PEOPLE TO KNOW AT USD
Rev. Patrick Cahill, C.S.V., Athletic Director Father Patrick Cahill , a member of the Viatorian Fathers and Brothers, came to the University of San Diego in 1979 with the responsiblity of administering the ex– panding men and women 's ath letic programs. Since Father has taken over, USO has added men's cross country and soccer as well as women 's softball and cross country to its intercollegiate program. Men's baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, cross country, and tennis moved in 1979 into the NCAA Division I ranks and the West Coast Athletic Conference, while women 's basketball , volleyball, and tennis now participate at the AIAW Division I level , and softball , swimming and cross country are members of the AIAW Division II. Men's football remains a NCAA Division Ill participant and USO also boasts an inter– collegiate crew porgram for both men and women . Father Pat has brought to the University his integrity, leadership and devotion to his job; he has given to the staff and student athletes at USO an added meaning to the word "friend ." Father Cahill has a B.A. from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, and a M.S. in Education with a Physical Education major from Eastern Illinois University . Prior to USO, he served St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois, for sixteen years, fourteen as Athletic Director and two as its President/Principal.
Kent Scherzinger: Sports Information Director Kent is in the midst of this third year at the University of San Diego as the Sports Information Director, handling the publicity for the ever expanding USO Athletic Department. In 1979 Kent received his Master's Degree in Health & Physical Education/ Athletic Administration from Bowling Green State University. Working in various capacities as a grad assistant at Bowling Green, he gained athletic department experience in promotion and sales, sports information , and game day operations, while at the same time teaching recreation courses for the Physical Education Department. He also picked up valuable experience in athletics as an undergrad at Biscayne College, Miami , where he graduated in 1978 with a B.A. in Athletic Administration. Attending classes at Biscayne, he also worked at Florida International University as an Assistant S.I.D.
Carolyn Ryback: Head Athletic Trainer Carolyn Ryback, A.T.C ., in her fourth year at USO, has the distinction of being the only female Head Trainer at the NCAA Division I level. Recognized as a superb trainer, Carolyn often is asked to speak to professional groups, has published several articles in professional journals and is an instructor in Sports Medicine at both San Diego State and USO. Carolyn is also a media celebrity. The subject of many newspaper articlec., she has also appeared on T.V.'s P.M. Magazine and Independent Television 's children 's show Way To Go. Having received a B.A. in Physical Education from San Diego in 1975, Ms. Ryback comp leted work on her Master's degree in Sports Medicine at the same institution in 1978.
