In the West ... It's the WCAC
WCAC HISTORY A rich tradition has been established by the West Coast Athletic Conference since its incep– tion in 1952. Throughout the years the WCAC has been recognized nationally as one of the top basketball conferences, sending several teams to post season tournaments each year, and having the national champion two years in USF (1955 , 56) . The Conference also has contributed many top players into the PRO ranks such as Bill Russell (USF) , Ken Sears (SCU), K.C. Jones (USF) , Tom Meschery (SMC) , Ollie Johnson (USF) , Joe Ellis (USF) , Dennis Awtrey (SCU), John Gianelli (UOP), Phil Smith (USF) , Kevin Restani (USF) , Dennis Johnson (PU) , Ricky sobers (UNLIV) , Marlon Red– mond (USF) , and Bill Cartwright (USF) . Although the Conference is most noted for its basketball programs the WCAC also crowns champions in cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis . In baseball the WCAC merged with the PCAA in 1977, creating the Southern California and Northern California Baseball Associations. Today the West Coast Athletic Conference has expanded from its original five members (San Francisco , Santa Clara , St. Mary's, San Jose State, and Pacific) to the present eight including San Francisco, Santa Clara , St . Mary's, Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Portland , and the Univer– sity of San Diego .
