Marjorie “Marge” Ann Hughes (1931-2025) passed away peacefully on October 23 at the age of 94. She was the devoted spouse of Author “Art” E. Hughes Jr., PhD, president emeritus of the University of San Diego. During their many years of service to the university community, she worked alongside her husband to welcome students, faculty, alumni and visitors with grace and hospitality. Her kindness, compassion and strength of character left an indelible mark on campus life and the broader San Diego community. To honor both the husband and wife for their 24 years of devoted service, the building that formerly served as headquarters of the San Diego Diocese was renamed
through his works. In addition to her English studies, she earned a degree in business administration, played on the women’s tennis team and was a staff writer for The USD Vista student newspaper. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lompoc Hospital District Foundation in Erin’s memory.
Frank D. Alessio (1935-2025) , a devoted leader, philanthropist and pillar of the San Diego community, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on September 22. Distinguished with the title of trustee emeritus after having dedicated 31 years (1986-2017) to the University of San Diego’s Board of Trustees, Alessio contributed to the athletics, campaign, executive, facilities, finance, investment and trustees committees, including eight years as vice chair. He was also a valued member of the Children’s Advocacy Institute, which was founded at the USD School of Law in 1989. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to the Frank and Linda Alessio Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of San Diego.
Colonel James “Jim” C. Flynn, USMC (Ret.) ’69 (BA) (1947-2025) passed away unexpectedly on September 14 at age 78. A devoted husband, father and proud United States Marine, he lived a life of service, honor and commitment. A political science major at the University of San Diego, Flynn was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and served a tour in the Republic of Vietnam following his graduation. His distinguished time in the Marine Corps offered many unique assignments and opportunities all around the world.
Oscar William “Bill” Mingo Jr. (1970-2025) passed away at the age of 55. A longtime University of San Diego employee, he first began his 35-year-long career with Dining Services as a line chef in 1990. Amelie Sedlack, feature editor for The USD Vista , penned a tribute honoring his memory on October 22. Sentiments shared by many in the Torero community remember him as a cheerful, kind and positive person who brightened many days as he welcomed decades of students, employees and visitors who dined at the Student Life Pavilion. Those who received a greeting from Mingo over the years may remember him best for his smile and signature catchphrase, “We’re making it!”
Erin K. Coughlin ’87 (BA) (1965-2026) , a passionate lover of literature known for her hard work and dedication, died in January at her home in Jersey City, New Jersey, at the age of 60. As an undergraduate at the University of San Diego, Coughlin volunteered her time tutoring students in English literature. She held a special affection for Marcel Proust and delighted in guiding students
