2.2 apg) and 6'0" junior John Prunty (4.0 ppg-1 .8 apg) return after sharing duties last year. They will be hard pressed by a 6'2" sophomore Jon Freeman, who saw limited action last season . Guard/forward Don Capener (6 '6", Jr., 6.4 ppg) returns along with redshirt Randy Brickley (6'6", Jr.) hoping to fill the void at the big guard position . USO returns two forwards, 6'7" senior Robby Roberts (4.7 ppg-5.4 rpg), and sophomore Anthony Reuss (6'7"). Jim Brovelli is quite pleased with this year 's recruits, and feels that this may be the best recruiting year since the Toreros entered the NCAA Division I ranks three years ago. USO brought in two top notch freshmen and four junior college transfers. The freshmen, 6'8½ " center/forward Mario Coronado (21.2 ppg, 8.8 rpg , 68% FG¾) and 6'9" forward Mike Davis (22 .9 ppg, 14.5 rpg, 4 Blk/game) have strong credentials and may see a great deal of playing time . All four J.C. transfers are expected to give strong competition for star– ting spots at their respective positions. Bill Penfold, a 6'5" big guard form Glendale College, averaged 12.2 ppg and 7.2 rpg for the Vaqueros. Besides Coronado and Davis USO recruited three forwards including 6'8" Dave Mciver (Cypress College, 3.8 ppg , 2.3 rpg), 6'7" Brian Setencich (Fresno City College, 13.4 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and 6'5" Mike Whitmarsh (Grossmont College, 18.5 ppg, 7.4 rpg , 62% FG¾). Not only do the Toreros have to fill four voids in the starting line-up, but they have to compete with the toughest schedule in USO basketball history. The schedule opens up with an exhibition game against the University of Alberta on November 22, then the Toreros play a Thanksgiving weekend series with the U.S. Air Force Academy on November 27th and Northern Arizona University on the 29th. December opens with a road trip to NIT participant UC Irvine on the 2nd. USO is home for two contests with St. Thomas College and Doane College on December 5th and 6th . On December 9th USO will take on cross-town rival San Diego State (NIT) in the San Diego Sports Arena. The Toreros take a week off for finals and then travel to Cal State Long Beach for a game on the 18th of December. USO comes home for a December 21st contest against Texas Tech , then travels to San Jose State on December 22 to play the Spartans, and then close out December at the Big Blue Classic (Utah State (host], T.C.U., Idaho State and USO) on the 28th and 29th .

The non-conference schedule ends with Oklahoma Christian (USO, Jan . 4), University of Nevada, Reno (Reno, Jan. 8), and the University of Denver (USO, Jan . 13).

West Coast Athletic Conference action will be more fierce than ever with Pepperdine the clear favorite and everyone else right behind. Pepperdine re~urns four starters from last year's WCAC Champion and NCAA Regional participant team and look like the best bet for this year's crown. Gonzaga, Loyola/Mary– mount, Portland , St. Mary's, USO and Santa Clara have all greatly improved their teams with increased ex– perience and fine recruiting.
