Sarah advocated for recently passed anti-puppy mill legislation that will positively affect hundreds of thousands of dogs held in Pennsylva- nia’s commercial breeding kennels. Benjamin is a law clerk for the Clark County District Attorney’s Office. “I passed the Nevada Bar and I love it out here,” he says. LT. DEREK GOTTLIEB (B.A.) was commissioned from the Air Force NROTC at San Diego State Universi- ty on May 23, 2008, becoming a second lieutenant on active duty. Derek and his wife, Ann (Jeffries) Gottlieb ’08, celebrated their wed- ding day on May 24, 2008. The day after that, Derek and Ann graduat- ed from the University of San Diego. The couple went on their honey- moon in Kauai and Maui, Hawaii. “It was a wild three days, to say the least,” Derek says. The couple is now in Columbus, Miss., where Derek is attending Air Force flight training and Ann is attending Mississippi State University to earn a master’s degree in counseling. “We can’t wait to see USD again and see the changes,” Derek says.

The couple lives in Hun- tington Beach, Calif., while Jeffrey finishes his last year of surgical resi- dency at the UC Irvine Medical Cen- ter. Sanna took a position as trauma injury prevention coordinator at the UC Irvine Medical Center. AARON SHELLEY (MBA) complet- ed his Marine Corps career on Sept. 30, 2008, and finished a tour with the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit, San Diego. He works for Calloway Golf Company in Carlsbad as a principal financial analyst. LEONIDA SILAO (B.A.) says, “I’ve been enjoying time to myself and am currently searching for a temporary job to begin paying off loans and to save up for grad school — if I decide to go through with it.” Leonida also is contemplating teaching English in Japan or South Korea for a year. RYAN SWEETNAM (BBA) has been working on establishing and expanding Extreme Clean, a compa- ny that offers a wide range of exteri- or maintenance services. JENNIFER (TOPLEY) JOSSELYN (M.Ed.) married Jeff Josselyn of Riverside, Calif., on June 6, 2008. Jeff is a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Navy. Jennifer works in the San Diego Unified School District as a resource specialist at Jones Elementa- ry and Zamorano Elementary schools. PAUL KHAIT (MSEL) and his wife, Julia, welcomed the newest addition to their family, Mia Danielle Khait, on July 28, 2008. Paul and his family have since moved from San Diego to Santa Clara, Calif. SISTER HELEN HAMMACK, RSCJ, served as associate professor and chair of the biology department at USD from 1969 to 1971. She passed away in Atherton, Calif., on March 16, 2009. JOHN O’TOOLE (BBA ’86 ) passed away on Aug. 2, 2008. He was an at- torney and had lived in Orange County since 1988. “He enjoyed trav- eling, listening to music — particu- larly the symphony where he was a season-ticket holder — baseball and playing with his German shepherd, Joey,” writes his wife Nancy. JUDITH RAUNER ’95 (Ed.D.) , a visionary community service leader and author who founded USD’s Com- munity Service-Learning Program, died peacefully from a malignant brain tumor on March 23, 2009.
