Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres ove rl ooking Mission Bay. San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocea n. The campus is named Alca la Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famo us San Diego Zoo. Hi sto ric Old Town is just minutes away as we ll. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Span ish vill age near Madrid - Alca la de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Comp lut um . the vi ll age was later renamed A l Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university. the University of Alcala. whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. Both institutions are located on a hill

overlooking a river valley. THE CAMPUS

The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country. featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance sty le. The physical beauty of the campus reaches beyond the "eye of the beholder." Reverend Mother Rosalie Hill. one of the insti– tutions founders, believed in the enhancement of learning th rough beauty and harmony. Hence for the University. beauty is a transcendental quality imparted to students as part of their education to truth and goodness: a simple but profound educational philosophy. Since 1984. USO has completed eleven major construction and expansion projects. A five-story parking garage was completed in 1998. The 5.000 seat Jenny Craig Pavilion. USD's new Sports/Activity Center. is due to open in the Fall of 2000: and this past October was the ground breaking ceremony for the Joan B. Kroc Peace Institute. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995. connecting the entrances of the Immaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992. the university completed the 45.000 square foot Loma Hall, which inc ludes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center. classrooms and labratories. ACADEMICS USO enrolls more than 6.900 students (4.795 undergraduate) who have a choice

of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The uni vers ity's academic units include the Co llege of Arts and Sciences. and the Schools of Business Admin istra– ti on, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size general ly averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doc torates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and universities. publi shed by U.S. News & World Repor/. USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The unive rsity is ranked among the top I00 schools in the nation. Students participate in a wide range of vo lunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, sen io r c iti ze n ou treach, and house building in Tijuana. JENNY CRAIG PAVILION • With a donation of $7 million by Sid and Jenny Craig, USD received the lead gift neces– sary to build its much needed $17 million Sports/ Activities Center. The pavilion, which is located at the eastern end of campus between Torero Stadium and Cunningham Baseball Stadium, includes a 5,100-seat gymnasium, coaches of– fices, a 3,800-square-foot fitness center, athletic training facilities, showers and locker rooms, concession stand, and reception room. The Monsignor 1.8. Eagen Plaza off the Pavilion entry, will take advantage of the view across campus to the ocean. The Chet & Marguerite Pagni Family Athletic Hall of Fame is also housed in the facility. The pavilion, which opened this past fall, also serves a range of edu– cational, cultural and athletic events.

The Un ivers ity of SanDiego is a membe r o f the West Coas t Conference fo r nearly all sports and competes in six tee n inte rco ll eg iate spo rts on the NCAA Divi sion I leve l. The foo tbal l team compl e ted its seventh season in the Pi onee r Football League. Since 1990 USO teams have won 11 confe rence champi onshi ps ; made 26 post – season appearances ; had 25 Confe rence Coaches of the Year; 20 Confe rence Playe rs 01· the Year, 11 Conference Freshman of the Year, 4 WCC Scholar Athl e tes of the Year and 29 NCAA A ll-Americans. Zuzana Lese narova , a 4-t ime NCAA All-Ame ri ca tenni s playe r fo r USO, won the 1999 national sing les titl e. Patri ck Hawki ns, a four-year member o f the USO go lf squ ad between 1997-2000, won meda li st honors at the 1998 WCC Champi ons hips. With its new 5, I00-seat Jenn y Craig Pav ili on compl eted, the Uni versity of Sa n Diego w ill be the hos t site for the upcoming 200 I West Coast Conference Baske tball Champi onships. March 1-5. The men's champion ship game w ill air live on ESPN on March 5 th .
