SETTING The University of San Diego is an independent Catho li c institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The c

ACADEMICS

USO enrolls more than 6,943 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's aca– demic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nurs ing. C lass size gener– ally averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of US D's full-time facu lty hold doctorates. In the annual rat ings of the country's colleges and universities, published by U.S. News & World Reporl, USO moved from the regional to nat ional category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top I00 sc hoo ls in the nation. STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cu ltu ral events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Stu– dents participate in a wide range of vo lunteer projects such as adu lt literacy

tutoring, senior citizen out– reach, and house building in Tijuana. The intramura l program is also an integral part of student life on cam– pus with over two-thirds of the USO community par– taking in intramural sports.

DID YOU KNOW ? Torero Stadium, home to USD football and soccer, also is home to the San Diego Spirit, the women's professional soccer team that recently completed its initial season in the WUSA. With that, Torero Stadium received numerous upgrades that make it one of the best facilities of its size on the west coast. New seating behind the east endzone , as well as on the south side of the field, expands the stadium seat– ing capacity to 6,000 seats. Torero Stadium also received a new grass turf, new lighting and sound system, and additional press box space.

ATHLETICS

The University of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. The footba ll team wi ll begin its eighth season in the Pioneer Football League . Women's sports inc lude: basketball, cross country, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Men's sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country, go lf, football , rowing, soccer and tennis. Since 1990 USO teams have won e leven conference championships; made 28 NCAA post– season appearances; had twenty-seven Conference Coaches of the Year; twenty-two Confer– ence Players of the Year; twelve Conference Freshmen of the Year; four WCC Schola r Ath– letes of the Year; and thirty-one A ll -America se lections. Two seasons ago, Dylan Ching, US D's all-time career receiving leader, played in the Hul a Bowl Senior All-Star game and was drafted in the 3rd round by th e CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders.
