T
he University of San Diego celebrated the lives and accomplishments of nine
amazing alumni during the 2013 Alumni Honors celebration, which took place in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice on April 27. The recipient of the Bishop Charles Francis Buddy Award was Enrique Morones Careaga ’02 (MSEL), president and founder of Border Angels, an internationally recognized nonprofit organiza- tion made up of volunteers who strive to prevent the deaths of individuals traveling along the U.S.-Mexico border. Terry Liberatore Gase ’73 (BA), a teacher at St. Michael’s School in Poway, Calif., received the Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill Award for serv- ing on the Alumni Board of Direc- tors for two decades — as presi- dent and as a member of various committees — including the Leadership Committee, the Homecoming Committee and the Wine Classic Committee. Former USD Women’s Rowing team member Alison Cox ’01 (BA) was inducted into the Chet and Marguerite Pagni Family Athletic Hall of Fame. She started her row- ing career as a walk-on at the uni- versity and developed into one of the most successful Torero ath- letes ever. In 2000, Cox was a member of the United States’ Under-23 rowing team and, upon graduating in 2001, joined the U.S. senior rowing squad, where she helped the women’s eight

vide specialty services in audit, tax and consulting. Jeffrey A. Carlstead ’04 (EdD), owner and manager of Carlstead Inc. Hotel Development & Man- agement, was honored by the School of Leadership and Educa- tion Sciences. He has been active in the hospitality industry for 45 years and locally managed the award-winning Hampton Inn – San Diego/Kearny Mesa, which opened in 1989. He also served as a found- ing member of the SOLES Dean’s Advisory Board and has taught as an adjunct professor in the Depart- ment of Leadership Studies.

The university also recognized one alumnus or alumna fromeach school to receive the Author E. Hughes Career Achievement Award. Jan I. Goldsmith ’76 (JD), city attorney for the City of San Diego, was the School of Law recipient. He was appointed as a San Diego Superior Court judge in 1998. He also served three terms in the Cal- ifornia State Assembly, represent- ing the Northern San Diego City
District, which stretches from Mira Mesa to the Escondido border. In addition to the Hughes Career Achievement Award, Goldsmith previously received special recog- nition from the Children’s Lobby, affiliated with the USD School of Law, for his legislative work on behalf of foster children. Jacqueline F. Akerblom ’84 (BBA) represented the School of Business Administration. She’s the managing partner of the Southern California practice Grant Thornton, where she leads and manages a staff of more than 300 professionals who pro-
