Assistant Coaches

MIKE RISH - 23rd Year Mike Rish is beginning his 23rd season on the Torero staff. He returns as the Senior Offensive Assistant where he oversees the eceivers, something he has done for twenty-one of the past twenty-two Torero seasons. Mike played for USD from 1979-83 where he posted career numbers that make him one of the best receivers ever to play at USD he ranks third all-time with 101 receptions, 18 receiving touchdowns and 1,722 receiving yards. He held the school marks in all three reer receiving departments from 1983 through 1997. He was passed up by two Torero receivers he coached - Dylan Ching in 1999, and ost recently by Adam Hannula last season. In 1983 he was selected the team's scholar-athlete by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. In the Toreros' nationally-televised game between Occidental in 1982, Rish was named the CBS Chevrolet Player of the Game. Mike graduated from USD MICHAEL CHRISTIANSON - 1st Year Michael Christianson is beginning his 1st season on the Torero staff. Christianson, who brings a wealth of coaching experience at oth the collegiate and NFL levels, will coach the Torero tight ends in 2006. The past two seasons he was on the Nebraska staff as Senior dministrative assistant for Football where he oversaw the daily operation of the football program's technology areas, including all operations nvolving video, computer and electronics. He also assisted on the offensive side of the ball. Prior to Nebraska he was with the Oakland Raiders staff for a brief time when Torero coach Jim Harbaugh was there. Additionally, hristianson was the assistant offensive line coach on Coach Jon Gruden's staff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was a member of the ucs' coaching staff that guided the organization to a Super Bowl title in 2002. Before coaching with Tampa Bay, Christianson developed a iverse background in football , both as a coach and leader in technology within the game. In 2001 he was the Director of Product Market– ing/NFL Account Manager for XOS Technologies, designing digitized video applications for coaching and teaching. DAVID SHAW - 1st Year David Shaw is beginning his 1st season on the Torero staff. He will be the Passing Game Coordinator and also coach the wide eceivers. Shaw is another Torero assistant that brings awealth of coaching experience from the NFL ranks. He got his NFL start with the hiladelphia Eagles in 1997 as an offensive assistant where he worked closely with then-offensive coordinator Jon Gruden. He was hired y the Oakland Raiders in 1998 for Quality Control-Offense, and by 2001 had been promoted to quarterback coach. He joined the Baltimore avens organization in 2002, and by 2004 was coaching both the wide receivers and quarterbacks. The 2005 campaign was his fourth and nal season with the Ravens where he coached wide receivers. His first coaching stint was with Western Washington (1995-96). Shaw graduated from Stanford where he earned a sociology degree. He was afour-year letter winner (1991-94) in football where e played flanker, and is only the third man in Stanford history to participate in three varsity sports - football, basketball and track. He is the son of retired Willie Shaw, a 33-year coaching veteran with 15 in the NFL. David and his wife, Kori, have two children - a daughter Keegan Mireya, and a son, Carter Lorenzo. COLEMAN HUTZLER - 1st Year Coleman Hutzler is beginning his 1stseason on the Torero staff. He will be adefensive assistant and work closely with Torero Defensive oordinator Dave Adolph. Hutzler, from Las Vegas, Nevada, attended Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. He played football for the anthers the past four seasons at linebacker and leaves the program second in career tackles with 246. The team captain also chipped in ith 26 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback sacks, three interceptions and three forced fumbles. This past season he was named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference first-team after leading the league in tackles ith 93. He totaled 10 or more tackles six times this past season, including a 17-tackle effort against Colby. He was named NESCAC 2nd earn in his junior year after leading the team with 72 stops. He attended The Meadows School in Las Vegas, Nevada where the football earn was a perennial state power. FOOTBALL OPERATIONS He garnered additional coaching experience with stops at Montana State (2000-01 ), Portland State (1995-99), Lewis & Clark (1995) and Western Oregon (1992- 94). Christianson played football for three years at Western Oregon where he graduated in 1992. He went on to earn a master's degree in secondary education with an emphasis in administration and computer applications from Western Oregon in 1995. Christianson and his wife, Tracy, have two sons, Taylor and Cameron. with an Accounting degree in 1984. He is the Vice President for Secondary Marketing for Guild Mortgage Company in San Diego.

Tanner Engstrand enters his second season with the Torero football team where he will again work with football operations. Last eason was his first with the team where he helped with all equipment duties and daily football operations. Engstrand was atwo-year letterman at San Diego State University (2003-2004) where he played quarterback. He saw limited action in is two seasons, serving mainly as abackup. Before enrolling at SDSU he was aFirst Team All-Foothill Conference and Academic All-America uarterback at Grossmont College in El Cajon, California during the 2002 season. He is currently enrolled at USD where he is working on his aster's degree in Business Administration.

Jim Rooney is beginning his 1st season with the Torero staff in the position of football operations assistant.
