author and activist with a passion for immigrant rights, police accountability and LGBTQ youth. His teaching embodied empathy and rigor in equal measure — seeking to challenge assumptions while honoring each student’s lived experience. Through his sociology courses, he inspired students to think critically, act compassionately and see the profound connections between the personal and the political. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the USD College of Arts and Sciences in support of the Dr. Greg Prieto Memorial Scholarship Fund. Herbert B. “Herbie” Tasker (1936-2026) passed away surrounded by family on January 30 in Butte, Montana, at the age of 89. A man of deep faith and commitment to community, he gave generously of his time and talents beyond his profession to advance education and spiritual formation. Honored as trustee emeritus in 2005, Herb served on the University of San Diego’s Board of Trustees for 19 years (1994-2013). He contributed to the development, executive, executive compensation and investment committees, including nine years as finance chair. Herb also served as a member of the Burnham Moores Center for Real Estate Policy Advisory Board Executive Committee and the Franciscan School of Theology Board of Regents.

Nicholas “Nick” James Nobles ’13 (BA) (1991-2025) , 34, passed away peacefully at home on November 11, surrounded by love and family. Nobles graduated magna cum laude from the University of San Diego in 2013 with degrees in mathematics and computer science. He was a proud and active member of the USD TRiO programs and widely known as the Student Support Services Tutor of the Year (a scholarship award that will now be named in his honor), helping countless underrepresented students succeed in mathematics. Nobles was a natural mentor and exceptional young scholar leader whose presence uplifted everyone around him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of San Diego TRiO Programs (Student Support Services, McNair Scholars, and Upward Bound).
