The University of San Diego celebrates its 40th year of football this season, and head coach Kevin McGarry enters his 27th season of involvement with the program. Entering his 7th year at the helm, he also played two seasons (l 976-77), and was an assistant coach for eighteen seasons. With 54 returners and 9 starters back from last season, McGarry is optimistic the Toreros will continue their success off of last year's 6-3 campaign. The 200 I club also tied for second pl ace in the Pioneer Football League and ranked 14th among NCAA I-AA teams in rushing defense. Coach McGarry enters the 2002 season with a six-year record of 29-31. In 1997 McGarry directed the Toreros to an 8-3 overall mark and a school-best second place finish in the Pioneer Football League with its 4-1 mark. The 1997 campaign was USD ' s best showing si nce moving to the NCAA Division I-AA ranks and the PFL confere nce in 1993. The '97 club became onl y the fourth USD squad to achieve at least eight victories in 35 years of Torero football , and it was the program's most victories since the 1981 season. The team's 33.6 points per game average ranks second all -time in USD football.

The tenth coach to direct the Torero football program since its start in 1956, Kev in is the first USD graduate to head the position. McGarry is no stranger to USD football. Prior to being named the head coach in 1996, he was an assistant coach at the University of San Diego for eighteen seasons, including the last fourteen as the defensive coordinator and defensive bac ks coach. He became a full-time assistant for football in 1985 - hi s first seven years ( 1978-84) were split between football, women's softball (head coach) and as an elementary school teacher. In addition to his on-the-field duties, Kevi n was also responsible for recruiting and as li aison for the USD Football Alumni Club.

"Kev in ' s years of experience at USD have prepared him well for this position," stated Tom Iannacone, Director of Athletics. "He clearly understands the role of the football program within the mi ssion of the uni versity."

Over the past twenty-four seasons with Kevin on the coaching staff, USD has accumul ated an overall record of 130-105-3, including seventeen seasons with records of .500 or better. Of the nine USD foo tball players that have been named GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since 1981, eight have come from the defensive side of the ball, including seven defensive backs. In 1987 the Torero defense set a school record for shutouts in a season with four, and the team gave up just I00 points in ten contests and finished 6-3- 1. Prior to joining the USO coaching staff in 1978, Kevin was a two-year letterwinner on the USO footba ll squad ( 1976-77), earni ng co-Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1977. He pl ayed two years ( 1974-75) at Saddleback College in Mi ss ion Viejo, California, earning Most Valuable Player honors in 1975. He received both hi s Bachelor of Arts in Education ( 1979), and hi s Master' s Degree in Education Admin istration ( 1985) from the Un ivers ity of San Diego.
