Meet The Toreros ~------~-12 Tim Duerr returns for hi s fourth season with the Toreros where he will compete for the starting free safety slot ... last season as a defensive back he tallied 9 tackles in four contests ... he posted 4 tackles (2 solo) in win over Drake ... in 2000 he tallied 9 tackles (5 solo) along with l tackle for loss, 3 pass breakups, and 1 interception ... against Azusa Pacific he posted I tackle, 1 pass breakup and I interception ... season-high 3 tackles versus Whittier ... prior to USD Tim prepped at El Segundo High School where he was team MVP, All-CIF and All-Ocean League his senior year ... picked off four passes his senior year and 3 during junior campaign ... also lettered in baseball, earning Most Improved, Hustle and Scholar-Athlete awards ... also recruited by Army , Columbia, Hawaii and Redlands ... chose USD for location, size of school, weather and football program ... USD Dean's List honors ... hopes to coach high school football at alma mater; wants to be a fire fighter. Major: Communication; Minor: Business Administration. of the offensive line unit ... named to 2001 PFL Academic Honor Roll ... this past spring and summer has gotten stronger and faster ... the past two seasons he tallied significant playing time as a backup on the offensive line for the Toreros ... prior to USD he played collegiate football at El Camino College ... he was an accomplished JC player at center ... from Torrance, California, he prepped at Torrance High School where he lettered in both football and track & field ... in football he earned All-Bay League honors and was selected a Lions All-Star his senior year ... he also was All-League during his junior campaign ... he chose USD for its academics, location and size of school ... was also recruited by Saint Mary's College, Yale and Brown ... was born in Pakistan. Michael Tabata returns for his final season with the Toreros where he will again compete
for playing time with the defensive line unit ... the past three seasons he has seen playing time in a reserve capacity at the defensive end position ... last year he was credited with a pass break-up in win over Fairfield, and a tackle for loss (-2 yards) in win over Wagner College ... named to 2001 PFL Academic Honor Roll ... prior to USD he prepped at Jesuit High School where he was 1st Team All-State and 1st Team All-Metro League hi s senior campaign ... the football team finished as league champs and ranked 3rd in the state ... he also lettered in track & field and baseball ... he chose USD for a quality education, and the chance to play I-AA football ... also recruited by Yale, Willamette and Puget Sound ... hi s father, Calvin, played football at Lewis & Clark College ... has trained in Aikido for 20 years

Joseph Tagaloa returns for his senior year with the Toreros where he will compete for playing time at fullback, as well as with kickoff returns on the special teams unit ... last season he carried the ball six times for 17 yards with a long of 9 yards versus Wagner College ... named to 2001 PFL Academic Honor Roll ... he transferred to USD from Santa Ana College where his team won the Mission Conference title at 7-3, and he earned All-State and All-Mission Conference 1st Team honors as a kickoff returner ... he prepped at Saddleback High School where he was selected the Offensive Player of the Year in the Golden West League ... named a three-time All-Golden West League performer at running back ... also lettered in baseball, soccer and track; he was All-League and MVP in both baseball and soccer. Anthony Valanos returns for his second and final year with the Toreros where he will
compete for playing time at wide receiver ... named to 2001 PFL Academic Honor Roll ... prior to USD he competed for Orange Coast College - his squad went 8-2 and were Mission Conference Champions .. . they also advanced to the Strawberry Bowl ... he attended Woodbridge High School where he lettered in both football and track & field ... during his senior campaign he was named MVP for Special Teams, and earned 2nd Team All-County honors with the team going 9-2-1 ... in track & field he was 1st Team All-County, MVP, and league champion in the long jump and triple jump ... he chose USD for its great ath letic and scholastic opportunities ... was also recruited by Brown,
Cornell and Occidental ... earned Dean's List honors last year at USD. Major: Business Administration; Minor: Marketing & Real Estate.
Anthony Valanos #80 SR WR
Michael Zimmerman returns for his fourth and final season with the Toreros ... he will compete for playing time at linebacker ... last season he tallied five tackles (2 solo) in four contests ... in USD's season– opening win over Azusa Pacific he had two stops including a tackle for loss of -14 yards ... he came to USD in 1998 and sat out the 2000 season ... during the 1999 campaign he totaled 20 tackles (10 solo) in six contests with one quarterback sack (-9 yards) and one tackle for loss (-2 yards) ... prior to USD he attended San Marcos High School where he was the team MVP his senior year, and the Defensive Player of the Year his junior season (school record 169 tackles) ... he also lettered in basketball and baseball, and was selected team captain ... was his high school's chess champion .
