Pay it Forward Officially launched in January 2007, the USD Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund already has an endowment of nearly $100,000. All of its disburse- ments go toward undergradu- ate scholarships. Lead donor Shannon Smith ’86 hopes that the rest of the alumni community join her in building a huge endowment for undergraduate scholarships. Save the Date Come one, come all, come back to campus for this year’s Homecoming & Reunion week- end, scheduled for Nov 2-4. Homecoming chair Kristin French ’94 (M.B.A. ’98) urges alumni to come on back to campus for some fun: “Homecoming is such a fantastic way to reconnect with USD friends and classmates. We are really working hard to make this year’s Homecoming the best ever. Please call your friends and invite them back to USD for a great weekend of fun!” Reunion festivities will be held for those whose class years are 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2002, but all are invited. Going Places This year’s Senior Class Legacy fund for incoming students is, once again, hoping to beat the previous class’ gift; while last year’s class raised $14,000, this year’s ambitious goal is $20,000. Dollars raised by the class of 2007 will directly benefit the class of 2011. When alumi board members met the students this spring, they were struck by the students’ commitment: “It was inspiring to see students so pas- sionate about raising money for their Senior Gift.” The Alumni Association, Associated Students and other student organizations play a big role in getting this fund rolling each year. They can also think about becoming a reunion chair or getting involved with their local alumni chapter.” Kaplan, who earned a B.S. in business administration from Pennsylvania State University and an M.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in comparative religion, is excited about all the great opportunities at the University of San Diego. “I’d like to encourage alumni to participate in our new scholar- ship funds, the USD Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Alcalá Alumni Fund,” he says. “But most of all, I just want our alumni to reconnect with the university in the way that’s most meaningful for them.” To contact Martin Kaplan, e-mail mkaplan@sandiego.edu or call (619) 260-4819.

director of alumni relations wants to throw open the doors of the school to its entire alumni base. “I’d like the campus and the Degheri Alumni Center to be a home away from home,” he says. “Of course we’d like you to come back for Homecoming, but we’d really like to see you throughout the year.” Kaplan, who most recently served as manager of chapter and constituent relations at the University of California, San Diego, says there are plenty of ways for alumni to get involved with the campus: “I want to encourage alumni to act as role models to current USD students through speaking, mentoring and a host of student/alumni programs.” And if those options don’t appeal, the enthusiastic Kaplan has plenty of other ways for alumni to reconnect. “Alumni can volunteer to read scholarship
